Combining double see also cat
{{Birthcat}} adds two lines of {{See also cat}} if both cat <year> deaths and cat <year> animal births exists. Please combine them so that if both categories exist, only one line of cat see alsos is shown as is standardized common practice. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:50, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
- Done, I have combined them. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 04:18, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you! However, it seems like it still shows the animal deaths cat even when it's a redlink – see Category:1 births – and both redlinks when both don't exist – see Category:3 births. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:55, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Both of those categories you linked doesn't use the {{Birthcat}} template. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 13:15, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oh you're right; didn't check because it looked like it had the template and all the other cats in the series have it. So the first 10 years starting from 0 (0-9) don't have this template – that may be a common issue of templates for by-year-cat-series. Strangely, it seems like there are just two categories for births by year before year 0 – Category:173 BC births and Category:179 BC births. I'll check if births-year cat is autoset via the Wikidata infobox but then even if it is, the redcats for BC/BCE cats wouldn't get created. Thanks again for solving the first request!

This section is resolved and can be archived. If you disagree, replace this template with your comment. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:28, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

A template for cat Vaccinations by country
Could somebody please create a template for Category:Vaccinations by country that puts the category into (example for Category:Vaccinations in China) into Category:Vaccinations by country, Category:Public health in China and Category:Healthcare in China?
It would probably good to have subcategories, also with a template, for statistical graphics (data graphics) and note that many or most of these cats currently may miss a lot of files that are located in other categories like Category:Our World in Data graphics about healthcare systems. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:44, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- I have created {{VaccinationNav}}. I have already changed some of the categories to use the new template, feel free to change the remaining categories. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 21:26, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Amazing, thank you very much! I just changed the remaining categories but it's been hassle: asked if there was a way to bulk-edit many categories' contents similar to VisualFileChange here. Just one more thing before this is fully solved: could you make it so that e.g. Category:Vaccinations in Turkey displays both the countries of Asia and the countries of Europe navbar? New template: European road signs navbox
Hello,
Would it be possible to create a new template to allow for easier navigation of the various "Comparison of European road signs" gallery pages? What I had in mind was that it would follow the same format as the Template:Countries of Europe template, and similarly be placed at the top of each page, rather than needing to scroll down to the See also section. The following are the gallery pages in question:
Built-up area limits - Checkpoint - De-restriction - Mandatory - Priority - Prohibitory - Special regulations - Warning
I would appreciate any input regarding this. Thanks EthanL13[please ping me] 15:46, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- @EthanL13 I have created {{European road signs navbox}} per your description above. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 02:31, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- That's great, thanks very much! EthanL13[please ping me] 09:20, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
Making Template:Search link work with MediaSearch
Could somebody edit {{Search link}} so it can use MediaSearch instead of only SpecialSearch?
When using this template like so: -intitle:/LL\-Q/ -Pronunciation -deepcategory:"Tamil pronunciation" -deepcategory:"Dutch pronunciation" -deepcategory:"English pronunciation" filetype:audio it links to the SpecialSearch but I'd like to have it link to the better more intuitive and modern MediaSearch.
A parameter for the content-type (images, audio, video, other media, categories+pages) would also be great and maybe needed for enabling using it with MediaSearch.
Lastly, it would be best if specifying the sort order was possible when using this template rather than a normal full-url link. It doesn't seem to be possible currently and this page does not have any info on a search operator for the sort order and neither does Help:Searching (which btw is a page that where this template is used).
In the above example, the end-result would be a link to the audio tab of the MediaSearch that shows most recent audio uploads (sorted by recency) excluding some types of common audio files (pronunciation audios) that don't really need checking and categorizing. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:26, 9 November 2025 (UTC)
- I have added some additional parameters to {{Search link}} to enable the searches you described above. See below the table from the template documentation.
- So, using your example, you can do
{{search link|-intitle:/LL\-Q/ -Pronunciation -deepcategory:"Tamil pronunciation" -deepcategory:"Dutch pronunciation" -deepcategory:"English pronunciation" filetype:audio|method=MediaSearch|type=audio|sort=recency}}to get this -intitle:/LL\-Q/ -Pronunciation -deepcategory:"Tamil pronunciation" -deepcategory:"Dutch pronunciation" -deepcategory:"English pronunciation" filetype:audio. - Please let me know if there's any improvements needed. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 02:28, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Wow, that's amazing – thanks!! Didn't think anybody here would be able to implement this any time soon, especially not this quickly. I couldn't find any issues with it, great to see this solved. Will replace the uses I had in mind when I was looking for this functionality but one may want to check whether any further uses would benefit from using these new parameters (the template is used 418 times; I'll check some but not most of them). Prototyperspective (talk) 01:37, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- Additional parameters
Here are some additional template parameters for {{Search link}}.
| Parameter | Description | Options |
|---|---|---|
|method= |
Search interface used for searching, Special:Search or Special:MediaSearch | Search (default), MediaSearch |
|type= |
For Special:MediaSearch only, specify the content-type tab to display | image (default), audio, video, other, page |
|sort= |
Sort order for the search results | For Special:Search: relevance (default), edit date, creation date |
| For Special:MediaSearch: relevance (default), recency |
Bodycam and dashcam template
Could someone create these two templates with the text from Category:Dashcam related deletion requests/pending, Category:Body camera related deletion requests/pending, Category:CCTV related deletion requests and Category:Mug shots related deletion requests
The goal is to discourage users from using {{PD-automated}} when more appropriate templates are already available. The templates themself should look similar to {{Template:PD-USGov-DOJ}} with the image to the right either being a image or a icon that illustrates the subject--Trade (talk) 02:47, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
Comment, I don't understand the purpose of the templates, are these suppose to be copyright tags? If the purpose of these templates is to encourage users to use other more specific {{PD-USGov}} templates instead, what is the purpose of adding these templates to a file when they can just add that specific license to the file instead? Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 03:32, 19 November 2025 (UTC)- I don't understand the requests as well: is this meant to be for user talk pages to notify them that other templates are available and should be used or how are these intended to be used? Prototyperspective (talk) 14:38, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
- They are meant to be used on files to inform the uploader when the PD-automated is inappropriate and does not apply. It's also helpful to the reader and any future reusers because it informs them that the stated license might be invalid Trade (talk) 20:26, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
- I see, so you mean these are supposed to be problem tags, similar to {{Wrong license}}?
- I can help create this, but I think it makes more sense to create just one overall template (e.g. {{US-automated}}), since the message related to the US for bodycam and dashcam appears to be overall the same. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 00:44, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- There is a decent change that the Commons community will stop allowing dashcam files to use the PD-automated template. It's better to keep them seperate for the sake of future proofing Trade (talk) 15:46, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- I reverted your edit in the text about the mugshots or the files outside of the US, since I don't think it is part of the scope of this template. Unless you would like to widen the scope to those as well? Tvpuppy (talk) 15:56, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
- Also, I have created the template, you can add parameters to specify the footage type and reason. See example at {{US-automated}}. Tvpuppy (talk) 16:27, 21 November 2025 (UTC)

Knoxville, Tennessee by year template
I'd like to request a version of Template:Memphis, Tennesseeyear for Knoxville, Tennessee. ElToAn123 (talk) 04:46, 22 November 2025 (UTC)

{{optimized}} template
The template's goal is to tag images that have been losslessly optimized with tools such as OptiPNG. This is to signify that the image has been optimized and there is little reason to try optimizing it again. The template could be put into "other fields" tab of the image to not waste too much space. Files with this template should automatically be put in the category "Optimized files". Dabmasterars [EN/RU] (talk/uploads) 19:37, 22 November 2025 (UTC)
- Why would this info be so important to show to the user in the file information template instead of just the file revision history further down? Prototyperspective (talk) 21:56, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Images may be uploaded with optimization already applied (I do that, for example). Dabmasterars [EN/RU] (talk/uploads) 09:25, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- The nearly same question can be asked there: why would this be important / good to show to readers? It's not shown how many layers a png file has or the level of compression of jpg files for example. I think this would just bloat up the Information template to make it less readable, and less understandable without any clear benefit. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:56, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- Images may be uploaded with optimization already applied (I do that, for example). Dabmasterars [EN/RU] (talk/uploads) 09:25, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- I somewhat agree with Prototyperspective, I don't really see how useful this template will be, but I don't do optimization work, so perhaps there are others that will find it useful. Anyways, I still created {{Optimized}}, please feel free to change it (or just let me know) if anything needs to be changed. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 20:37, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
Florida memory – Attribution-FLGov-PhotoColl should contain image number
Can Template:Attribution-FLGov-PhotoColl be modified to contain the image number, we do that with the Library of Congress template. --RAN (talk) 18:41, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
Comment The problem for this is the link (URL) to the source image does not contain the image number, so having the image number in the template will not create a link like the ones in the LOC templates (e.g. {{LOC-image}}).- Alternatively, it is possible to include the source image link to the template, but I don't see how that will be useful since it will probably be redundant. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 22:41, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- If there's no objections, this may be best to archive as not done (impossible and/or not useful), is it? Prototyperspective (talk) 14:54, 11 November 2025 (UTC)

File has category beneath the Information box
Why does File:A Farewell to Arms (1932 film).ogg have a category underneath the Information template? Other files with the same file description template don't have that. Maybe the template used there or the template that this template uses needs an edit. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:01, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- The error was because of the template used in the file was missing the required "title" parameter, which I have now fixed. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 21:13, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! Do you maybe know of a way to find other cases with the template missing the title? Maybe for such cases a hidden maintenance category could be set or one could find them using a search like
insource="|title=newline"(I don't know if it's possible to search for a newline like that). Prototyperspective (talk) 21:40, 26 November 2025 (UTC)- I added some hidden maintenance categories to {{Spoken article}}, please see Category:Spoken article recordings missing title and Category:Spoken article recordings missing date for files with template problems. - Wow, that's 285 files. One could copy the year from the categories into the date box as all of the files are in a subcategory of Category:Spoken Wikipedia by year (categorized them into these new cats recently). I also used these categories to set the recording date (P10135) of the audios in Wikidata (note that all of them are set on Wikidata but an estimated >80% of the Spoken English Wikipedia ones). Great Britain
Can we take Great Britain off the Magazines of the UK by year after 1800? Rathfelder (talk) 15:22, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Rathfelder Done, I have corrected {{Magazines of country by year navbox}}. Apologies as it appears to be a coding error on my part when I created the template back in March, and the Great Britain category was inadvertently added to those UK magazine categories. Thanks. Simple derivatives of public domain works that fall under TOO
Similar to Template:MOTHER series, but more universal. Example images applicable to this include the aforementioned Mother logo and the album cover for the Moby single Porcelain. Dabmasterars [EN/RU] (talk/uploads) 21:32, 28 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Dabmasterars, I created {{PD-derivative}}, which basically allows you to specify a PD license tag for the original work, and another PD license tag for the derivative work. See example at File:Mother series logo.png.
- I think the template is quite universal, since you can use this for "simple derivatives of public domain works that fall under TOO", and even for other cases as well. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 03:10, 30 November 2025 (UTC)
Edit documentation of template:Move other

I can't find Gallery in {{TemplateBox}}, it is called Main. Can you make the documentations easier to understand? --Henrydat (talk) 17:32, 3 December 2025 (UTC)
- Gallery and Main are referring to the same namespace. Although the documentation in {{TemplateBox}} didn't specifically stated it, you can use the word Gallery in the
namespaceparameter. - I think you were trying to say you want to change the sentence in the {{Move other}} documentation, where it says "
The template is intended to be used in the following namespaces: all namespaces
". Unfortunately, the {{TemplateBox}} template only offers the options seen in its documentation (either all, talk, contents or a specific namespace), which means it is unable to specify multiple namespaces that the template can be used. - So, we can either remove the sentence, or just keep it as it is. Still, I have added an explanation in the template description that it should not be used for files and categories.

Make template Shortcut show again
The {{Shortcut}} box isn't showing on any of the pages it's being used. Could somebody please fix this? First asked about this here. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:33, 2 November 2025 (UTC)
Comment I think {{Shortcut2}} is the correct template to use if you want to display the box. Tvpuppy (talk) 03:52, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Why would the shortcuts be intentionally not shown? What would be the reason or benefit of adding that template when it's not shown to the reader? Even if it was intentional, I think it should be shown but as of now and given that nobody said so in the linked prior thread, I doubt this is the case. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:47, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Moreover, in the documentation of the template it says
This template shows the shortcuts of the current page.
and at the bottom it has a table with a column "input" where there is the template and a column "result" where it does display something. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:49, 3 November 2025 (UTC) - Per this edit in 2009, it appears this was designed to display without a box. Also, the template does display the shortcut links in mobile view. Not sure why it isn't displaying the links in desktop view. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 13:24, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, things are clear now; I thought emphasis was on "display", not on "the box". The request is about displaying it anyhow (on desktop too if it does display on mobile). Prototyperspective (talk) 13:30, 3 November 2025 (UTC)
- I thought it was weird that a 21-year-old template only displays correctly for mobile view. So, I checked and this template does display the links with Vector legacy 2010 (old skin), but it isn't displaying for Vector 2022 (new skin). So, I think this needs to be updated, but I'm not sure how. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 13:40, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

- @Prototyperspective and Tvpuppy: should we just make {{Shortcut}} the same as {{Shortcut2}}, or redirect one to the other? --Jarekt (talk) 23:12, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- To me that sounds like a good solution but they do look quite different Shortcut2 produces a box while Shortcut produces a few wikilinks next to each other (no box) for the top of the page. However, since Shortcut2 is better to see/notice and people are familiar with it, I think Shortcut2 would be better anyway. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:46, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Honestly, I don't know. Both template display shortcuts, and their difference is {{Shortcut}} displays them inline and {{Shortcut2}} display them in a box. Not sure which style other users prefer to display them in, but both templates are almost equally in-use (Shortcut: 6740 transclusions, Shortcut2: 6202 transclusions).
- So, in my opinion, we can keep both if there is a way to fix the {{Shortcut}} template. I have asked for VP/T for help to fix this (Commons:Village pump/Technical#Help fixing {{Shortcut}}). However, if it cannot be fixed, then I think we should consider replacing {{Shortcut}} like you have mentioned. Thanks.

About Template:FoP-China and Template:De minimis
Could the technical staff add "|author1=|author2=" to the {{FoP-China}}, similar to the "|deathyear=" in {{PD-Art}} ?
And could the technical staff add translation functions for Chinese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, German, French, Korean, Russian, etc., at the bottom of the {{De minimis}}, similar to the {{FoP-China}} template? Huangdan2060 (talk) 15:04, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
Question to @Huangdan2060, certainly we can add |author1=|author2=parameters to {{FoP-China}}, but it wasn't clear what you want these two parameters to do. Do you want the template to display the author names indicated in these parameters?- Also, for {{De minimis}}, the template actually used to have the "translation functions" at the bottom of the template, but it was removed in 2017 in this edit with the reasoning of "
deprecated i18n method
". I'm not sure why it was removed, but perhaps @FDMS4 (the user who removed it) can explain it before we decide to add it back. Thanks.
- Tvpuppy (talk) 08:44, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
- The legal provision states: "if the author and the name of the original work is attributed." In fact, very few Chinese 3D sculptures in the "author" field of the "Summary" include attribution. Add the "|author1=|author2=" parameters to the {{FoP-China}} template to attribute the author, similar to "|deathyear=" in {{PD-Art}}. Huangdan2060 (talk) 08:52, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Huangdan2060 Thanks for the reply, I now understand this better. In that case, do you think the template should also include a parameter for the name of the 3D artwork, e.g.
|name=? Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 11:40, 13 February 2026 (UTC)- I think adding parameters like "|author1=|author2=|sculpture name=" highlights the sculptor and the name of the sculpture, which is more aligned with copyright protection. Because in the "Summary", the "author" field is rarely filled with the sculptor's name, it's often filled with the uploader's name instead. Huangdan2060 (talk) 02:40, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

You can see examples at the documentation page or here: File:七彩穿山龍 (14034673843).jpg. Feel free to let me know if there is any changes needed. Thanks and 新年快樂! - I think adding parameters like "|author1=|author2=|sculpture name=" highlights the sculptor and the name of the sculpture, which is more aligned with copyright protection. Because in the "Summary", the "author" field is rarely filled with the sculptor's name, it's often filled with the uploader's name instead. Huangdan2060 (talk) 02:40, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Huangdan2060 Thanks for the reply, I now understand this better. In that case, do you think the template should also include a parameter for the name of the 3D artwork, e.g.
Setting maintenance category depending on template parameter
incategory:"Categories with deepcategory search box" video shows video-specific categories with the category-searchbox. I need to change these to all open the video tab by default like so: {{Search inside category|searchtype=video}}.
Is it possible for the template to set a different category depending on whether searchtype=video is set, e.g. 'Categories with video deepcategory search box' and the same for audio? I have already changed some of these and setting a different cat would make it easier to adjust the searchtype (also for when the template gets added without it to a filetype-specific cat in the future). There may be some other templates that already set categories depending on a parameter. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:19, 19 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective I think I understand the request, but I just wanted to make sure. You want to change {{Search inside category}}, so that instead of setting the default category of Category:Categories with deepcategory search box, you want the template to set the category according to the parameter
|searchtype=if the parameter is specified (e.g. into Category:Categories with video deepcategory search box). Is my understanding correct? Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 12:23, 20 February 2026 (UTC)- Yes, exactly. Prototyperspective (talk) 12:27, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- I have added the feature, but currently the categories (e.g. Category:Categories with video deepcategory search box) appears empty. Not sure if it is actually empty or it's just waiting for the cache to update. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 13:00, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Actually I can see the categories are now starting to get populated, so I think the cache is slowly getting updated. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 13:05, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- Nice, thank you!! I'll check in a few days if this is solved. Prototyperspective (talk) 13:07, 20 February 2026 (UTC)
- It doesn't yet show all categories – maybe longer waiting is required. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:06, 22 February 2026 (UTC)

- Solved now, thanks! I now need to replace add the template parameter to lots of remaining categories so I asked at Commons:Village pump/Technical#Editing many categories at once. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:14, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
Charts by country cats missing in Statistics by country cats
Could somebody create a template for Category:Charts by country country subcats to put these into Category:Statistics by country country subcats where they currently are mostly missing and then also add that template to all of these pages (exhausting to do this manually; I think wAWB/JWB/AWB can be used for that)? The template would have the navbar and set the categories. This would also allow maybe latter changing it to Category:Data graphics by country if such a subcat of the statistics cat exists. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:11, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective I have created {{Charts of country}} and added it to all the country subcategories. The template current categorizes into
Category:Statistics of <country>andCategory:Information graphics of <country>. - However, if
Category:Data graphics of <country>exists, then it will use this instead of the other two categories. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 19:03, 26 March 2026 (UTC) - Amazing, thanks a lot! Prototyperspective (talk) 23:03, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
