Een wiskundig model wordt gemaakt om de multivariate meetgegevens (signaal + interferentie) te beschrijven. Toevoegen van meer parameters aan het model laat in eerste instantie toe om betere voorspellingen te maken (interferentie wordt beschreven). Nadien verhoogt de voorspellingsfout van onafhankelijke data weer, wanneer te veel ruis mee in het model wordt opgenomen.
