Soviet General Staff military maps
Are Soviet General Staff military maps in the public domain? Can they be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? S. Mochar (talk) 18:23, 16 July 2026 (UTC)

Título para imagen de Wikimedia
Buenas tardes.

My photo keeps getting removed
I have uploaded my own image of actress Yali Topol Margalith numerous times and it gets removed, can anyone help me ? Jemimashoots (talk) 21:08, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Jemimashoots: How can other people see that this image, File:Yali Topol Margalith.jpg, is indeed yours, meaning it was photographed by you? Does it have meaningful and intact EXIF? Was it published somewhere else beforehand? If you do not have the original source file, meaning a JPEG as produced by your camera (be it a phone camera or a DSLR or similar), then I fear that it's not possible to demonstrate your authorship. @Didym: You deleted the file, what was the EXIF situation at that point? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:27, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- Ok I understand, strange that iPhones do not state it was taken by me as my phone is in my name. Also strange that the original image of Yali somehow screenshotted from a random and not very flattering picture of hers was put up without her permission and was not removed? Jemimashoots (talk) 06:26, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Jemimashoots: there are a couple of things going on here.
- If a file you uploaded is deleted please do not upload that file again. In the future if one of your files is inappropriately deleted, either contact the administrator who deleted it so that the two of you can discuss the matter, or start an undeletion request. If you simply re-upload the file after it has been deleted, it is likely that your account will be blocked.
- It looks like at time of deletion the EXIF data in the file consisted of just date and size (nothing about device it was photographed with or about exposure length, for example.) Assuming you did take it with an iPhone, that means some EXIF was stripped. There are a few ways that files can be uploaded from an iPhone. I gather that some of them keep EXIF data and others strip it. (I don't us an iPhone myself, so I don't know the details. Someone who does may want to weigh in.) I do know that if you also have a laptop or desktop computer, connecting the two, using a normal file copy to copy the image file to the computer, and then uploading from there should consistently preserve EXIF data.
- At this point, given what's already happened, if you want the file restored, your best bet is to go the COM:VRT route. You can carry on a confidential correspondence with the Volunteer Response Team to establish to their satisfaction that you took the photograph in question and that the upload was legitimate. Assuming you still have the original file on your iPhone, with the EXIF, that should be pretty easy. If not, it may be a more complicated process. - Jmabel ! talk 07:01, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Question about freedom of panorama in relation to country
COM:Scope dictates that all files must "be freely licensed or public domain according to both the law of the United States and according to the law of the source country" but images of artwork/sculptures etc created after 198 taken with COM:Freedom of panorama are not public domain in the US. However, everything from Category:Wax figures in the Madame Tussauds London is still up despite not being "freely licensed or public domain according to [...] the law of the United States". I would appreciate some clarification on this matter, thanks! Paccyd33 (talk) 01:42, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Paccyd33: No idea what you mean by "after 198" (I'm guessing you meant some year, but it still doesn't make sense for any law I know).
- In general, our FOP policy is that if a photo is taken in a manner that follows Freedom of Panorama for the source country, we do not separately apply the more restrictive U.S. FOP rules. Yes, this is somewhat inconsistent with how we generally do things, but it is the policy we've adopted, and neither the Wikimedia Foundation as such (the "umbrella organization" under which Commons sits) nor WMF's legal department have expressed concerns about that policy, which has been in place as long as I remember (certainly well over a decade, probably more like two decades). - Jmabel ! talk 07:10, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Process for verifying and submitting a licenced photograph
I have a photo that I want to use with an edit I want to submit for publication. The Photographer is releasing it to me for use. Does Wikipedia provide an application to submit to the photographer? What paperwork must I submit? TenTalNet (talk) 16:26, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- @TenTalNet: Thank you for asking and your intent to strictly observe copyrights! In a nutshell: you have to demonstrate an agreement that the actual copyright holder consents to a free license. It is also OK to prove that you're actually owning any copy- and neighbouring intellectual property rights if applicable, so that you can make the licensing. A release "For Wikipedia" is not enough. There's a comprehensive guide at COM:THIRD dealing with such questions. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:32, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Upload signature to a biography
Hello! I’m not sure if the signature of anthropologist Berta Ribeiro — which I found on a copy of a document she authored here — meets the necessary criteria to be uploaded to Commons, because she lived in Brazil. Could an editor evaluate whether it can be used? And if so, could upload the image, please. It seems difficult for me to do on my current smartphone... Thanks in advance! Hi dear fellows, in my opinion is not a good idea to welcome all users, vandals and spammers especially, I think welcoming should not be an automatic process, it would be done manually only to users who demonstrate good intentions, as occurs on other wikis. ~2026-41030-80 (talk) 00:23, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
Deleting my content
Hi, my name is BoltonArt. Some years ago I created a page for a living person based on the biography he wrote for himself as a uni project. I meant to practice this not leaving it on wiki for years but I recently have realized that this person has been misusing the publicity he thinks he’s gained from this wiki page. As the author and creator of the page “Houmayoun Mahmoudi” I wish to request deletion of this page. Please can you help many thanks 🙏 Boltonart (talk) 11:51, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Proper use of wikimedia commons content on https://web.locusmap.app ?
Hello,
I came across this website that "hot links" content from wikimedia commons.
There is no mentions of the author or licence, just a link to the content file page one you have clicked on the image thumbnail (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chateau-de-Gisors.jpg).
Is this a proper user of wikimedia content or some attribution is missing ?

Uploading a photograph of a child's drawing
I wanted to upload this photo of a child's drawing, I have permission from the Reddit user who took the photo but obviously it would be impossible to track down the kid who drew it. Can I still upload it? Would the Reddit user be able to submit a license email? Would they even have to? https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbphones/comments/1v4jf7c/found_this_note_posted_outside_a_hiking_trail/ Moonliner72 (talk) 18:07, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- You will still need a permission form the author (the child). Ruslik (talk) 20:41, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Or, more likely, their parent or guardian. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Though, according to this answer by Creative Commons, we do need permission from the child, at least in the United States. HyperAnd [talk] 05:59, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- The problem is, since the guy who took the photo doesn't know the kid, the author is unknown. So there's no way to get permission. I found this file: File:"Perigo!" (15461815780).jpg which might fall under the same thing. The photographer gave permission to use the photo, but the person who made the sign is unknown. Would it be allowed under US law, or is it different because it's in Brazil? Moonliner72 (talk) 18:10, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- This would not be allowed under any law. Ruslik (talk) 19:09, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

Astro photography
This sounds ridiculous but ... do we have (or would anyone object to) a Space photographs taken on 19xx-xx-xx category? Moon photographs taken on 19xx-xx-xx etc? Parent could be a subcategory of Photographs taken on xxxx as individual country ones are. No Swan So Fine (talk) 11:59, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- @No Swan So Fine, don't fall into the tarpit of COM:OVERCAT and the one with categories replacing descriptions, always think about re-users who might want to browse fitting categories. It's a pain in the bum to search through overly precise categories, and standard people searching for illustrations don't use Deepcat to display the contents of several categories at once. I don't think that it should go deeper than years fundamentally, only when the amount of files becomes too high (more than 50-100) for a year category, break it down to months, and only if a month gets over-filled, break it down to weeks or days. - On wikipedia some images which are non-free can be used out of the fact that theyre fair use, but only on wikipedia itself. This includes passports, and often logos. I'm not sure, but if there is no help here, you could ask there aswell. Tomas Guus (talk) 13:28, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Wiki.cowboy: Let me see if I can make that clearer. I'm assuming you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia, if not then the following may not be exactly correct.
- Under no circumstances does Commons allow non-free images. However, the English-language Wikipedia makes limited allowance for non-free content. See en:Wikipedia:Logos#Uploading non-free logos. - Jmabel ! talk 20:12, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
File wont update.
I've uploaded a new version of a file, but it wont update. It does show when just looking at the main file, but when downloading or clicking on it, it still shows the old file. I've done the same to my textless version, and there it has updated. Any ideas on why this happens or is it just a waiting game? Tomas Guus (talk) 13:25, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Tomas Guus: caching problem. There are a few places along the way that caching can occur. If it is on your own computer, you may be able to fix it just by refreshing the page or, for now, you may have to try a different browser or a different device. If it is on the server side, you can often solve it by adding "?action=purge" to the end of the URL (or, if there is already a query string in the URl, "&action=purge"). That will typically produce a page asking if you want to purge. You can try that on the file page and/or on the page where the file is used, either can separately be at issue. Doesn't always work (sometimes it's just a waiting game), but it works more often than not. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you (: Problem is fixed. Tomas Guus (talk) 21:10, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

The actual "entry point" for uploads is the Special:UploadWizard, please follow its guiding if you decide to immediately jump into uploading. It would be wise to pay close attention to the license choices (reference: COM:Licensing), a decent thing is to take the license {{CC-by-SA 4.0}}. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 04:08, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

- No, the copyright would belong to the photographer or someone they assigned it to. You could quite likely get them to offer a free license; COM:VRT probably tells you all you need on that front, though COM:THIRD is a broader discussion of uploading third-party content. Or you could take another picture yourself and upload that. - Jmabel ! talk 05:33, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

issues with account
Hello, I am an American Professor and I am trying to contact some of the authors of images in Wikimedia in order to get from them the authorization to include them properly in my new book. It seems that it is mandatory to create an account in order to proceed, so I tried but with no success. When I create a new username and password my IP is blocked and I cannot move forward.. Why? I am not in US right now and I am traveling so I have no control on the local wifi. Can you please help me to solve this issue? Or is there an alternative way to contacts the authors of specific images? Many thanks! best Maurizio ~2026-41351-89 (talk) 09:55, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
- Dear Maurizio, if the account creation does not end in a usable state for whatever reason at this moment, you can still use the user talk pages to leave a message. Mine for instance is at User talk:Grand-Duc, the pattern is uniformly: "User talk:INSERT USER NAME". Those pages are exactly for the purpose you're describing: contacting Wikimedians. Bear in mind that anybody can read messages posted there, though. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:55, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-41351-89: Have you also tried using quota/roaming to make an account yet? If that fails, you can try requesting an account by following the instructions at en:Wikipedia:Request an account. (Note that although the page linked above is for Wikipedia, you can use the same credentials to log into Wikimedia Commons after getting a Wikipedia account.) Hello, I really enjoy this piece of art by Gustave Moreau: File:Helen Moreau.jpg. Unfortunately, the upload on commons is not very high quality. I've found this image of fine-art print which appears to be accurate. Does this fall under the bit of COM:PD which states "Faithful reproductions of two-dimensional works of art, such as paintings, which are in the public domain [...] are accepted as public domain regardless of country of origin"? Furthermore, can I request to overwrite the original on COM:OWR, or should this be uploaded seperately? Thank you. Paccyd33 (talk) 09:46, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:2015 Registration and 2016 Inspection Sticker.jpg

--Heghway (talk) 22:46, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
I was unsure about if Texas still held the inspection sticker copyrights and I think it’s on public domain please help me.
—-Heghway (talk) 22:46, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- If, as indicated, the photo was taken by "Texas department of public safety and TXDOT" then it is certainly copyrighted and should be deleted. The copyright status of the stickers would not matter.
- The stickers may or may not be complex enough to copyright; they are pretty close to the U.S. threshold of originality for copyright. My guess is that they are just under (not copyrightable).
- "Still" in you question is confusing: U.S. copyrights for works since 1 March 1989 last a minimum of 70 years from creation (basically, the only way it's ever that short is that a known author dies the same year as the work was created), and it doesn't look like anything here is older than 1989. - Jmabel ! talk 02:55, 27 July 2026 (UTC)

i want to upload an image of a partially exposed lightning strike to post to the page for rolling shutter, but the best one that i have is a frame from a video that i took, which i would like to upload with file information, so that people would not take it down, is there a way to do it? thanks in advance! - @Pinkkw: Could you clarify what you mean by "with file information, so that people would not take it down"? In particular, what exactly do you mean by "file information" in this context? (Possibly, as against what: presumably you never upload a file with no information.) Also: is the video something you intend to post as well? Photo copyright: practical question
Hello,
I want to upload a photo on a page devoted to my father (fr:Nessim Sibony).
I am not the copyright holder. However, the photographer gave me permission. I understand Wikimedia needs his written consent. I wanted to use the email template but I can't find a box that fits my situation: I am NOT the Copyright holder OR his representative but I DO know the copyright holder. What do you recommend I do? Many thanks!

Captcha
Bonjour,

Creating maps
Can someone please point me in the right direction for learning how to create maps - for example for neighborhoods and historic districts of my city? Thanks. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:30, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

- Yes, thanks. I'm particularly interested in making maps of subdivisions of my city New Orleans, which can be divided in various ways, such as traditional neighborhoods (sometimes 19th or 18th century separate municipalities), numbered wards, City Planning Commission divisions etc - in addition there are multiple Federally designated Registered Historic Districts, sometimes with boundaries different from any of the previous. So maps showing such boundaries can be useful in multiple projects (here on Commmons for clarification, Wikipedia articles, perhaps Wikivoyage or other projects as well). As someone who grew up map literate in the pre-digital era, I'd know how to do that on paper easily - from an existing street map, draw lines showing the boundaries (eg, "these 3 streets and the Mississippi River form the boundaries of the Carrollton Historic District"). I've played around a bit on Open Street Maps but haven't figured out how to do the digital equivalent. I'd like to learn how to do something like that. I wish to upload the logo for a high school and am unsure the correct process to go about doing so
I am working on improving the wikipedia page for Jefferson Forest High School, and believe that it would be beneficial to add the school’s logo to the page. However, I am unsure if doing so would violate a policy or something else. How should I go about adding it to wikimedia and putting on the page? StrangeFrogCreature (talk) 20:08, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- Files uploaded here need to be useful for some educational purpose and appropriately licensed. Your logo would fit the former, but the latter is a bit trickier. The odds are, the logo is not freely-licensed and is also not so simple that it cannot be copyrighted. So if you're looking to improve a Wikipedia article, you can maybe upload it to that project directly: if you're writing in English, see w:en:Wikipedia:Images for details on the English-language Wikipedia's image policies. (I'm not a member of that community, so I just encourage you to check with them and if you have any questions, post them to w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE). ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:20, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

Account policy
I've recently had the thought that I'd like to upload a few photos I've taken to Wikimedia Commons, but I'd rather they not be tied to this account name as I've had this account since I was a kid and there are a lot of embarrassing edits from twenty years ago. As far as I can tell, sockpuppetry is permitted as long as you're not doing it for abusive reasons, but I wanted to check that this was something I could do before I break the rules. Editor510 (talk) 14:18, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Editor510: The simplest way would be to stop doing new work under this account and start a new, different account. (You could still use this one if responding to matters related to your old uploads, etc., just keep the new account out of those.) You could start a new account and continue to operate both accounts, but it is definitely harder to keep from involving both in the same matters than if you essentially drop the old one.
- In short, you are allowed to have two active accounts, but the more active they both are, the harder not to break rules. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. I don't think I've ever uploaded anything to Commons under this account name. I only use this account name for my Wikipedia edits. I'd want to create a separate account solely for uploading to Commons. -- Editor510 (talk) 08:27, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Editor510: please bear in mind that any account is usable for any Wikimedia project (it's the effect of the single-user login), so, even if you intend to have a "Wikipedia account" and a "Commons account", both will be usable on all projects anyway. It's upon you to avoid breaking sockpuppet rules on other projects (I think that EN may be rather strict, there). A possible solution could be to ask a friendly admin for a voluntary block on projects you do not intend to use e.g. your "Commons account", the reason of wanting to have separate accounts on projects you're engaged with may be enough. On DE-WP (my home Wiki), such a request for any kind of voluntary block (barring previous misconduct) is usually granted no questions asked, but that is only a local custom that is not assured to exist on other Wikipedias. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:42, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- But the problem with even a voluntary block is that there are several things you are barred from if you have an account blocked on any wiki, most notably use of The Wikipedia Library. - Jmabel ! talk 18:45, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- I have had this account for almost twenty years. I would not be as stupid as to get it banned by trying to circumvent rules with the alternate account, participate in edit warring, etc. It would be my intention solely to use it for uploading photographs to the Commons and nothing more. Editor510 (talk) 07:36, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- Imagine the following fictional example. You're logged in Commons to check and add files to your uploads. A third person edited a file description, including a link to e.g. the EN-WP. For whatever reason, curiosity is enough, you follow this link and are now on EN-WP with your Commons account. If you forget this fact in the heat of the moment and do some edits that you would usually do with your Wikipedia account, like participating in a discussion where you were involved previously with your main pseudonym, you've most likely already run afoul of the en:WP:SOCK policy, and that's without doing stuff like edit warring. The bare minimum would certainly be an overt and clear declaration of the relationship between these accounts, maybe even going as far as to write it directly into the account name ("Editor510 as file uploader" for instance, that should not be against prohibitions of impersonification as you're the legitimate name user). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:23, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

If I upload a picture that I have previously uploaded to another site, should I put the site as source?
I have been planning to upload some images that I have taken that I have previously uploaded to Inaturalist. However, I'm planning to upload higher resolution versions than Inaturalist has (as Inat limits image dimensions to 2048 pixels). Should I put corresponding Inaturalist observation as a source? Or if not, can or should I link to the observation some other way? Nyrkes (talk) 18:18, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Nyrkes: Thank you for contributing! I think since you are the photographer and you are uploading a higher resolution version than what is available on iNaturalist, you should put "own work" ({{Own}}) as the source. You can then link the photo to your iNaturalist observation using {{INaturalist}} (see example at File:Sympetrum obtrusum, Female 01.jpg). I also recommend you create your userpage and link/mention your iNaturalist profile, and likewise update your iNaturalist profile to link to your Wikimedia profile, to make it clear to others that you're the same person. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 19:04, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
Hello, inquiry about book cover uploadings
Hi! I am new to Wikipedia and trying to make a draft about a book. How can I upload a book cover into Wikimedia Commons so that I can add in Wikipedia draft? I only use it for the purpose of illustration for a wiki draft, therefore I will commit to Fair Use. ABookWormmm (talk) 03:38, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- @ABookWormmm: If you are using it on a fair use basis, then it is not allowed on Commons, nor in an English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) draft. Commons only allows "free" files, not fair use. en-wiki has that same policy for draft articles, but if your article is accepted, then you could upload the cover to en-wiki (not to Commons) under their policy on non-free content. See Inherent Vice and File:Inherent_vice_cover.jpg for a good example of doing that correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 04:01, 30 July 2026 (UTC)

- Thank you so much, Jmabel, for your response. First of all, let me explain. The contest I'm referring to is called https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2026. A few days ago, I uploaded several files to the gallery, which I believe I did successfully. However, when I went to the contest gallery, where all the entries should be published, mine didn't appear. That's why I'm asking. I've checked several links on the site, but nothing explains what happened. And when I try to re-upload one of these images to my profile, it says a copy is already there, so I can't upload the same image again. Please let me know if I've explained your answer clearly. Thank you very much. Alfredo Olivares Bueno (talk) 22:42, 30 July 2026 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 01:27, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

if an get an image off of getty images or an old published magazine am i able to use that or nah? Sonia Rozanova (talk) 23:04, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- Commons requires that all files must be 1.) of some educational value (which is very broadly construed and most images you could plausibly use for an educational purpose are fine) and 2.) either acceptably licensed or in the public domain. Note that the latter applies to both American law and also the law of wherever the work was created if that's not America. Most images from Getty will not meet criterion #2. Many images from magazines published before 1931 will (all material published before 1931 is in the public domain in the United States). Unfortunately, determining if something is in the public domain can be tricky. See the Hirtle chart at the beginning of Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States. - @Suryaram Vairakkannu: However, in terms of it being clear that the photos are really yours, uploading with accurate EXIF data is almost always a good idea. If you plan to edit a photo, I always recommend first uploading the version straight from the camera, then overwriting that with your preferred version. See File:Waterside Plaza and Con Ed East River Generating Station from the East River 01.jpg for an example where I did that just a few hours ago.
- (Also: I assume that by "raw files" you mean "JPEGs straight from a digital camera", not "RAW format"; Commons does not accept RAW files.) - Jmabel ! talk 01:46, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
Help recover account
message me for help now Andersonte (talk) 05:21, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Andersonte: Without knowing what account and whether you have any basis to show it used to be yours, it is very hard even to give you useful advice. I assume you have already tried the suggestions at meta:Help:Account recovery. - Jmabel ! talk 06:25, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
