Dear January I asked the owner the file File:Dr. ghasemi.jpg (File:Dr_ghassemi_bank_pasargad.jpg)to send a permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and they sent the confirmation based on wiki-commons' template as follows:
"I hereby affirm that Bank Pasargad Public Relations is the sole owner of the exclusive copyright of

Copyright permission for use of image photograph File:BJCroome UCT 100yrs 2014.jpg loaded by AztarPress for use in Wikipedia media
Dear January, this is just to acknowledge that I have actioned your request for copyright permission for use of the above image in the wikipedia commons media. I have sent copies of the email correspondence between me in my personal capacity (Judy Croome, to my private email) and Prof Jennifer Roeleveld, Head: Taxation, Department of Finance and Tax University of Cape Town and a conference organiser, in which she grants me permission to use this photograph for Wikipedia (and other on-line sites such as Goodreads) to the permissions email address you provided. I have copied Prof Roeleveld with this email for her records. Should you require more copyright permission than this email permission to use the photograph on Wikipedia, please note that I will only be able to obtain that after the required 7 days as currently the university is closed for the annual December vacation and will only re-open on 16 February 2015.
Thank you for your assistance in ensuring Wikipedia's entries remain of a high editorial standard. Regards Aztar Press (Aztar Press (talk) 05:42, 27 December 2014 (UTC))
- @Aztar Press: From what you've told me I don't think the e-mail you've sent will be sufficient; we require the image to be licensed in a way that allows anyone to use the material for any purpose, including commercial use and modification (see COM:L#Acceptable licenses), and your comment suggests the permission is for online media only. If the image is deleted however it can later be restored if the correct permission is received, we generally recommend using the suggested wording in COM:ET. Separately, I have left you a note on English Wikipedia about your username. January (talk) 10:10, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
Hello again January, I've just had notification that the image File:BJCroome UCT 100yrs 2014.jpg has been deleted from Wiki and only saw your comment now, while searching for a reason/way to request undelete. From what you say here there's nothing I can do about getting the correct permission (as per suggested wording) from Professor Roeleveld until after 16 February 2015 when the University of Cape Town opens after the Christmas vacation. After that date, I'll reload the image (with the correct copyright permission). Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Best wishes, Judy Croome (JudyCroome (talk) 04:32, 3 January 2015 (UTC))
Copyright
Dear January, why did you delete my picture? I'm the autor, what shall I do to prove it? Thank you and kind regards.
- @Dzoasis: The photo had been previously published at , the caption specifies that it is copyrighted, and also appears in various other places such as in this journal (page 2) where it is credited "New Press". How did it come to be previously published in these places? January (talk) 09:02, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for you response. You know that if a picture is published once in the web it will circulate later. So if I understand, even if I'm the autor of a pîcture, I have to publish it the first time on Wikimedia so you will accept it?
- If the image is previously published we need evidence that the uploader is the photographer, otherwise we have no way of knowing whether it is actually theirs or whether it was downloaded it from one of the websites which have already published it and uploaded here (which happens very frequently here on Commons). Your upload was a low resolution image with no metadata, usually the photographer would have the original photo with metadata from the camera it was taken with. January (talk) 16:17, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ok I understood, I will take note while uploading a new picture again. Thank you

Sunglass Hut logo
Hi January, I was wondering if you could help figure out why my picture was disapproved. It was disapproved by a bot but I thought you could provide a human voice to help explain! I tried to upload a file named Sunglasshutnew.jpg which is the latest version of the Sunglass Hut logo. The image was removed for possible copyright violation. However, I noticed that the latest Ray-Ban logo was accepted for this reason: "this image, or text depicted in it, only consists of simple geometric shapes and text. They do not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and are therefore public domain. " Does the Sunglass Hut logo not fit the same guidelines? Also, I uploaded from the logo Wiki, would you recommend sourcing directly from the Sunglass Hut website instead? Thanks for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scott.leighton88 (talk • contribs)
- The file was deleted because it was uploaded with no licensing tag, but looking at the deleted file I agree it would qualify for the same licensing as the Ray-Ban logo ({{PD-textlogo}}). I've asked the deleting administrator here whether he would object to it being restored on that basis. Regarding the source, I don't think it makes any difference whether the logo is obtained from the company's website or another site. January (talk) 17:15, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
- That's great. Thank you very much, I'll continue to monitor it. Scott.leighton88 (talk)

Hi January, the picture I uploaded of Rod Cedaro competing on his page falls under a Creative Commons License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ It has not been done for commercial gain - non commerical, it credits the photographer, it has not been remixed or changed. The photographer explicitly explains this right next to the photo. Please amend and explain. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kelmoo (talk • contribs) 20:56, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Kelmoo: Sorry but Wikimedia Commons only accepts images which can be freely used and modified for any purpose including commercial use, so we can't accept images under Creative Commons licences that have the non-commercial or no-derivatives condition. Please see COM:L#Acceptable licenses for more information, and for an explanation of why we have this policy. January (talk) 21:24, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I will possibly see if I can get explicit permission from the photographer via email. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kelmoo (talk • contribs) 21:57, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Coster, NPG
Hello,
Did you ever find an answer to the second question you asked there in 2014? The question was: "Also for File:Philip Noel-Baker 1942.jpg by Howard Coster, does the source's statement "Transferred from Central Office of Information, 1974" support the PD-UKGov tag?" I see that someone has uploaded today another file in the same situation: File:Arnold Frederic Wilkins.jpg -- Asclepias (talk) 21:35, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- No, unfortunately I didn't ever get an answer to that. I didn't take it any further at the time. January (talk) 22:16, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks. I see that File:GylesIsham12thBt2.jpg and File:Serveimage.jpg are also tagged with the same statement on the NPG pages (Isham Anand) and that could provide a clue to answer our question. The photographs are from the 1930s, even before the existence of the the M of I, predecessor of the COI. They could not have been created for that organisation. That indicates that photographs in the COI collection were collected from different sources and that the statement "transferred from COI" can not be taken automatically as meaning that they were created for the government. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:00, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Do you think I could upload this photo with the template PD-US-1978-89. Progenie (talk) 17:11, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
- I can see two problems with this. Firstly according to the seller it was obtained from the archives of a newspaper, so even though that copy of the photo has no copyright notice, if the newspaper that published it had a copyright notice (which is quite likely) it may be covered by that copyright notice. Secondly even if you could prove it was published without a copyright notice you would also need to prove that it was not registered with the copyright office within five years to satisfy the second condition of the template. Hello January, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Commons Conference project
Hello
I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.
Cheers,
