Category:Asterism (gemmology)

English: An asterism is an optical phenomenon of an enhanced reflective area in the shape of a "star" on the surface of a cabochon-cut stone. Some stones' stars are seen by light striking the front of the stone (epiasterism), while others (mainly rose quartz) can only be seen when the stone is held to the light (diasterism). The number of rays composing the star are usually either four or six in natural stones; up to 16 rays have been seen in treated and man-made material.
