Photos I uploaded to National Register of Historic Places still not showing
It has been several months and the photos of several National Register of Historic Places still is not showing. I understand that it is volunteers who appove the photos and that there is much to do to keep this site going. I might be willing to be a volunteer in some manner to assist although my skill level may not be adequate but I think I could approve photos for national register of historic places as this is an area that I am especially interested in. Can you tell me if my photos will ever be displayed? MRobison (talk) 11:59, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
- @MRobison: what exactly do you mean by "not showing"? Are they missing from Special:ListFiles/MRobison (they should have appeared there instantly, and unless they were deleted they should still be there). - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 20 June 2026 (UTC)

Hexaware Logo Update Request
Hello,
The current logo used in this file is outdated. Hexaware has adopted a new corporate logo as part of its rebranding.
Current file: File:Hexaware_Logo.svg
Official logo source:
I am part of Hexaware's marketing/brand team and would like to request that the file be updated with the current official logo. I have already uploaded the updated SVG file and can provide any additional information required.
Could an administrator or file editor please assist with updating the logo or advise on the correct process?
link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hexaware_new_logo.svg New Logo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hexaware_Logo.svg
Thank you. Swagexploded (talk) 06:32, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, we usually keep old and new logos as old logos have historical value (see Category:Microsoft company logos for example). However, you may request renaming the files to reflect when the logos were used (e.g. File:Hexaware logo (YEARHERE-YEARHERE), see instructions at COM:RENAME). HyperAnd [talk] 10:28, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification.
- We fully understand the importance of retaining historical logos for archival purposes. Our concern is that the current file name and usage are causing AI search engines and generative AI platforms to frequently surface this older logo as the current Hexaware logo. As a result, users requesting the Hexaware logo are often presented with outdated branding.
- We would therefore appreciate renaming the file to clearly indicate that it is a historical logo (for example, including the years of use), while ensuring that the current logo is more prominently identified as the active corporate logo. This would help both Wikipedia readers and AI systems distinguish between the legacy and current brand identities.
- Thank you for your guidance and assistance. Swagexploded (talk) 13:44, 24 June 2026 (UTC)

- @HyperAnd: That is now free to be renamed. I moved the old logo to clear out the obvious name File:Hexaware_Logo.svg. Since I don't know the date it was adopted, the new name of the old logo indicates the date it was retired. - Jmabel ! talk 00:01, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: No, I mean that File:Hexaware Logo, retired December 2024.svg is actually the new logo, File:Hexaware new logo.svg is the old logo and the one that should've been renamed. The file names are misleading. HyperAnd [talk] 00:18, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- Arrgh! OK, the name was so misleading, I was misled myself. The fact that the one I moved wasn't used anywhere did not help make that clear, I assumed that was because it was outdated. I'll fix it now. - Jmabel ! talk 05:28, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

Uploading a photo
I am trying to upload a photo onto artist Mad Tsai’s Wikipedia page. The photo is from Paper Magazine but I am not sure how to navigate the copyright rules. Mad Tsai requested on app X to have this photo onto his page and I wanted to see if i could do it. I understand if Paper Magazine does not allow this use of their image. Gl4ciermeadow (talk) 21:48, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Gl4ciermeadow: there's a comprehensive copyright tutorial on COM:Uploading works by a third party that should fit the situation you're describing.
- A contemporary photo that was recently published in a magazine imperatively needs a free license granted by the actual copyrights holder. That should be either the magazine publisher or perhaps the original photographer. It could also be the person depicted, but that case needs a proof of transfer of copyrights in writing forwarded to the COM:VRT. If the picture doesn't get freely licensed, it can't be uploaded to Commons, and en:Mad Tsai already has a freely licensed image, so you won't be able to argue for a en:fair use exemption on the English Wikipedia.
- By my experience, I'd say that the outlook is bleak for the endeavour of getting that magazine image in the article. But: read en:Wikipedia:A picture of you! Apparently, there's some communication via Twitter, so it may be promising to ask Mad Tsai to make a selfie to his liking, upload it on X and to grant the needed license himself. Copyright on a federal tribe's seal
Hello. I am trying to add the Yankton Sioux Tribal Seal to the Yankton Sioux Tribe Wikipedia page. I'm sourcing the image from the Tribe's website, but can't find any copyright information. I've looked in the archive and can't find any similar questions/answers. Is a flag or a seal automatically public domain? Mulledegan (talk) 02:20, 25 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Mulledegan: No, it is not automatically PD. The fact that they are recognized by the federal government is an entirely different question than whether their seal was created by a federal employee as part of the performance of their job (which would make it PD). - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 25 June 2026 (UTC)

Thanks in advance, EinBeitrag (talk) 09:07, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
- @EinBeitrag: A new photo of the site can't, for obvious reasons, be taken; however, an existing photo could be relicensed by its copyright holder to make it OK for Commons. There are some examples of ways to do this in COM:ET. Another option could be uploading the content and using it under a claim of fair use or fair dealing. This can't be done with respect to Commons per COM:FAIR, but some of the different language Wikipedias do allow such content to be uploaded locally. German Wikipedia does seem to be a project that does allow such "fair use" content per meta:Non-free content, but you're going to need to ask about the specifics of German Wikipedia policy on German Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:19, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

hCaptcha system broken
Hello. I'm MGeog2022 user. I don't have an email address associated with my account, I have dynamic IP and I don't keep cookies in my browser, so I suppose this makes me more exposed to this type of problem. Until very recently, I was often prompted for a captcha on login; then, I filled it, and everything was right. With the new captcha system, this is a disaster: when prompted for a captcha, even if correctly selecting the right option, I'm not allowed to login. Since this change, I've been able to log in only when not prompted for a captcha (something that, of course, is beyond my control). I want to continue contributing to Commons and Wikipedia, and, at least for now, also to continue using this account. I value the privacy of not having to link my Wikimedia account to a personal email or phone, and I hope this can continue to be so. So I'd like to ask, to whoever can do something, for the captcha system to be fixed. Login being a lottery is just not acceptable. ~2026-37045-87 (talk) 10:24, 27 June 2026 (UTC)

File desc
Is it possible to just translate foreign-language file descriptions into the desired language, or does it have to be anything specific? I would make sure it makes sense first, or course. OliviaRigby (talk) 22:28, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- @OliviaRigby: That is too vague for me to answer confidently.
- For any file on Commons, in {{Information}} or another similar template, additional, accurate file descriptions in any number of languages are always welcome. Within the "description section", these should typically use the template for the relevant language code (e.g. {{En}} for English). An added description can be (but need not be) a translation of an existing description in a different language. Please do not simply add a machine translation: it is permissible for translators to use machine translation for assistance, but you should almost never attempt translation without a decent understanding of the source language and at least a near-native understanding of the target language.
- If that doesn't answer your question, then you'll have to be more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 04:11, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- I'd just like to get this correct: I can use machine-translation, but I must be able to have a understanding of source language and I should make sure it makes sense? Because I understand that bit. OliviaRigby (talk) 04:20, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- @OliviaRigby: yes, if you are competently knowledgeable to judge the machine translation and stand by it, you are allowed to use that tool. - Jmabel ! talk 05:39, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

Copyright of sculpture replica in a building pre-1987
Hi! I took some photos today in Clotilde Merlo Park in Stirling City, CA. Some of the photos have unique sculptures that most likely meet copyright infringements and therefore wouldn't hold up for wikimedia. However, in the chapel of the park is a shed with a replica of the Pieta de Michelangelo (attached a photo of the original here). And I mean a photo-realistic replica. Between that and the buildings of the park being placed in 1987 and therefore being eligible for the freedom of panorama, would the photo of the shed be OK to upload along with photos of the nature of the park? Wanted to check in here before uploading anything.

- @Lexilovescaffeine: A sufficiently accurate replica of a public-domain work is not copyrightable in its own right. Perhaps ironically, the worse the copy the more likely it is to be eligible for copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 04:13, 29 June 2026 (UTC)

Can I upload a presentation that was made using a PowerPoint template?
Hello! I recently gave a talk as part of a Wikipedia meet-up and was asked to upload it to Commons. This presentation was made using the default PowerPoint template "Berlin", which I cannot find copyright information for. Can I upload the presentation to Commons or is there some process involved with presentations that use a default theme like this? Thanks! Superraptor123 (talk) 12:32, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Superraptor123: There are a lot of PowerPoint templates out there called "Berlin". Can you be more specific (e.g. point to an example online)? Failing that: if it is copyrightable, then it is certainly copyrighted, and if you don't have an appropriate license for it, Commons can't host it. - Jmabel ! talk 05:42, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Is this template one that come provided with the software? If so, in general, if it's part of what came with PowerPoint/Office when you bought it (and it's a legally-licensed copy of Office in the first place), you own your creation and can apply whatever licensing you want to it, even though it uses the templates, clip art, fonts, and such that were provided. You couldn't redistribute the template itself without permission, of course, but just using it for your own work should be fine. It's similar to how your document isn't a "derived work" of Word or PowerPoint or whatever even though you're using those tools to create it. It's hard to find the exact clause laying it out in Microsoft's terms, though finding it isn't helped by there being a bazillion variations of Office depending on exactly what you bought and through whom. Can you say more about what exact version of software you own, and where this "Berlin" comes from in it? PeterCooperJr (talk) 13:20, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

Tracing of a photograph in collaboration with the original photographer
I am looking to upload an SVG tracing that I created with a team based on a photograph provided by a collaborator. The original photo is not published but I would like to list the members of the team as authors on the SVG. Am I able to list multiple people as authors on the license? If so, how should I do this? Micbenn (talk) 21:58, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Micbenn: Yes, though with multiple authors sharing a copyright it is probably wise to go through the VRT process with all relevant parties CC'd on the email, since no one WMF account can really vouch for everyone having signed off. In terms of attribution, virtually all license templates allow an open-ended indication of attribution. See, for example, File:Utsalady Ladies Aid 02.jpg for an example of this using {{Self}} and File:Alto Horno, Puerto de Sagunto, España, 2015-01-04, DD 91.JPG for an example using a license directly, without {{Self}}. - Jmabel ! talk 05:51, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

Uploading Torah reading audio files
I am trying to upload my Torah reading audio files on the BSD, but without success due to copyright issues. The creators are me on the BSD.- Assuming that you were trying to use MP3 as file format, אברהם יוסף זיידה, the upload block was due to you not having sufficient software rights, see Commons:File types#MP3. Use OGV instead, that should work. And what is "BSD"? You won't be able to directly upload from an URL (same thing: not enough rights), do that from your hard disk on your PC instead.

- Right. Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file or files with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, arrangers, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request COM:AP group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that/those and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload them with full documentation as .ogg files. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:31, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Ziv: I think that you'll be able as HE-3 user to overcome language barriers that Jeff or I encounter and deal with machine translations. Could you please help, too? The Wikimedian is in danger to get deterred, I fear, so a communication in Hebrew using COM:FS and similar should help. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:07, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- @אברהם יוסף זיידה: you and your contributions are very welcome! But it is admittedly complicated to find the way through the jungle of policies, rules and guidelines. Thus, I asked for the help of another user (named Ziv) who is likely able to communicate directly in Hebrew with you - I have to rely upon machine translations. Please wait for that. - @אברהם יוסף זיידה: Go to https://convert.to.it and upload your file there by clicking "Click to add your file". Pick "OGG" under "Convert to:" and download your file as an OGG file by clicking "Convert". Go to Special:UploadWizard and upload the OGG version and it should work. (By the way, if you have file extensions like "MP3" or "OGG" hidden, you should change your settings on your device to show it, so that you can distinguish which are MP3 or OGG files easily.) Best for Britain logo
Hello,
My organisation Best for Britain has recently redesigned our logo. Please can you or someone else update our page?
https://bestforbritain.org/ Joshedwicker1 (talk) 15:54, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome @Joshedwicker1, I assuming you are referring to the English Wikipedia page en:Best for Britain. The logo image is locally uploaded at English Wikipedia, not here in Wikimedia Commons, so you will need to update the file over there.
- As a suggestion, since the logo at the website is a SVG file with transparent background, I think the best way is to "screenshot" the logo displayed at the website as a PNG file, and overwrite the current logo image file at English Wikipedia. Feel free to let me know if you still need any help. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 19:46, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Joshedwicker1: Your organization's new logo appears to be below the threshold of originality (i.e., it looks to simple too be eligible for copyright protection) not only under US copyright law, where the Commons servers are located, but also under UK copyright law, which is likely the country of first publication; so, it should be OK for you to upload the file to Commons instead of uploading it locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content. Once you've done that, all that needs to be done is to replace the syntax for the old logo with the syntax for the new logo. You can do this yourself if you want, but before you do you should take a close look at en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure (if you've not already done so). The latter is very important because undisclosed paid editing ("paid" can be rather broadly construed and doesn't just mean monetary payment per se) is considered to be a violation of the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use and could lead to your account being blocked if you try to create/edit content about your organization on English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:09, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
Photo from foreign government website
Are photos published on the Israeli government website free to be used in a Wikipedia entry? The terms on the Israeli site are here: https://gpophoto.gov.il/haetonot/Eng_ShowPage.aspx?id=30; I'm not great at interpreting legalese and could use some help. Hrstruggle (talk) 19:40, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
Not OK because it prohibits commercial use and derivative works, both of which must be allowed. Subject to the terms of this License, the Licensor hereby grants the User a global, non-exclusive license, without royalties, which is unlimited vis-à-vis time and which is for any purpose – apart from use in the framework of commercial advertising of any kind, […] the User is not given the right to make changes in the Photograph or create derivative works […]. There are also other unacceptable restrictions in the license, like forbidding use for "political activity". See Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses for what restrictions can or cannot be accepted. HyperAnd [talk] 22:35, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. This is definitely not for "political activity", although what constitutes that would be another good thing to understand. Hrstruggle (talk) 23:09, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter whether uploading here constitutes "political activity", because we want people to download our freely-licensed files here and reuse the files for any purpose they wish, including political activity. Other restrictions, like "educational use only" are also unacceptable because again, the whole point of Wikimedia Commons, as stated in the Main Page, is a collection of 143,872,627 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute. Changing the logo of de:Bundesfreiwilligendienst
Dear editors,
I am currently trying to update the logo that is added to the page de:Bundesfreiwilligendienst since I work for the Bundesamt für Familie und zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben (BAFzA) that is administring the Bundesfreiwilligendienst. Since the logo is not a creative common I guess I would have to change it over on the actual page, but I don't seem to have the rights to edit or even upload a file there. Could you please help me to find the right way for updating the logo? Thanks in advance! Boss Jonas (talk) 08:45, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Boss Jonas: If you can link us to an example of the new logo, we can tell you whether it would be eligible for Commons.
- Other than that, though, this sounds like mostly a de-wiki issue, and would better be asked (in German) at de:Wikipedia:Fragen von Neulingen. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks so much already for your answer! You can find the logo on the top right corner on this website https://www.bundesfreiwilligendienst.de/ - since we use our written out slogan in the logo I just presume that it is not eligible for commons? Boss Jonas (talk) 05:08, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Google translation from Portuguese: how to post: how do I post something without it being so complicated TSventon (talk) 15:03, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
Copyright violation/incorrect rationale?
Recently on enwiki, two images (File:Robin Wesman.jpg and File:Sayers mugshot, taken at the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.webp) were uploaded to Commons and linked on enwiki by @Elina Dale. These images were uploaded as "own work" which does not seem possible as they are driver's license photos and therefore state property, and in different states no less. I know in some states these are considered public domain, but either way, the rationale here is incorrect. I'm unsure what the process on commons is for rectifying this issue, so I wanted to leave a message here to request help in following the correct procedures for fixing this. Thanks. Wasianpower (talk) 15:34, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Wasianpower: The uploader is still active on en-wiki. If you want to salvage the photos, you might start by contacting them to see if they can help sort this out. Otherwise, I'd start a deletion request for each of these, and say that clearly the licensing is wrong, although you suspect the image may be in the public domain, in which case it would be good if someone could tag it correctly and keep it. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- Both Minnesota and California hold that all works created by the their employees are in public domain (See: {{PD-MGS}} and {{PD-CAGov}}). So, you just put those tags on the respective images. Ruslik (talk) 20:24, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Ruslik0: I'm not sure {{PD-MGS}} would apply to mugshots; it seems to only apply to works created by employees of the en:Minnesota Geological Survey, not the State of Minnesota itself. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:35, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Netanelile (talk) 06:23, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Netanelile: I see the file has now been deleted as a copyright violation. It appears you uploaded someone's profile picture from Instagram. Please make sure you are only uploading files that you have the rights to (e.g. photos you took yourself), or files that are otherwise verifiably freely licensed or public domain files.
- In the future, if you upload a file with an incorrect filename, you can request the file simply be renamed instead of deleted. See Commons:File renaming for more details and instructions. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 10:38, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
