International Standard Contents Code

I see the bot is very busy adding ISCC hashes to photos. Presumably this is a good idea, but has an explanation been posted about what it is good for? Jim.henderson (talk) 22:06, 22 March 2026 (UTC)

pretty much the same question I had. - Jmabel ! talk 22:47, 22 March 2026 (UTC)
I'd be happy to write more about it, but I don't know where it would fit. Any suggestions? The property page itself and the preceding property proposal obviously have information which I imagined would justify the property being used, but I guess you already read those and deemed it not being enough. There are ideas for practical (future) usage on m:CommonsDB/Potential for the communities. Ainali (talk) 07:11, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
What I'd want is an explanation of what it is useful for, to whom, and also the breadth of when it is to be applied or not, plus whether it should have different qualifiers in different circumstances. Commons:ISCC or Commons:ISCC hashes would be appropriate page names for the documentation.- Jmabel ! talk 16:56, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Do we have pages like that for all other Structured Data properties, or what makes this one so special that it makes you want a specific page on Commons? Ainali (talk) 17:36, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
I find most of them pretty obvious. I do not find this one obvious. - Jmabel ! talk 20:11, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
I am sorry to hear that, it is perhaps too obvious to me. In my view, the answer to most of what you wanted an explanation for is covered by the property page itself and the property proposal. I'd be happy to help adding content to a page on Commons later. On that note though, perhaps it should be somewhere on a subpage under Commons:Structured data/Modeling rather on the top-level? Ainali (talk) 20:37, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
Possibly. All I know is that five minutes of follow-up from the links that you provided above still left me more or less as much in the dark about who uses this and for what as I was when I started. I assume five minutes ought to be more than plenty to get one's head around this if it were well explained. - Jmabel ! talk 00:03, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Just to be clear: none of my confusion is about what a hash is (and for those who don't know that, the only documentation needed for that is a simple link to en-wiki). I'm a 40-year computer professional. The question is what this particular hash is used for. - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Should this discussion perhaps be restarted on a subpage of Commons:Structured data and perhaps the people who proposed and voted for the property be pinged in there? (Or perhaps even on the property talk page?) To me, this seems like an odd place to have it. Ainali (talk) 07:38, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Feel free to move the discussion anywhere; please ping me there so I can add the relevant page to my watchlist. I just presumed that as the person who was adding this to my uploads, you could probably explain why it was useful. - Jmabel ! talk 03:50, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
And I just saw something I'd missed in your comments above. You are saying that the things discussed on m:CommonsDB/Potential for the communities can be done with this hash. Since nothing on that page mentions this hash, that was not immediately obvious to me. - Jmabel ! talk 03:58, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
I'm sorry again. I thought it was obvious since I was linking to it as a reply to your question in this discussion. That page is also just a subpage, ISCC is mentioned on the page above: m:CommonsDB. Ainali (talk) 07:22, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
I should have worked it out. First thing I looked at that morning, if I recall correctly, pre-coffee.
Still, I assume that this shows you how hard it would be for someone not already familiar with this to have found that ratioale on their own without clues. - Jmabel ! talk 22:08, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
