English : Red Sea bannerfish (Heniochus intermedius), Red Sea, Egypt. The Red Sea bannerfish attains as maximum total length of 18 centimetres (7.1 in) and is native to the western Indian Ocean where it is found in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It's associated with coral reefs where it is most frequently recorded as a solitary fish or in pairs, although large schools have been recorded. The juveniles form large schools, particularly in areas of deep reef where there is a low density of corals. They feed on both zooplankton and benthic invertebrates but the extent to which they feed on live coral has still to be determined. It is an oviparous species which forms monogamous pairs for spawning. It's collected for the aquarium trade but its collection is of a limited scale and is not believed to be a threat to the species population. |

English : The intertwined roots of two birches (Betula pendula) next to Myrstigen hiking trail in Brastad, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. The birches grow in a rest and grilling area with benches. Being of the right height, the roots are often used as an extra sitting place, and they get scuffed and polished regularly by the people using them. The other roots in the area are covered with moss and lichen. The area is also on a slope, so it gets washed free of debris as soon as it rains. This leaves the roots more exposed than others in the forest, and they look like shiny veins of the forest. |

English : View of the Basilica Cistern, Istanbul, Turkey. The Basilica Cistern, or Cisterna Basilica is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city. This subterranean cistern was called Basilica because it was located under a large public square, the Stoa Basilica, on the First Hill of Constantinople. The cistern, built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine emperor Justinian I, provided a water filtration system for the Great Palace of Constantinople and other buildings on the First Hill, and continued to provide water to the Topkapı Palace after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 and into modern times. Today it is kept with little water, for public access inside the space. |
