Category
Hi, I moved a couple of files on your request, but the last ones are more like 'making the category look better'. A category is not a set of files. If all the files belong together, as a set, it's something else. So, please be careful what you request, it can be declined. Regards and have a nice evening (morning/day/night) - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 21:19, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
I do not conform with your changes
When I wrote Tbc more than 10 years ago it was thought as a needed explanation. Now we have a lot of color explaining tools, as Legend and many others. Most can be used more comfortable, so the current transclusion count of 1K will sure not exceed too much. It will be good to have the choice either to declare a color as "red", or to set {{I18n/red}} instead, when translations seem useful. It is not a good idea to use always the i18n-version! Please undo it - or I will remove it.
Another thing are the redirects. I strongly oppose to foresee nationalized redirects for templates. By should not be transcluded by e.g. redirect templates as "von", "de", "del", "od", "fra", "ад", "কর্তৃক", "על ידי", "다음에 의함" etc ! And while most editors will immediately see that "i18n/red" is about the color red, "i18n/piros" or "I18n/červený" will not be as well understood. Please, delete all your color redirects !
BTW, thanx for your other good work -- sarang♥사랑 11:20, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- I would rather this be a discussion on the template talk page instead of just between the two of us. After all, it isn't just our opinions that matter. Let's see how everyone else feels and go with whichever option is most popular. OmegaFallon (talk) 11:45, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
- Well, I see you've undone it. I disagree personally. Commons is supposed to be as interlingual as possible. OmegaFallon (talk) 19:06, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

File:Bayes_theorem_assassin.svg
Thanks for updating File:Bayes_theorem_assassin.svg. Though I appreciate your change, there was a huge controversy several months ago, partially about whether the image violated copyright. Calling the characters "impostors" will likely stir up another round.
Additionally, the term "assassin" is more familiar to people not into Among Us. I also like that "A" is the initial of "Assassin", while "B" is that of "Being suspicious".
Cheers,
cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 13:21, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. I guess I'm just confused about the current ruling of using what are very clearly Among Us characters, but not using the actual term "impostor". I feel like we should either go all one way or the other, either have them be the crewmate bean designs with the word "impostor", or have them be generic spacemen with "assassin." Right now we're in a weird middle space. You can revert my edit if you wish. OmegaFallon (talk) 16:20, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- Many thanks for understanding, and no problem at all. I guess I'm treading close to the line of acceptability so don't want to push too far or the whole thing might be rejected. Nevertheless, because "assassin" is clearer to someone unfamiliar with Among Us than "impostor", I restore the old version if no one has any other comment on it. "Category:Cosplay of Kasumi"
I wonder if we should just use Kasumi instead? She seems to be the most famous character with this name Trade (talk) 10:51, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hard disagree. Kasumi is just a standard Japanese name. It'd be like having a category called "Cosplay of Greg" OmegaFallon (talk) 12:26, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Shrunk some images
Hi @OmegaFallon, I found three images you worked on recently:
and thought I could reduce their file sizes further. Hope they look OK at your end. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 06:17, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! They all look the same to me, which is good! OmegaFallon (talk) 12:31, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Category:"Te"_standing_for_tellurium has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Template:Country by year by topic
Just so you are aware, your template breaks every single category that was formerly in for example Category:Sri Lanka by year by topic by moving them to the non-existent Category:Sri Lanka by topic by year. Compare Category:Countries by year by topic with the non-existent categories for Category:Countries by topic by year. Please test your templates first before forcing them on every country and breaking bunches of categories. Ricky81682 (talk) 02:28, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I am aware, and this is not an error. The meta category was formatted incorrectly. It should be something like "1999 by topic by country", as "by country" is the sorting category. See COM:Meta category at the bottom. There are a lot of double metacategories which have incorrect categories filed into them because people get confused about this. I created {{Double MetaCat}} to help remedy the confusion. I hope you will understand that the error here is not on my part, it is on whoever set up these categories wrong to begin with. Thank you. OmegaFallon (talk) 02:33, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Then fix the categories if you think they are all broken. Or at least put a single edit summary somewhere that tells people what you are doing. Ricky81682 (talk) 02:38, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I do not "think" they are broken. Per the format laid out in COM:Meta category, they are broken. And I am fixing the categories, creating them and adding {{Dmc}} to them. I have not broken anything, I am in the process of tediously cleaning it up. You're welcome to help. OmegaFallon (talk) 02:41, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I'd check the template again. This change results in weird language like at Category:2016 in Russia by topic where it says "Russia by Template:I18n/topic by year". Please preview it with something before you make a change. It's a lot of countries that involve a lot of categories. It should probably be protected anyways. Ricky81682 (talk) 19:13, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- What language are you browsing with? I don't see any error on my end. OmegaFallon (talk) 19:15, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- English. It looks like you edit at Template:I18n/topic wasn't loading. One of the problems with templates that call templates upon templates. What is this now, four levels of templates involved in all this? Either way, I think it's working now. Ricky81682 (talk) 19:20, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I suppose it is a lot of levels. I did what made the most organizational sense to me, I apologize if the nesting isn't best practice. OmegaFallon (talk) 19:23, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I was here over a decade ago when the first fights about nesting templates came about. I'm still annoyed at the idea although it makes much more sense program-wise. I know we'll never go back lol. It's fine. You are probably right on all of this but it's a lot of tiny little fixes that need to be done. Ricky81682 (talk) 21:29, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Double meta categories
Hi, OmegaFallon. I noticed that created Template:Double MetaCat and have added it to categories. It's a cool idea, but I'd like to point something out.
To pick an example, one of the categories you added this to is Category:Mosaics by country by subject. That category is a meta category by subject, but not by country. That's because each of the subcategories is grouped by subject but not grouped by country. There are some categories that specify two parameters in the metacat template, but a lot of those should have only one. I've been trying to fix them when I find them.
Usually it's just the last item mentioned that makes something a metacategory, but sometimes the category is named wrong. The last parameter should be the one that varies. For example, looking at the subcats in Category:Mosaics by country by subject, you see that they all say "mosaics" and "country", and it's the subject that's different. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:45, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, and one other comment. Many categories that are for things by name aren't metacats at all. An example is Category:Actors by decade by name, which is not a metacat because the subcats don't group multiple things with the same name. Each subcat is for one individual person. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:48, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- No, I believe that is a double metacat. It is a metacat which contains other metacats and is sorted by two critera: decade and name, name being the one which varies. I don't see the problem here. OmegaFallon (talk) 02:52, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- OK, I guess I see that. I just noticed another thing, though: the double metacats all seem to be sorting at the top of Category:Meta categories, instead of sorting under their actual name. Can that be fixed? -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:11, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- No, I believe that is a double metacat. It is a metacat which contains other metacats and is sorted by two critera: decade and name, name being the one which varies. I don't see the problem here. OmegaFallon (talk) 02:52, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what the problem is. I have the template set up such that it clarifies that the final part of the title is what varies. As you said, some categories are named or filed into incorrectly, but that's what my template is seeking to help people avoid by clearing up the confusion. I am well aware of the proper way to categorize with DMCs and I'm failure sure my template is set up correctly in describing them. OmegaFallon (talk) 02:49, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
Template:AutoDMC
I started a discussion at Commons:Village_pump#Category_explosion_under_a_location_category regarding the 'by location' category structure being created by AutoDMC. Ricky81682 (talk) 20:45, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
