Summary

Description

New Market is a historic street market on S. 2nd Street between Pine and Lombard Streets in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1745 and originally consisted of 16 stalls. In 1804 the Head House, a Georgian-style brick firehouse with Federal-style ornamentation, was built at the north end of the market; the building's cupola once housed a firebell. The fire house is the oldest extent in the United States, and is now used as a community center. The market structure was demolished in 1950 but rebuilt in the early 1960s, and the Head House was restored. (Source: Philadelphia Architecture: A Guide to the City (2nd ed.))
