First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Overcategorization

Please check my edits to your picture ‚沖繩都市單軌電車的博愛座標示貼紙 202408 DSC0030 by Junyu-K.jpg‘. Remember: when you label your file as being of category A, and A is member of category B, then you should Not Label your file with B, as this is already done by labeling it A. Otherwise you should catergory the position of a simple stone as: Okinawa+Japan+Asia+earth+Solar System+MilkyWay+Local Supergroup+ …. You see my point? PtrQs (talk) 17:35, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Category:Stick is considered to fulfill the criteria for speedy deletion and has been marked on its page. The following reason has been specified:

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

English · español · français

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with either:

{{SD|C2}} ("unuseful empty category") if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available

{{SD|C1}} ("improperly named category") if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused (e.g. typos).

"C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion. You could also use the following:

{{badname|current category name}}

{{speedy|empty, misspelled category name}}

The above templates (SD, speedy, Badname) expand to full speedy deletion requests.

In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page. Blanked categories end up on Special:UncategorizedCategories, which is largely handled by non-admins who cannot delete the categories in question.

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

Here are your top three winning images:

First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area.

Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
