Again

Hi: Remember this one? I found This SPA, created years ago. The blocked one try to use that picture in this article, where it has a special interest (You can find here at least four attempts to upload pictures for that same person.) Not sure if there is a problem with this picture, too. The original was used on this website. Thanks in advance. Rastamby (talk) 14:01, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

✓ Done Actually this account is older, so I blocked them both indef. for abusing multiple accounts. File deleted. Yann (talk) 15:40, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
This account is linked. Idk if it's a puppet, but they're editing the same articles on SP:WP. And the images uploaded have the same problems. Please, check it. I appreciate your help. A clear example, and another one, both from today (Well, not sure about the last one).--Rastamby (talk) 01:08, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
@Rastamby: I blocked this one because of the copyright violations. In such a case, just create a mass deletion request like Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Guishín Pastofrio. All files from this account are suspicious. Yann (talk) 16:43, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

@Yann: : There's another (potentially) problematic account, and you already leave a warning on its user page. I'm fully aware these last days I've become an annoyance, so this will be my last direct request for a time. (Those are all accounts with editions motivated by recent election. Kind of SPAs...). What worries me are the images, flags, shields, and other stuff alike. Maybe some are valid, but what about this one, for example? (Not an official or real "symbol", but that doesn't matter now.)

I truly appreciate your help. Thanks for your time.--Rastamby (talk) 01:12, 11 December 2024 (UTC)

@Rastamby: Hi, File:BanderaCoalicionRepublicana.svg may be OK with {{PD-textlogo}}. Like you said, I already warned this user. I tagged one more file. Some are waiting for a permission. Nothing more can be done without a request for check user. Yann (talk) 09:16, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
@Yann:  :This aforementioned user was blocked again. --Rastamby (talk) 15:46, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Sorry. You were the admin blocking him. I failed to notice it, before leaving the last message. Probably he'll be fired from SP:WP.--Rastamby (talk) 15:47, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Yann Why did you delete File:Allama Prabhu.png?

That too without notice? are you not abusing you powers? PerspicazHistorian (talk) 15:51, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
@PerspicazHistorian: That's not your work, and a clear copyright violation. Yann (talk) 15:58, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
How and when did you prove it? PerspicazHistorian (talk) 16:03, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
I edited it myself and its my own work. Can you even find one similar image on whole internet? PerspicazHistorian (talk) 16:04, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
@PerspicazHistorian: Please read COM:DW, and stop claiming such files as own works, or you will be blocked. Yann (talk) 16:05, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
but i added new creative content to it. PerspicazHistorian (talk) 16:10, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
@PerspicazHistorian: This is NOT your work, so you are not allowed to add a Creative Commons license. If it is in the public domain, you must provide the proper source, date, author, and license. And you got a notice for this file. Read your talk page messages before complaining here. Yann (talk) 16:13, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Its not my own work even after changing and editing the image? PerspicazHistorian (talk) 16:15, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
@PerspicazHistorian: No. Please read COM:DW. Yann (talk) 16:16, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

Another user's page blanked by non-admin

Hi Yann,

Ping also @The Squirrel Conspiracy, A.Savin, and Aafi: ArionStar's user page has been blanked by RodRabelo7, without redirect. All the Revision history has disappeared. Is there any reason to delete this page at the moment? COM:MOVE says: "The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right." There may be a risk that the history gets lost, in case that the User talk:ArionStar/Archive 2 gets blanked too, and then nominated for deletion per {{Empty page}} or similar template for speedy deletion. Moreover, User talk:ArionStar/Archive 1 is now an orphan page, right? -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:56, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

@Basile Morin, thanks for the ping. Although I would be okay editors helping others in archive content from talk-pages, it doesn't seem appropriate to use the move function to entirely move a talk-page, leaving behind no history at that place. I have reverted this move and left a note on RodRabelo7's talk page. COM:MOVE doesn't apply here. However, a general advise is Archive rather than delete. Regards, Aafi (talk) 04:08, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Aafi, for the maintenance work and enlightening message. The same performer is indef blocked on Wikipedia, maybe not a coincidence. -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:36, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading Image

Hello, Yann!

I want to consult if can upload a picture without a VRT? I want to upload a picture on the infobox of Bini (group) as Creative Commons Attributio-ShareAlike 4.0. I actually DM on their Twitter account where the picture was uploaded, however, the author on pinned post stated that

Guys, wag na kayo magpaalam. bahala na kayo kung ano man gawin nyo sa mga pics. wag nyo lang ibebenta o LALAGYAN NG WATERMARK!

Translation into English:

Guys, no need to ask for permission. Do whatever you want with the photos, just don't sell them or put a watermark on them!

The author giving others the freedom to use their photos without needing to ask for permission. What do you think? Royiswariii Talk! 03:35, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

@Royiswariii: Hi, If you are not the photographer, a formal written permission is needed. The copyright holder should send it via COM:VRT. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:49, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
@Yann, The author replied to me on Twitter (X) said that I can use the picture whenever I want. However, the copyright holder seems not responding to me, I gave a instructions how will they file via VRT. There's a proof via DM that they agreed on CC-BY-SA 4.0. Is it okay I can submit it on behalf on the copyright holder and send this proof of conversation that they agreed on the licensing? Thanks. Royiswariii Talk! 03:43, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
"don't sell them" = NC. Not okay for uploading. Bedivere (talk) 04:36, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
@Royiswariii: As mentioned by Bedivere above, there is some doubt about what the author agrees, that's why a formal written permission for a free license via COM:VRT is needed. Yann (talk) 09:37, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

some more

Hi.

Where did you find that ticket? It is invalid and cannot be used as permission for these files. --Krd 07:16, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

@Krd: Here is the permission: Category talk:Alar Kotli. There have been several undeletion requests about this. Yann (talk) 09:16, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Permissions belong into file pages, not Categories nor Category talk pages. The ticket has never been accepted, but I now think it can be considered valid. I will clean this up. Krd 10:01, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Please see: Template:Alar Kotli-permission Sadly none of the examples I look into is licensed as cc-by-sa-4.0. I think it's still invalid. Suggestions? Krd 10:09, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
@Krd: Sorry, I am not sure what you mean: is the ticket invalid, or the license doesn't match the permission? I don't have access to the ticket myself. The template says Images of buildings designed by Alar Kotli (1904–1963) may be shared under {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} licence. Yann (talk) 10:40, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
…and the files in the category are under different licenses, but not under cc-by-sa-4.0. Krd 10:47, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
Perhaps @Kruusamägi: can advise? Krd 10:49, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
In that permission letter, there is a digitally signed document from the daughter of that architect (Alar Kotli, 1904–1963). CC BY-SA 4.0 is brought out as an example of a license that could be used, but the permission does not limit the selection of licenses to just that. Kruusamägi (talk) 15:42, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
So what exactly is granted? Can you modify Template:Alar Kotli-permission accordingly? Krd 05:19, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
Now the text in the template should represent the meaning of the permission accordingly. Kruusamägi (talk) 12:48, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! Krd 07:57, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi. This file had a commons license. Why was it deleted? Pirhayati (talk) 07:43, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

@Pirhayati: Hi, Only the copyright holder can give a license, so the license here is not valid. There is no evidence at the source that it was released under a free license. Yann (talk) 09:41, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
The copyright-holder has given the license in https://t.me/naserzeraatiketabsoti. What is wrong with it? Pirhayati (talk) 13:08, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
@Pirhayati: The permission should be sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Please see COM:VRT for the detailed procedure. Yann (talk) 13:29, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
It says that you don't need to contact the team when the photo is published in social media with a description or comment indicating that it is published under a free license. Pirhayati (talk) 13:53, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

Demand to unblock

Good evening Yann, As I can see you have blocked me. The photographs I upload to Commons are mine, either photos taken by me or from public domains, for example,

https://etakitto.eus/albisteak/kontxa-laspiur-zabalari-omenaldi-herrikoia-egingo-diote-barixakuan-ipuruako-merkatu-plazan As you can see in this link, it belongs to CC (Creative Commons) Wikimaribarre (talk) 16:16, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

@Wikimaribarre: Hi, I don't see any evidence of a free license at this link. For all content previously published elsewhere, a formal written permission for a free license via COM:VRT is necessary. You will be unblock when this is done. Yann (talk) 18:12, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
Just an FYI, but if you scroll down to the bottom of the page there's clearly a "Creative Commons" logo on the right side of the red banner and it seems to exist on other pages. So the website is clearly CC licensed. I can see why someone would miss it though. --Adamant1 (talk) 14:03, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
Ah right, I didn't see it. Thanks, Yann (talk) 17:07, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

Delete it all

Hi Yann. I must admit that my way to proceed has not been the right one. And besides, some time ago I had a discussion in the Spanish-speaking community associated with an article I wrote about a person. In the end, I myself asked for that article to be deleted. My relationship with that person has caused me a lot of trouble, as regards an eventual conflict of interest; and there were some related photographs. So, I'm going to ask myself to delete all the pictures uploaded by me in this whole category. I wouldn't like to be blocked in a community where I have always taken part with a lot of enthusiasm. Greetings, Fadesga (talk) 11:13, 21 December 2024 (UTC)

I'd say it was the right move to reinstate Arion's block. He's now recommenced his old ways by writing a one-sentence "article" and then showing up at WP:ITN/C and ask others to do the job for him. He hasn't changed a bit. --Cart (talk) 16:59, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

@Ikan Kekek: Hi, Yes, I saw your remark, but this is very unlikely to be own work. Yann (talk) 21:15, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
If you had read what I said, you would have seen that I agree it's not own work, and that I gave a reason supported by COM:DR instead of one contrary to COM:DR. And I also wrote that '"Deleted per nomination" or "Already deleted by X" are likely (though careless) closing remarks.' No point in arguing further, as I support the deletion, but it bugs me when closing admins don't take policy guidelines seriously, and at least some admins just don't seem to care and even get mad when I push back on this. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:44, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Artistic Femininity GIF.gif

Hi. Your name has come up in this thread, and I think you should address the discussion. An indefinite ban is very harsh and begs the question of why it wasn't preceded by a much shorter block, if that was even necessary, and deleting 9 files that were kept in a deletion request thread for a reason other than copyright violation or the like is really questionable. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:52, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

@Ikan Kekek: Hi, I reduced the block, but most of their uploads are vanity nudity pictures without educational value. Files like File:Artistic Representation of a Woman 4.jpg looks like a joke. And I would delete that one too. Yann (talk) 09:46, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
Is that one that was the subject of a successful deletion request? I would say that Croatie has been agenda-driven, hasn't shown willingness to compromise that I've seen, and that not all her uploads have been good though many have been, but on Wikivoyage, we never start with an indefinite block unless we're dealing with a spambot, vandalism-only account, block-evader or someone obviously not there to improve a travel guide. Otherwise, we have a system of increasing blocks. Does Commons not have that? Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:14, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
Yes, that's the case for copyright violations. For out of scope content, indefinite blocks will be much faster. I would be lenient for people providing useful educational content but have difficulties understanding copyright, while much more drastic for people uploading vanity and out of scope content, like in this case. Yann (talk) 12:29, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
Interesting, and not what I would have expected. I'd expect harsher treatment of people who upload only crappy nudes or a bunch of stolen porn, not some of the best ones that they photographed, along with others that are not as good. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:44, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
FYI, Taivo agrees here that a block was necessary. Yann (talk) 11:50, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Yes, but not an indefinite one. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:55, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Also, what about those 9
files that were kept per a deletion request? Have you restored them yet? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:56, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

question

Hi Yann, Thanks for your reaction about the picture that I uploaded. This is a picture of my grandfather which I found in an old family-picture-album. It was taken in 1918. You asked me to tag it. But can you please be a bit more speficic about where and what to tag. There is so much informatin about licensing that I really get confused with all the rules and regulations. Looking forward to your reaction, Best regards, Anneloes AnnaVeld1960 (talk) 11:40, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

Can you give a suggestion which tag I could or should add? Best regards. AnnaVeld1960 (talk) 19:58, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

"Semi"automated edits

I just wanted to state for the record I have never once made any edits that were automated here (or at any other WMF site; "semi" or otherwise). I have made many similar edits across pages but I wrote each one by hand in my browser (and my carpal tunnel can attest to that). I believe it was in bad faith that you evaluated my edits as such without a shred of such evidence. If someone wants to discuss my edits, I am open to that as with any other person's. It is quite foolish to evaluate someone as using automation when the very failings used to measure such point to human failings such as my inability to respond immediately, etc. I was never even asked one thing that I could respond to before being blocked. —Uzume (talk) 22:26, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

Question about account

Hi Yann, Great day to you. I have a question that I am going to ask to you about something that is related to me, this question is mainly for the administrator Taivo, but, it seems like he is taking a break off of Wikimedia Commons for a while, I did see him recently editing Wikimedia Commons in the present, but he is not replying to me or showing any signs that he have seen the message that I had left on his user talk page, he is not replying to anyone that have left a message on his talk page either. Furthermore for that, this question will be shifted to you. Here's my question, before there were any sanctions or blocks on my account, when I searched up my name KhantWiki on Google web search bar, my name always pop up with the Wikimedia Commons, but I don't know why I had not been seeing it now, is it perhaps because of the sanctions and blocks that used to be lifted upon my account? I want my name and account to pop up on Google like the way it was, before the sanctions. Is there any way to solve this or any advice you have for this, or is this normal? I had already signed my name on both Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. I would also like to share concerns about my English Wikipedia page, too. There isn't any sanctions or blocks placed on my account of English Wikipedia, but I suspect that it also appeared on Google before, when I have searched it up, it disappears, and only my Burmese Wikipedia account pops up when I search my name on Google. The most clear evidence that I have for the disappearance of my name on Google is Wikimedia Commons and now Wikipedia. I had gained enough knowledge about Wikimedia Commons as to not upload copyrighted pictures again, there are many images in the public domain that I can freely upload, I had also given a credible promise to Taivo and the user who have shown about Taivo to me, Thank you. Enhancing999

No insult since I seem to be the only one on here who can be criticized, but do you really think denying Enhancing999's unblock request when there was only a day left and he said he wouldn't do it again was worth losing an otherwise productive editor over? Adamant1 (talk) 01:17, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi, It is quite clear to me that Enhancing999 didn't understand the issue, so I don't see any reason for unblocking. Yann (talk) 10:01, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
I get that you think he didn't understand the issue. His appeal wasn't that far off from the problem though. Taivo did the same nonsense to me when I appealed the most recent block. I don't except you guys to unblock people who are clearly being disingenuous. Refusing to unblock someone who's making a good faith effort to apologize and correct the issue because they didn't phrase the message 100% perfectly seems super pointless though. If nothing else it just creates unnecessary animosity towards admins and makes people less inclined to contribute after their unblocked. No one learns a lesson from it. I certainly didn't. Like I'm going to act better now that Taivo refused to unblock me because he didn't like my apology. Sure. It just comes off as needlessly petty and unsympathetic towards users. --Adamant1 (talk) 21:38, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

1974 Australian UFO reports undeleted

Happy New Year to Australia. Abzeronow (talk) 18:10, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Undeletion of File:Central Park Snowman.jpg

Yann, I noticed that you undeleted File:Central Park Snowman.jpg by American painter Sanford Ross and gave it a PD-old-70-expired license. However, both the date field and the flickr link date the painting to circa 1947, so it can't have been published before 1930. I think it will have to redeleted and added to the Category:Undelete in 2043 (1947 + 95 + 1) unless we have reason to believe it qualifies for one of the other US PD rationales. —RP88 (talk) 07:15, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

@RP88: This is probably in the public domain due to lack of copyright notice or renewal. I will add that information later. I already changed the license. Yann (talk) 10:47, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

Undeletion of Steamboat Willie

Hello. I am not super familiar with Commons, but it appears my upload was deleted as an "exact or scaled down duplicate". This could not be further from the truth. My upload was painstakingly created as a *response* to the inferior, larger duplicate on Commons. It is in AV1 and not VP8, which is 1.5 generations newer than VP8 and provides better quality per byte. I tried to draw admin attention to this and get the inferior version replaced with my version, but I was ignored.

Gallica / Agence Rol

Yann (talk) 18:49, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

A slight dilemma

Hi, Yann - Catherine Disher wants her old image changed to this new image File:Photo of Catherine Disher.jpg which I've already done on en.WP. There is a list of all the pages using the old image at the link I provided. I changed the en.Wiki image a while back, and I think (hope) I managed to change one other on the list today, but there are several more to go. I'm an English editor; therefore, not familiar with the other language Wikis. Can you help, please? Atsme Talk 📧 02:28, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

@Atsme: Hi, You can edit other projects, or let a message on the article talk page. But this new image is not better than the old one. Could you ask her to send a good portrait? If she can't make one herself, she could ask someone else to take the picture, and then send a permission. Thanks, Yann (talk) 09:50, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
I guess it boils down to a matter of opinion. As a VRT member, I can confirm that she provided and requested that File:Photo of Catherine Disher.jpg be used as her BLP portrait in place of the other image. See for more details. I am aware that I'm a global editor, but the translator was not working efficiently for me when I attempted to make the changes, so rather than screw something up, I sought your help. I'll try it once more. Atsme Talk 📧 10:37, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
@Atsme: Here is a good picture. Yann (talk) 10:44, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
But Yann, we all looked better in our 20s. Regardless, it is (a) not representative of her today, (b) it is copyrighted, and (c) a person should be able to choose a photo they prefer to be remembered by on their own bio, especially considering they are not allowed to do much else about what's written in their bio by other people. The image she chose speaks to her persona which is the very essence of a biography. I've updated the images per her request. Atsme Talk 📧 12:06, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

So do i have to tag it with PD-self or can i tag it with CC_by-sa-4.0.

Commons Re-instatement request: File:Sir Frank Mears.jpg

Yann,

Your reply does not address my request to have the image file [Sir Frank Mears.jpg] re-instated.

I resent the implications that I have provided false information about the photograph and that more than one of my contributions may be of concern.

Sir Frank Mears died on 25th January 1953 while on a visit to his son in New Zealand. The photograph [Sir Frank Mears.jpg] is therefore clearly over 70 years old and by my reckoning no longer subject to UK copyright. I don't have a precise date for it, but as it shows Sir Frank in his later years and posed in his professional capacity, it was probably taken in Scotland sometime between 1945 and 1952. Mears had travelled to New Zealand in 1952.

I would be grateful for your guidance on whether copyright has expired on this image and, if not, why not. If you consider that, for some reason, copyright has not expired in relation to [Sir Frank Mears.jpg], I would be grateful if you would tell me on what date you consider it will have expired and can therefore be considered available for use as a commons image.

Kind regards,

Sandy Fortingal Sandy Fortingal (talk) 12:02, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

@Sandy Fortingal: Hi, There are several wrong things here: 1. You can't use {{PD-old-70}} is the author is anonymous, like you did. 2. For {{PD-New Zealand}} to apply, you have to prove that this was first published in New Zealand (for example in a newspaper). 3. Then you have to take US copyright into consideration. It would be in the public domain in USA if published in New Zealand before 1946, but again, that has to be proved. If first published in UK, then it will be in the public domain in USA 95 years after the publication date, so most probably not yet in the public domain. Yann (talk) 12:14, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

@Phsmet: Who is the photographer? I don't see any free license at this page. So probably no. Yann (talk) 20:07, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed you deleted several images I had uploaded, namely portraits of several members of the Rhode Island General Assembly (examples: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mike_chippendale_portrait.jpg, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Victoria_gu_portrait.jpg, a few others).

You cited Commons:COM:NETCOPYVIO, however I am not sure why. All of these images are works of the Rhode Island General Assembly, and I included in the description of all of these images that they were both works of the State of Rhode Island and cited Rhode Island General Law § 38-2-3, which states "all records maintained or kept on file by any public body, whether or not those records are required by any law or by any rule or regulation, shall be public records and every person or entity shall have the right to inspect and/or copy those records at such reasonable time as may be determined by the custodian thereof."

Given that the portraits of these legislators were works created by a public body in the State of Rhode Island, they are public records and are allowed to be copied. I have personally verified this with the Rhode Island Secretary of State's Office and the Rhode Island General Assembly's legal counsel, and I suggest you do the same if you do not think my above explanation is sufficient. I would request that these portraits be un-deleted if possible and restored to the Wikipedia pages they were on. SusImposter49 (talk) 04:44, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

@SusImposter49: Hi, I am not sure if these files are in the public domain, which is different than the law you mention, but I restored them and created a regular DR instead. The license you added is wrong, and that's probably why they were nominated for deletion. Please read it, and Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States#US_States, and correct it. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:06, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

Clarification

So that I know better, what information tells you when those old Lithuanian photos were published, thereby enabling you to deduce that their copyright has expired? Thanks. DS (talk) 18:17, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

@DS: We usually assume that photographs are published at the time of creation, unless evidence to the contrary. At the time, photographers handling their works to somebody outside of close family constituted publication. Yann (talk) 18:27, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
Oh, that's interesting. Photos from the era of "only [professionals / super-dedicated hobbyists who did their own developing] had cameras" are assumed to be published? Is there a discussion to this effect somewhere? Approximately when did this era end? DS (talk) 18:55, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
@DS: Well, it depends on the country. This is based on US law, but I would say generally until 1945, when cameras became much more common. I think only photographs which the photographer or their heirs donated to an archive, which then published them for the first time should be considered unpublished until recently. Please see Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Found photos from the Thomas Hawk collection as example of DR kept based on this assumption. Yann (talk) 19:32, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

Y como tiene dominio público la subí pero me la borraron, y lo mismo con la de la tromba marina de Caimito. Y el resto las tire desde mi casa. Supercellofphoto (talk) 23:45, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

@Supercellofphoto: Hi, Nowadays, almost everything is under a copyright by default. You have to assume that images on social media and the Internet are under a copyright. So do not copyright unless you have a formal written permission for a free license from the copyright holder. If you have such a permission, please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:05, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
Saludos, Yann (talk) 09:05, 10 January 2025 (UTC)</Google Translate>
Hi Yann, if one has "to assume that images on social media and the Internet are under a copyright" - why did you remove the Copyvio on two pages (PAGE 1 / PAGE 2), containing photos with watermarks from an Internet platform that expressly prohibits the use of its images (§ 12. Propiedad intelectual e industrial)?
The owner of the depicted envelopes is an antiques dealer from Seville, who is also the photographer of the objects and therefore the author of the images. This is decisive for the authorship, not the age of the depicted objects! I might be wrong, but in my opinion this is a copyright violation. Best regards from Germany --EugenioNoel (talk) 15:06, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
@EugenioNoel: These 2 envelopes are obviously in the public domain, and scanning them does not create a new copyright. Yann (talk) 17:24, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
That makes sense to me - thank you very much. EugenioNoel (talk) 17:43, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi, Yann! I'm here to consult if this logo suitable for PD-textlogo? ( ) Royiswariii Talk! 16:00, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

@Yann It seems the logo was previewed as a Placeholder view, I'm talking about this , , , , Royiswariii Talk! 09:49, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
@Royiswariii: Ah OK. ;o) The first and the last ones: no. For the others, may be, it depends on the country of origin. You better ask on COM:VPC to have others opinions. Yann (talk) 09:55, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi Yann, I noticed that the User:Adiiitya has been uploading numerous logos, flags, and insignias to Wikimedia Commons. Many of these appear to be either directly taken from the internet or direct recreations of those files. However, the files are being uploaded with the claim of "own work."

I am concerned about the accuracy of the copyright status and the information provided in the file descriptions. For instance, File:Blue Ensign of British Bihar and Orissa Province.jpg was uploaded with the claim of "Own work". This file seems to derive elements from the British India flag and the Bihar emblem. Additionally, there is uncertainty about whether the province ever officially had a flag of this nature. Could you please review the uploaded files for accuracy and compliance? MaxA-Matrix (talk) 15:45, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi, I deleted some files obviously not OK, and Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Adiiitya for the rest. Yann (talk) 18:09, 22 January 2025 (UTC)

Block evasion

Hello Yann, I hope you are well. On January 16th, you blocked Rogério da Silva Santana vai (referred to as "vai"). It seems he created this account right after his original account, Rogério da Silva Santana viu (referred to as "viu"), was blocked on pt.wiki for vandalism. The "vai" account uploaded a file that "viu" posted on his pt.wiki talk page, which led me to tag it for deletion here and block him from editing that page. The original "viu" account is still active here and has received a few deletion requests since then. I apologize if this message is convoluted, but I believe this is a clear case of block evasion. Thank you in advance. BraunOBruno (talk) 13:15, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

✓ Done Blocked, out of scope and duplicate files deleted. Yann (talk) 15:37, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

Help with a {{COM:NETCOPYVIO}}

Hi! I'm not sure if I can list a file for speedy deletion if there is already a deletion discussion (since November!) open about it, so I'm turning to you for help. Could you please take a look at the file since the discussion imo makes it clear that this is a copyvio? - Yupik (talk) 18:05, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

✓ Done Deleted. Yann (talk) 18:14, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
Thank you! - Yupik (talk) 01:23, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

Hello,

I noticed that you have seen the copyright investigations that I added. First off, I acknowledge that all of the pictures that I have added the Copyvio template to are not my work.

Second of all, I request that you delete these photos. I was previously unaware of the uploading rules on Wikimedia and the copyright status on certain images.

Also, I am not too sure what to do about the images from the NPS (Sonoitac, Santa Maria de Magdalena, Cuquiarachi). Most likely they are public domain, but I'd still like to bring that to your attention.

Finally, I will not be uploading many images on Wikimedia anymore. I believe there is a process to upload images that are not your work, so I will use this if needed.

However, one of the main reasons I have a Wiki account was to edit and improve pages relating to Spanish missions, so I have no problem with not being able to upload images on Wikimedia, if it comes to that.

Thank you for your understanding. GoldenArmorYeah (talk) 22:48, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

@GoldenArmorYeah: Hi, Sometimes, it is not possible to find pictures under a free license or in the public domain, but we have to live with that. Yann (talk) 09:33, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

File:Indy Fuel new logo.png and others

Hi Yann,
What is your rationale for concluding that this logo is clearly above COM:TOO United States?
Why did you tag it with {{No permission since|month=January|day=24|year=2025}} and then deleted the file (uploaded half a year ago) yourself in the same minute? As you know, the text in the template says “… the file will be deleted seven days after this tag was added …”.
I noticed that this is a common practice of you. --Leyo 23:47, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

@Leyo: Hi, Please stay civil, or you might be blocked. This is quite obviously not a simple logo. You can request undeletion, but I will oppose it. Yann (talk) 10:30, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

Hey @Yann I see you nominated almost all of my uploads for deletion. I know I have uploaded most of them as own work. However, that was not intentional. I don't know much about copyright licences. If you could let me know about what changes do I have to make to the respective files, it would be a great help. Adiiitya (talk) 16:41, 25 January 2025 (UTC)

@Adiiitya: Hi, As I said on your talk page, correct all the files you have uploaded, and then mention that in the deletion requests. Do not add any more files with incorrect information, or copied from the Internet without a permission, or you will be blocked. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:20, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
I have a query. Could you tell me why files like which are in public domain have been nominated for deletion but not the ones like File:Badge of the Indian Air Force.svg and File:CRPF Flag.svg ? Adiiitya (talk) 19:51, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
@Adiiitya: Why would this be in the public domain? It is the same for all 3 files. You have to give evidence. Who made them? From which information? Yann (talk) 20:17, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
If it is the same for all the 3 files, why aren't the other ones nominated for deletion? Adiiitya (talk) 08:24, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
BTW Please check if the edits made at are enough so that I can do the same with the other files. Adiiitya (talk) 08:37, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
@Adiiitya: Hi, For {{PD-India}} to apply, it should be more than 60 years. Currently it is claimed to be from 2024. Some works by the Indian government are OK with {{GODL-India}}, but, if I remember correctly, insignias are not accepted under this license. Please check COM:India. Thanks, Yann (talk) 12:20, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
But the same licence is applied for this file , and it has no issue, right? Adiiitya (talk) 12:29, 26 January 2025 (UTC)
Well, the issue is the same. There is no information or link showing the date of the original insignia. I let a message on the uploader's talk page. Yann (talk) 12:52, 26 January 2025 (UTC)

User:ThePinkShoes

I’d appreciate if you removed all their vandalistic deletion requests since that was the main reason I reported them. Dronebogus (talk) 09:20, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Whale tail display.jpg

You closed this, but left the DR for the crop open.

I agree with the nominator that the arguments for both images are similar. The request for the crop is well overdue to be closed anyway. So be consistent: close the request for the crop, or re-open this request. Brianjd (talk) 10:32, 27 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi, I uploaded an image of an actress from a movie trailer for "Death on the Nile". The trailer (and the movie) was cinematographed by Haris Zambarloukos, who is credited and had uploaded the trailer to his Vimeo account under a CC BY SA license. However, it was later deleted due to a copyright violation. How is this possible? It was tagged by the cinematographer himself as CC BY SA. Lililolol (talk) 03:54, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

@Lililolol: I don't think this license is valid. Haris Zambarloukos is the cinematographer, but only the producer could provide a free license. You can ask on COM:VPC if you want more information. Sorry. Yann (talk) 10:47, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

here you gave me the last worning without promply explaining why scrinshots from the site under CC BY 4.0 licensing cant be uploaded and present a copiright violation. Request for Review and Deletion of Copyrighted Images on Commons

Dear Mr. Yann,

I hope this finds you well.

I am writing to kindly request your assistance in reviewing and deleting certain images that I previously uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Upon further review, I have realized that these images may infringe upon copyright regulations, and I would like to ensure compliance with Wikimedia's policies.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and truly appreciate your time and effort in addressing this matter. Please let me know if you require any further information from my side.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Best regards, Adharass (talk) 13:50, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

@Adharass: I already deleted some files. Which files do you want deleted? Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:08, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

User:Salto Loco

Hello, could I get your advice regarding this ongoing situation? Salto Loco replaced several maps depicting de facto boundaries with maps removing disputed borders despite the maps being in relation to enforced laws (hence the reason they depicted de facto boundaries). This is clearly politically motivated as evidenced by his previous comments (, , ). I reported several of the maps for speedy deletion to prevent further cross-wiki POV pushing on his part, and you deleted some of them - thank you for that, however a couple remained due to them still being used by the articles Salto Loco edited. I did not submit a report to the admin noticeboard because the user seemingly stopped globally replacing the maps and began discussing, however he once again reinstated File:Status of euthanasia in Europe.svg across several articles and just keeps reiterating the same few comments on every discussion board refusing to budge from his position with all other users telling him the same thing (, , , ). The only user supporting his position is LeontinaVarlamonva, who earlier attempted to do the same thing as Salto Loco - globally delete maps with disputed borders. The user has now shifted the discussion to ridiculous accusations of being paid by Russia? () I have reverted his replacement of the map, however as I am writing this message he is once again actively reinstating his upload across several wiki sites. His most recent comment here once again demonstrates that he is unable to separate his political views from his editing (). What should the next steps in this situation be? Ratherous (talk) 15:05, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

Hi, I sent them a strong warning. The proper way to deal with this is to create a version where Crimea is part of Ukraine, and then use that version. It is up to each Wikipedia project to decide which version is to be used. One version should be named "(de facto)" and the other one "(de jure)". Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:22, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for the warning. He is still however unilaterally replacing the map across different articles regardless of the ongoing discussions he started across many pages. While having two options for different wiki sites makes sense, at the moment what's happening is just Salto Loco pushing his version on every article rather than Wikipedia projects really deciding anything. --Ratherous (talk) 15:30, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
Commons does not concern with what happens on Wikipedia. You have to take the issue there. Yann (talk) 15:46, 30 January 2025 (UTC)
