There are several instances of copyright violations and/or unclear licenses in this work. The uploader stated "own work" as the source. However:
  • A reverse image search of the photos used in this work has indicated clear copyright infringement:
    • The top-left image was created by Shell (a reference to the company's name is even visible in the image collage). A BBC article from 2011 shows this 3D visualization, also attributing it to Shell.
    • The top-right image was used in this article from 2018, with Shell mentioned as the source.
    • The bottom-left image was published here before, where the Italian company "ENI" is stated as the image source.
  • A quick reverse image search of the bottom-right image was inconclusive.
  • The source and license of the map in the background is unclear.

The VRT pending tag is not necessary since there is already a Permission received tag. – Photographer's permission is okay and valid as far as the photo is concerned. But isn't there also a copyright of the museum on the exhibit? If so, a permission from the museum is needed as well. If not, the photo should be kept. --Mussklprozz (talk) 09:17, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
I have already provided the VRT team with my permission (Ticket #2026040910004218). Regarding the concern about the museum's copyright
The subject is SUE, which is a fossil specimen. Under US law, biological remains and prehistoric fossils are natural objects in the Public Domain. The mounting and scientific display of these remains don't meet the threshold of originality for a new copyright.
There are hundreds of images of this specific specimen already on Commons for this very reason please see Category:Sue (Tyrannosaurus specimen FMNH PR2081). Deleting this would set a problematic precedent for every other fossil photograph in the repository. As a professional creator and member of Wikimedia España, I affirm this is my original work and it's properly licensed.

  •  Weak delete This image (with the gradient) is used as a logo by many different things, including a Facebook page for "Grafixtor" (supposedly a digital agency), a roof cleaning service called "Godbey Clean", a youtube channel with no subscribers, and so on. The version without the gradient is currently being sold as a stock image on both iStock and VectorStock. I suspect that this discussion could come down to whether or not this image is below the threshold of originality; I'm inclined to believe this is slightly above, but I have no idea, and I don't know which jurisdiction this image was originally created in either. @Deletion Delayer: such a mindset is actually one of the worst things to show on Wikipedia and for Commons; it is detrimental to the integrity of the projects. The Wikimedia movement is built upon a few core principles, one of them, maybe the most important, is to gather en:free content and to respect the copyrights owned by third parties. See: COM:Licensing and COM:THIRD, the latter being a walkthrough about copyrights.
So, your argumentation is totally beside the point, you can't better anything, no Wikipedia article, no media repository, by willingly including copyright violations. You will actually do harm to those endeavours of building a repository of free knowledge.
It is also totally abstruse to say that a composition of actual macro image of actual living organisms is a montage of simple shapes. That notion of "simple shapes" stems from the concept of a COM:threshold of originality. As a rule of thumb, such a threshold is basically overcome by any purposefully made photographic image.
Feel free to repair the screw-up by the original uploader who indeed should have contacted the alleged copyright owners of this imagery and try to get an authorisation (see again: COM:THIRD). But for the integrity of Commons, as it stands now, this composition most likely needs to get deleted. If, by happenstance, an authorisation arrives later on, it can be restored. First of all, thank you for taking the time to review the permission. I am the person who uploaded this map to Commons. I work at Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University and I sent the permission today. These German maps have been part of the university’s geographical collections for decades (at least since the 1950s), and we displayed some of them in an exhibition in 2024 (Teaching Maps). The maps are the property of the university, which has been following an open content policy recently, sharing the images under the Licence Ouverte Etalab 2.0. We consider these maps to be also in the public domain from a copyright perspective because they were produced by a German mapping service (unidentified, likely military) in the 1930s, using geographical data that was partly French. No specific author is identified, so as with other old documents (like many postcards avalaible on Commons), we consider that these maps were published more than 70 years ago and are therefore freely shareable.
Since this heritage map scan is belonging to Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University, we shared it on Wikimedia Commons under the Licence Ouverte Etalab 2.0, in accordance with our new open content policy.
We are currently in the process of applying for the Label Culture Libre, and promoting these German maps through Wikimedia Commons is important to us as evidence of the widespread sharing of a rare geographical heritage that had previously remained restricted only to some researchers. It would be unfortunate if this map from the 1930s were removed from Commons, especially since we believe it can be shared without any issues regarding copyright or reuse.
Finally, I should point out that when I uploaded this map to Commons, I made a mistake and checked the wrong box : I should have checked "Cette photo ou vidéo n'est pas protégée par le droit d'auteur".   • Comment assuming COM:Germany or COM:France applies (both are very similar), this is likely public domain under {{PD-anon-70-EU}} if the author is truly unknown (since the work seems to be from the early 20th century, though I can't see any evidence of a publication date anywhere in the image itself, so I'm just going based off the file title).     The map contains several dates :
    - "Ausgabe 1928" (at the bottom, under the geographical scale")
    - "Nadelabweichung für Mitte 1936" (at the bottom, right)
    - "11. 39" (vertically, next to the lower-right corner of the map). This is likely the publication/divulgation date (1939), as many map publishers indicated the publication date (month and year) in this way, vertically in the lower right corner.
    For more context, one German map from this serie (Modane) is described in our "Teaching maps" exhibition catalogue (p. 26-27) :
    - "Plusieurs cartes utilisées pour les travaux pratiques après la guerre sont des éditions allemandes militaires (Sonderausgabe - Nur für den Dienstgebrauch) de cartes françaises des années 1930, récupérées après la guerre pour la pédagogie." (in english : Many of the maps used for practical exercises after the war were German military editions (Sonderausgabe - Nur für den Dienstgebrauch) of French maps from the 1930s, which were acquired after the war for educational purposes)
    - "Carte allemande basée sur le modèle des cartes françaises de la frontière allemande faite à l'échelle 1 : 50 000e. On remarque l’avertissement « Sonderausgabe - Nur für den Dienstgebrauch » ou « Édition spéciale - Réservé au service » et aussi le tampon de la « Faculté de Lettres – Institut de Géographie », où plus de 70 exemplaires de cette même carte ont été trouvés. Я боюсь, если автор неизвестен, эта фотография не может быть размещена под свободной лицензией ни на Викискладе, ни в Русской Википедии. Согласно действующему российскому законодательству (и американскому тоже), если фотография опубликована без указания авторства, то она всё равно защищена авторским правом 70 лет. Причём срок отсчитывается с момента первого опубликования, а не с момента, когда оно сделано. Вдруг автор станет известен и его авторские права должны быть защищены. Вы являетесь законным правообладателем этой фотографии, тут вопросов нет, и можете распоряжаться ею как угодно как вещью, но авторские права на данное фото всё равно принадлежат безвестному человеку, который сделал это фото в 1990-х годах или его возможным наследникам. This image is clearly not a selfie, and the user (who is personally known to the person reporting this) can be seen in the back of the room in the picture; therefore, he cannot simultaneously be the photographer, and thus the copyright holder.
