Media about phenotype heritability (parent-offspring similarities)

I could not find any media specifically about similarities of biological appearance between offspring and their ancestors like their parents.

So far, there only is Category:Parents with offspring and Category:Genetic studies on human face in Category:Similarity but nothing specifically about parent-offspring similarities. Also could not find any media in the relevant Wikipedia articles/sections. Prototyperspective (talk)

Chick culling video (chick shredder for eggs)

I'd like to see a video of male chicks going into the shredder for people's eggs. There's only images in Category:Unwanted chick killing and on farmtransparency.org and no CCBY video on YouTube that I could find. It's important eg because in-egg-sexing is now possible. Prototyperspective (talk)

Topic: Brookfield Place (Toronto) public plaza

Comments:

Kind of a shot in the dark, but hoping for some help finding pictures of a public plaza in Toronto. It's outside the TD Canada Trust Tower, adjacent to the Allen Lambert Galleria (coordinates on Google Maps). We have loads of photos of the tower and the galleria, along with other buildings in the Brookfield complex, but I can't find anything here or on Flickr/other regular sources of the outdoor plaza. It was designed by artist Scott Burton, would be useful for his article. Thanks if anyone has a lead on images/ideas for where to look! 19h00s (talk)

@19h00s If you’re unable to find a photo, I can always take one for you. Maybe a week from now, if no one else does? PascalHD (talk)
@PascalHD That would be awesome if you have the time! I'll keep looking in the meantime - thank you so much for the offer. Even just one photo of the overall plaza would be awesome, but I'd love to get some close-ups of the benches, light posts, and fountain in the center as well (presumably it's empty given the time of year, though). Feel free to hit me up on my Talk page next week.
Have a great weekend, thanks again :) 19h00s (talk)

✅ Sugar made from beets

I would like pictures of sugar made from beet. We have images of sugar beets and the Category:Sugar beets but I didn't find images of the end product. It can be a pile of white powder sugar, or a package of sugar made from beets. Thanks. Mateussf (talk)

@Mateussf I gave it a try, see Category:Beet sugar. I'm an amateur photographer, though, and don't know how to assess image quality, so I took a bunch of photos with my Google Pixel 8 Pro (photos 01-09) and Canon EOS 250D (photos 10-24) and uploaded them all. Feel free to nominate any duplicate-y and low-quality/useless images for deletion (ping me in the DR or link to this statement of mine, which I made on the day of upload, to speedy delete the excess files). If you have any tips regarding camera settings of the Canon EOS 250D to take better photos of the sugar, let me know and I'll give it another go. (Though, note that I don't have any camera/photo equipment beyond the camera (and the kit lense) itself, so, I can't reduce shaking by using a tripod or anything like that.) Nakonana (talk)
Oh, and I have all images in RAW: the Pixel phone saves them in .dng format and the Canon in .CR3. It doesn't seem to be possible to upload any of those formats to Commons, though. But if you (or someone else) wants to play around with them to maybe get a better result out of them, feel free to email me and I can send you the raws. Nakonana (talk)

Map of Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could please make a derivative map of just the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Canada using these two maps?

Map in English: here

Map in Serbian: here

It would be very much appreciated.

All the best,
PidgeCopetti (talk)

Basically that's would be just a map of Canada, no? Or to put it differently, how would a map of Canada as a Serbian diocese differ from any other map of Canada? - Jmabel ! talk

Choropleth map that shows number of subscribers of subreddits & state of censorship

A world map that visualizes

  • the number of subscribers as well as
  • the degree of censorship

of the country's/countries' main subreddit. Lots of subreddits like /r/de are heavily censored arbitrarily by moderators depending for example whether the mods politically disagree with opinions of the user per their comments or just about any other imaginable reason. So I think it would be useful to also see which subreddits heavily suppress reasonably-free speech.

A country usually has realistically just one main subreddit. It's a bit more complicated for countries that do have their own subreddit but speak a language that another subreddit is for – such as Austria with /r/austria and /r/de – maybe these could get some symbol to denote that. The censorship data may need to get collected first but that may not be super difficult and could maybe readily be done online if somebody built this. Countries without that data would only show the coloring representing the number of subscribers. Prototyperspective (talk)

@Prototyperspective: is there some objective scale or measurement of degree of censorship? Or some entity that claims to measure this? I can imagine all sorts of problems coming to such a measurement. - Jmabel ! talk
Yes that would be a difficulty there. I suggest the people or person who build this, does create criteria for which level of censorship. So e.g. no significant reports of censorship = 0, too stringent rules = level 1, occasional arbitrary deletion & bans = level 2, systematic or frequent arbitrary deletions & bans due to deviating from the subjective opinion of the mods or some political doctrine = level 3. If there is no external study one can cite for this (and researchers could do this research after reading this file request) then level 1 would be sourced via an archived version of the subreddit with the subreddit rules and the other levels via lists of screenshot-proven examples of deletions & bans that yes somebody would need to aggregate and compile. --Prototyperspective (talk)
Related (this could be used for this): d:Wikidata:List of country and language-specific subreddits (one could also color countries by fraction of country population instead of absolute subscriber counts). Similar map "[Each country's subreddit and its number of members](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/17rhnpx/each_countrys_subreddit_and_its_number_of_members/)" (not free-licensed, not also enabling the integration of censorship data, not considering the language subreddits which often are larger than the country-specific ones). --Prototyperspective (talk)

Category:Civil War Monument, Binghamton, New York

While we have a couple of photos (one of them mine) where the Civil War Monument (a.k.a. Soldiers and Sailors Monument) in Courthouse Square, Binghamton, New York is visible, we don't have any photos where it is the primary subject and which show it well. In particular, the figure of Liberty or Victory atop the column can't be properly seen in either of the photos we have. Good photos of the other figures on the monument would be great to have, too. - Jmabel ! talk

US Navy missile launchers

I was looking for pictures of the Mk 32, Mk 48 and Mk 56 missile launchers for use in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_Guided_Missile_Launching_Systems Especially the Mk48 and Mk56 seem to have plenty of images, some of them from government organizations - surely there's at least some free ones Hal Nordmann (talk) 11:44, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

@Hal Nordmann they seem to be known under some different names too? Namely RIM-7 VL and RIM-162C? Have you checked Category:RIM-7 Sea Sparrow and Category:RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow? Or is that something else? Nakonana (talk) 16:38, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
I looked through what you linked, no luck. And manual search didn't turn up anything either. So it looks like images will have to be obtained elsewhere. As for where, the list has their users mentioned - so maybe they have something? Seaforces.org has a decent collection on the Mk48 and Mk56, but little attribution info - though it could inform other Wikipedians what to look for.
I was about to send this, but I noticed we do have an image of the Mk32 launcher - though it might need clipping to just the launcher on the right (could you or anyone else do that?): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Midship_of_ROCN_Yi_Yang_(FFG-939)_20140327.jpg Hal Nordmann (talk) 17:15, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

We don't have a photo of Dr Kaoru Shima. He founded the Shima Hospital in Hiroshima, which was ground zero for the bombing, then re-founded it on the same spot after the war. Photos of Tilly's anti-Putin carnival sculptures

Photos of the moving carnival sculptures of the German artist Jacques Tilly who was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison recently if he was to go to Russia.

There is not much free-licensed art about the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine and these ones are especially notable due to the sentencing and because even without it they were somewhat popular and got reported on. The one on the right (about their sentencing) is the only one on Commons currently.

Mainly the one of Putin bathing in blood and the one of Putin getting a blowjob by the Russian Orthodox Church's Patriarch Kirill of Moscow.

Topic: Sibtechgaz factory

Comments:

I am looking for a free photograph for the Russian Wikipedia article .

The requested object is the main facility of JSC “Sibtechgaz” named after F. I. Kim, a producer of technical, medical and food gases in Novosibirsk, Russia.

Suggested subject:

  • exterior view of the main facility / entrance / administrative building;
  • approximate coordinates: 55.0183 N, 82.9767 E.

The photo should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under a free license, preferably CC BY-SA 4.0.

Please avoid using photos from 2GIS, Yandex Maps, company websites or other non-free sources. A new photo taken by the uploader would be ideal. FingerWiki (talk) 04:19, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

@MONTENSEM: By "the hyperlink" do you just mean the URL of the original, or do you mean something else? - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
I think URL might be useful for verification in addition to attribution: The Government of the United States, United States Government Manual (U.S. Government Publishing Office, 2025) MONTENSEM (talk) 23:01, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
@MONTENSEM: I would suggest that you request an SVG of this at Commons:Graphic_Lab/Illustration_workshop (being as specific as possible about what you want). Someone will probably be easily able to create it; people doing that sort of work are probably not looking at this page. - Jmabel ! talk 16:29, 26 May 2026 (UTC)

Berg family in music parlor

This was a request to upload https://viewer.onb.ac.at/1187F7E1/14 (and to crop it), which did not arrive at a consensus that we can be confident it is in the public domain.

https://viewer.onb.ac.at/1187F7E1/14

cropped image for use in article on the opera Wozzeck, under "Broader milieu" (identities: Alban Berg seated, Charly Berg piano, Smaragda Berg singing) MONTENSEM (talk) 09:38, 23 May 2026 (UTC)

@MONTENSEM: it's not obvious to me that that is out of copyright. Do you have some specific reason to think it is? - Jmabel ! talk 20:53, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I've been somewhat uncertain myself, but another editor suggested it should be long out of copyright, because the image is pre-1914/before World War I. The precise dating is unknown. The marginal inscription around the photo should be cropped out; it must have been added long after the photo was taken. Information at https://search.onb.ac.at/permalink/f/128lc6g/ONB_alma21292575500003338 places the album in the Alban Berg Estate (Nachlass Alban Berg). Smaragda is on the right as a young girl; she was born in 1886 per the ÖNB entry. Thank you again, MONTENSEM (talk) 23:13, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
Also under the copyright symbol at https://viewer.onb.ac.at/1187F7E1/14, it reads:
Rechte (Rights)
Bereitgestellt von (provided by)
Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library)
That is, no copyright is asserted; there is no rights holder (Rechteinhaber). MONTENSEM (talk) 23:17, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
@MONTENSEM: Hi, Copyright doesn't work that way. It is automatic from the time of creation. This is probably in the public domain in Europe, but copyright in USA is uncertain (cf. COM:URAA). Yann (talk) 08:48, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
Answer is NO to the main tests, and per the table footnote, "The Austrian copyright law of 1996 restored all works to 70pma as per the EU directive, but this law occurred after the URAA date so the older terms on photographs were still in effect on January 1, meaning pre-1932 photos would not have been restored in the US even though they were in Austria shortly thereafter." MONTENSEM (talk) 09:10, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
Yes, that's right, but this picture is dated 1934. Yann (talk) 09:49, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
The inscription does not date the photograph. It refers to the memory (erinnerung) of someone's grandparents' house, for the occasion of a 1934 baptism (unclear whose). MONTENSEM (talk) 19:03, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
@MONTENSEM: You seem to have more confidence about this than Yann or I. Is something preventing you from uploading this yourself and using the CropTool to extract a derivative file with the crop you want? Because I'm not confident enough that I understand the copyright situation to take responsibility for this. - Jmabel ! talk 02:58, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
Well, I am confident about the dating, but I hesitate also, absent certainty or consensus, I guess. What a shame. Thank you both. MONTENSEM (talk) 09:51, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
no point to collapse this. even if it's not already in the public domain, being anonymous and before 1935 it's gonna be in public domain in usa in a few years.--RoyZuo (talk) 08:28, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

Ulrich Siegmund

I have not been able to find a public domain photograph of German politician Ulrich Siegmund. Here is a watermarked one from getty images. It would be preferable to have one taken at a bit of a distance like that one, but I am not super picky and ultimately a headshot will do. Cool314 (talk) 03:40, 24 May 2026 (UTC)

I would think he and/or his party would want us to have one, so someone might reach out to them. - Jmabel ! talk 20:54, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
@Cool314: if you tip me off where he might appear at an event without registration i could try photoing. unfortunately in his current schedule https://www.instagram.com/ulrich_siegmund i only see pre registered events.--RoyZuo (talk) 08:28, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

Altos Hornos de México, Monclova Steel Works

The Altos Hornos de México in Monclova were formed in the 1940s and are the largest steel works in Mexico and one of the largest in North America. Images should include panorama fotos of the whole area and and details fotos of smelters, mills, furnaces, electrical power plants, freight rails, the nearby mines and the ferroduct (cableway) from the mines. Current imagery only has one blurry 400px foto taken from distance. ~2026-32532-42 (talk) 07:20, 1 June 2026 (UTC)

The Usina Itatinga was built in 1910 and connects to the Santos port with a transmission line. Most of the infrastructure is still in originate state. There were two remarkable steel towers on each side of the Santos river, which are probably the oldest and for a long time, also the largest electricity pylons in South America. Coordinates are:

Anemia

New (comparison) images for the visible symptoms of anemia would be greatly appreciated. The currently used image on w:Anemia is just bad: from the lighting, to the fact that it is not a reasonable comparison to a healthy state. The ideal image(s) should:

  • be from the same person
  • have known "severity" and bilirubin values (if yellowing is visible)
  • show the nails clearly
  • illustrate the differences stemming from skin color
  • not be from a case excessively severe or from one where jaundice is the dominant feature Karsenat (talk) 17:16, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

Hi, I hope this is the right venue for this request. Would anyone be able to find a clearly identifiable photo of the music producer Ben Hillier? It'd be quite useful for his English wiki and for others like en:Nadine Shah. One of him playing drums might be ideal. I'm afraid I'm not at all versed in uploading anything to Commons.
