Wiki Imagine Lagos Photograpy Contest is a photographic competition which is an integral part of the ongoing Wiki Imagine Lagos project to document tourist sites in Lagos State through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate and you are encouraged to submit any photos of the tourist sites on our topic list HERE between 2nd and 16th December, 2024. By submitting your photos to the competition, you help to digitally preserve Lagos State's heritage sites and share them with the rest of the world to enjoy through the internet.
The Wiki Imagine Lagos project is a project of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria (Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation) in collaboration with the Lagos State Government to digitally preserve the state's heritage sites, culture, festivals, and tourist attractions through various Wikimedia projects and events.

Find a tourist site on the topic list
We conducted a Needs Assessment to know the tourist sites in Lagos State. This list is not only limited to tourist sites but also hotels and restaurants in Lagos State as these are also key to tourism and hospitality in the state. Check the topic list here and please, stick to it.
Take photos
Make as many and as good photos as you can, try different angles. Even if the photo doesn't win you a prize, it may help Wikipedia!
Describe them
Write down what you photographed. Record the site's name, description, and date of photo.
Upload to Commons
Upload your images to Wikimedia Commons between 2nd and 16th December. Create an account, if you don't have one already.Contact us!

Why participate?
Participate in Wiki Imagine Lagos Photo Contest, the first photography competition of its kind, and help digitally preserve Lagos State's tourist sites on Wikipedia.
Participating is fun! By photographing and sharing images of heritage sites near you, you can explore more about Lagos heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve your photography skills, and you can, of course, win some nice prizes. You stand a chance to win amazing prizes. The jury will review the submitted photographs and select the ten best entries. The top three entries will receive photography gadget vouchers worth ₦500,000, ₦300,000, and ₦200,000, while the remaining seven will be awarded digital recognition certificates.
You can also upload images that you may have taken already during one of your exploration of Lagos State.
Competition rules
We try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:
- Self taken and self uploaded;
- Uploaded during December 2nd to 16th, 2024;
- During the upload process, you give permission with a CC BY-SA licenseto re-use the image;
- Contain a listed site on the topic list HERE,
Next to that, there are a few practical rules:
- Images should NOT be watermarked.
- You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
- If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
- You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the photo.
During the timeline of the contest, you may upload as many pictures (old or new) as you want of tourist sites in Lagos State. At the end of the contest, the jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures.
Prizes
1st: Photography Gadget voucher worth NGN500,000
2nd: Photography Gadget voucher worth NGN300,000
3rd: Photography Gadget voucher worth NGN200,000
N.B:You must upload at least 10 quality pictures to be eligible for any of these prizes.
The Jury
Our jury will process the images through two or three rounds after the contest. At the end of this process, the jury determines the top-10. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides.
Judging criteria
The jury will determine the winners of the contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):
- Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
- Originality;
- It MUST be part of the sites on the topic list
- Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.
Feel free to submit many images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.
