License Question

Hi there, I'm sorry to ask a copyright question that has definitely been asked before but I read the guidelines and I'm still a bit confused. I uploaded some files:

File:Line Drawing of the Maya Moon Goddess.png
File:Maya Maize God.png
File:Maya Moon Goddess.jpg

and I didn't realize what I was doing yet so all I did was make sure they were public domain and put in the link and specific verbiage the website gives about permissions in the comments box. I'm now going back to fix the license issue, which I was able to do a bit more intuitively for other uploads of ancient artworks taken from museums. However, the above three files comes from here https://www.mayavase.com/ and in the third paragraph of the homepage it says "All photographs in both databases are in the public domain." is it alright to just use the same public domain license I used for the ancient artworks? These files are images of line drawings of artist Linda Schele, so I wasn't sure if this is different.

Thank you, SakAwilix SakAwilix (talk) 03:23, 14 July 2026 (UTC)

@SakAwilix: I fear that the permission on that website is not sufficient. The usual standard is, as far as I'm aware, to basically understand any permission in the most restrictive way that is possible - the authorisation to any activity that is not explicitly covered by any given permission, license or the law remains as the prerogative of the work author. Here, we've got the issue that the website author first states "The photographs in Mayavase.com were created with few exceptions by Justin Kerr over a period of thirty years.", declaring himself copyright owner (all good), and then "All photographs in both databases are in the public domain. They may be published for any scholarly or lawful purpose." (emphasis mine) The image at http://research.mayavase.com/kerrmaya_list.php?_allSearch=&hold_search=&x=31&y=5&vase_number=2733&date_added=&ms_number=&site= , an actual photograph, is different from the drawing from https://www.mayavase.com/2733/com2733.html you uploaded. Drawings made after photographs are often derivative works which are partly entitled to their own copyright, depending on the amount of creative work involved (see COM:TOO for details). But basically, you can't in my opinion rely upon the website's authorisation for photographs when dealing with drawings that were made by third parties. An explicit clearance from the actual copyright owners would be needed - something like {{Copyrighted free use}} would be sufficient, though. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 03:53, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
Hmmm, okay thank you for this. I'll go ahead and edit the articles I implemented these into so that I use alternate photos instead. Also if I may ask one more question:
File:Ceramic figure of moon goddess and rabbit.jpg
This file above was also missing a license because I didn't know what I was doing when I uploaded it, but I went in and added the public domain license that is explicitly given by Princeton Museum https://artmuseum.princeton.edu/art/collections/objects/18122 when you go to download the image. However the original warning of "This media file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status." hasn't gone away yet even though it is now listed as public domain. Is this just because it's pending approval and the license was just added, or is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks again for your help,
Brian SakAwilix (talk) 04:12, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
Also sorry one more thing. As I intend to use photographs from https://www.mayavase.com/2733/com2733.html, would I then just use a public domain license like normal? SakAwilix (talk) 04:20, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
@SakAwilix: going by the wording alone on the website, {{PD-Author}} appears to be fine. But it's a "non-standard" release where the author may have misunderstood the implications of such a release. I would suggest doing the same as courts do in the regard of the law, interpreting Mr. Kerr's intention but erring on the side of caution, and go for a {{CC-by-4.0}} license. That way, the authorship of Justin Kerr gets acknowledged. My reason for that idea: stating sources is the norm when doing scholarly work, and CC-by is somewhat more restrictive than a true PD-Author. It's not sure enough that he intended to release all control on his files; naming him as author is a good thing to do. The code would be: {{CC-by-4.0|Justin Kerr}}. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:20, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
Even better would be to ask Justin Kerr directly for an agreement, he's publishing his e-mail on his website. If he would directly accept the CC-By 4.0 (if you're writing him, SakAwilix, point him to the similarities between his wording and the CC-By!), then we'd get the most hassle-free outcome. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 20:17, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
@Grand-Duc and SakAwilix: You absolutely do not want to say that someone offered a specific CC license that they did not, in fact, offer. Please do not do that. Accounts have been blocked for less.
If you want to rely on the author's statement cited above, and you want to be cautious about the attribution side of it, {{Attribution only license}} is a tremendously better choice. - Jmabel ! talk 23:58, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
Ok I recently uploaded an image a used a PD-Author license as I figured his stating that all images taken by him are public domain if on the database, that this was a fitting license. Im sorry if that was an ill-fitting choice. Should I go in and change it to an attribution only license? SakAwilix (talk) 00:05, 18 July 2026 (UTC)

Soviet General Staff military maps

Are Soviet General Staff military maps in the public domain? Can they be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? S. Mochar (talk) 18:23, 16 July 2026 (UTC)

Sizes of uploads in pixels growing

I upload some files with specific pixel sizes like 2025 Pixels across, but when I look at the files sizes, they are now much bigger, like 3,840 pixels wide. Why is that? can I stop if from happening? Molly.Farr (talk) 14:30, 17 July 2026 (UTC)

Do you have one or two examples? I looked at some files from your contributions (Special:ListFiles/Molly.Farr) but didn't spot anything related to the issue you're asking about. File:Charlemagne 2 lg.jpg for instance has that pixel count of 2025 on the long side. Please elaborate! Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:17, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1895_Lithograph_of_the_Conversion_of_the_Saxons.jpg. On this page, my upload is 1,335 × 751 as shown at the bottom and just under the picture is shows the largest size being 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. Molly.Farr (talk) 15:56, 17 July 2026 (UTC)
@Molly.Farr: Very strange. Do you still have the original JPEG that you uploaded and, if so, what are its dimensions? - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
The original jpeg is the 1,335 × 751 size that I uploaded Molly.Farr (talk) 09:32, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Clicking the 1920x1080px link actually shows the full resolution 1335x751 image, not an upscaled version. MKFI (talk) 06:11, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Okay then. I know upscaling some pics too much causes them to pixelate badly and reduce the quality. Which I do not want to happen. Molly.Farr (talk) 09:43, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Another page: File:CorusSteelworks.jpg is 800px wide but shows 960px thumbnail link. @Krinkle: is this related to the thumbnail size changes? MKFI (talk) 06:38, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
This sounds like it's possibly related to phab:T432193. Sam Wilson 01:47, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Submit photos for challenge Disaster

Hello I tried to submit two photos for the Disaster challenge but it's impossible. I have a red advertisment "Dacă nu furnizaţi informaţii corecte şi complete despre sursa şi despre licenţa fişierului, acesta va fi şters fără alte avertismente. Vă mulţumim pentru înţelegere." meaning that I have to complete the source - it's my work and I have to specify the license. But I own the copyright and I would like to keep it that way. Also I don't know in which category I should insert. Photos, challenges... it's not simple. thank you. Marina ANC (talk) 13:10, 18 July 2026 (UTC)

Título para imagen de Wikimedia

Buenas tardes. Intento publicar un título para una imagen de Wikimedia, pero no lo aceptan incluso aunque cumple todas las condiciones. Just this: "Please write a more informative title". Santiago Brra. (talk) 22:09, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Bizarre. If anything, it is unusually verbose. That sounds like a glitch. - Jmabel ! talk 22:24, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
You may have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/335 or another measure on your local wiki by trying to cross-wiki upload a file as a new user per proposal; you may upload the file here on Commons with Special:UploadWizard instead, if it is in compliance.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:08, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: possibly, but if that's the case he certainly should not have received a message telling him that the problem was a blacklisted file name. - Jmabel ! talk 20:05, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

not sure if com:autoconfirmed matters. RoyZuo (talk) 17:00, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
a possible problem is the blacklist of unusual whitespaces or any such characters. maybe there was such a disallowed character in the filename the user gave to uploadwizard, but when they filed this report that character was not copied over. RoyZuo (talk) 17:06, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

I am working on en:Draft:Michael S. Berman, and I have found a photo of him in File:Departure of Gen Obass anya of Nigeria. 12-14 Hugh Carter, Mike Berman, Vice President, Bill Cable - DPLA - 8b1abf8387aece73e7b69b95d869e7a8.jpg, but it is undeveloped. Is there some developed version that exists, or some way to have these photos be developed. I also found four other undeveloped photographs on external cites that seem to indicate they were made by White House photographers in the course of their duties and thus fine for Commons, but they aren't on commons for the best of my knowledge. I know most of these photos were posted here en masse by a bot, is there a reason these weren't? And same for the last question, on whether it is possible to get these developed somehow or if some such version exists. 1brianm7 (talk) 03:25, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Clearly that is "developed": that's a contact sheet. It may not be enlarged.
The contact sheet is at (barely) high enough resolution that you could crop out the photo you want and use it in an article. There might be prints somewhere, but I have no idea how you would find them if regular searching hasn't turned them up. - Jmabel ! talk 06:54, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
Apologies. I am not particularly familiar with photography. 1brianm7 (talk) 07:00, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
And how about that. In the 10 months since I searched and discovered these photos, a bot did in fact go around and upload them. Ha! 1brianm7 (talk) 08:01, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

Additional License Question

Hi there,

I want to upload an image of an ancient piece of artwork that is housed at the Princeton Museum. Princeton Museum says, "Princeton University Art Museum supports free access to images of works in the Public Domain. You are welcome to download this image for your use." but there is not obvious choice for public domain tag. Which should I use, the image is located here: https://artmuseum.princeton.edu/art/collections/objects/18122 SakAwilix (talk) 05:01, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

You don't describe the nature of the artwork in question. If the piece is 2-dimensional, then no new copyright is created by making a faithful copy; you can use use {{PD-art|PD-old-100-expired}}. However, if the piece is 3-dimensional, then any photo of it would carry its own copyright, and all the usual considerations for using a third-party photo would apply. - Jmabel ! talk 07:00, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Kylian Mbappe

Hi,
File:Kylian Mbappe - France v Norway - 26 June 2026 (cropped).jpg is cropped by another user from File:Kylian Mbappe France v Norway 26 June 26-041.jpg and has a derivative work of blurring the background.
Is {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} valid, or it should be {{cc-by-sa-4.0|original creator}}? Dgw|Talk 14:55, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Cropping does not normally give you a copyright, so it needs to attribute to the original creator. "Self" can be kept, as long as the "author=" parameter is added to {{Self}} with the appropriate value. - Jmabel ! talk 20:07, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
Thank you. Is it fine? Dgw|Talk 15:25, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
There are additional images. I also edited it. I did not understand the source={{Own}}. Should the user be notified? I do not know exactly how to notify, and cannot follow their edits either. It is a whole Mondial. Dgw|Talk 15:56, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
@Dorian Gray Wild: I usually just fix these when I see them, but if the uploader who did the crop seems to be doing a substantial number of crops of other people's photos, it's probably worth reminding them of this. Also, I really recommend that when people use {{Self}} they would do well to use the "author" parameter so that this is not set up to happen when somebody crops. Pinging @Bryan Berlin: you might want to do in the future that when you upload using {{Self}}, so that your work does not end up accidentally credited to someone else. - Jmabel ! talk 19:02, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
  • oops, user name is not what was visible as a credit. Pinging @Berlination for the above. - Jmabel ! talk 02:34, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for the useful assistance. I fixed the @ping, and they would care about their rights. In any case, source={{Own}} was misused by the other uploader. I really thank the author for going to the stadiums (New Jersey, Boston, Arlington and many others) and producing these excellent images. It seemed that they were on the grass. My photo keeps getting removed

I have uploaded my own image of actress Yali Topol Margalith numerous times and it gets removed, can anyone help me ? Jemimashoots (talk) 21:08, 21 July 2026 (UTC)

@Jemimashoots: How can other people see that this image, File:Yali Topol Margalith.jpg, is indeed yours, meaning it was photographed by you? Does it have meaningful and intact EXIF? Was it published somewhere else beforehand? If you do not have the original source file, meaning a JPEG as produced by your camera (be it a phone camera or a DSLR or similar), then I fear that it's not possible to demonstrate your authorship. @Didym: You deleted the file, what was the EXIF situation at that point? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:27, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
Ok I understand, strange that iPhones do not state it was taken by me as my phone is in my name. Also strange that the original image of Yali somehow screenshotted from a random and not very flattering picture of hers was put up without her permission and was not removed? Jemimashoots (talk) 06:26, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
@Jemimashoots: there are a couple of things going on here.
  1. If a file you uploaded is deleted please do not upload that file again. In the future if one of your files is inappropriately deleted, either contact the administrator who deleted it so that the two of you can discuss the matter, or start an undeletion request. If you simply re-upload the file after it has been deleted, it is likely that your account will be blocked.
  2. It looks like at time of deletion the EXIF data in the file consisted of just date and size (nothing about device it was photographed with or about exposure length, for example.) Assuming you did take it with an iPhone, that means some EXIF was stripped. There are a few ways that files can be uploaded from an iPhone. I gather that some of them keep EXIF data and others strip it. (I don't us an iPhone myself, so I don't know the details. Someone who does may want to weigh in.) I do know that if you also have a laptop or desktop computer, connecting the two, using a normal file copy to copy the image file to the computer, and then uploading from there should consistently preserve EXIF data.
  3. At this point, given what's already happened, if you want the file restored, your best bet is to go the COM:VRT route. You can carry on a confidential correspondence with the Volunteer Response Team to establish to their satisfaction that you took the photograph in question and that the upload was legitimate. Assuming you still have the original file on your iPhone, with the EXIF, that should be pretty easy. If not, it may be a more complicated process. - Jmabel ! talk 07:01, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Question about freedom of panorama in relation to country

COM:Scope dictates that all files must "be freely licensed or public domain according to both the law of the United States and according to the law of the source country" but images of artwork/sculptures etc created after 198 taken with COM:Freedom of panorama are not public domain in the US. However, everything from Category:Wax figures in the Madame Tussauds London is still up despite not being "freely licensed or public domain according to [...] the law of the United States". I would appreciate some clarification on this matter, thanks! Paccyd33 (talk) 01:42, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

@Paccyd33: No idea what you mean by "after 198" (I'm guessing you meant some year, but it still doesn't make sense for any law I know).
In general, our FOP policy is that if a photo is taken in a manner that follows Freedom of Panorama for the source country, we do not separately apply the more restrictive U.S. FOP rules. Yes, this is somewhat inconsistent with how we generally do things, but it is the policy we've adopted, and neither the Wikimedia Foundation as such (the "umbrella organization" under which Commons sits) nor WMF's legal department have expressed concerns about that policy, which has been in place as long as I remember (certainly well over a decade, probably more like two decades). - Jmabel ! talk 07:10, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Process for verifying and submitting a licenced photograph

I have a photo that I want to use with an edit I want to submit for publication. The Photographer is releasing it to me for use. Does Wikipedia provide an application to submit to the photographer? What paperwork must I submit? TenTalNet (talk) 16:26, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

@TenTalNet: Thank you for asking and your intent to strictly observe copyrights! In a nutshell: you have to demonstrate an agreement that the actual copyright holder consents to a free license. It is also OK to prove that you're actually owning any copy- and neighbouring intellectual property rights if applicable, so that you can make the licensing. A release "For Wikipedia" is not enough. There's a comprehensive guide at COM:THIRD dealing with such questions. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:32, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Upload signature to a biography

Hello! I’m not sure if the signature of anthropologist Berta Ribeiro — which I found on a copy of a document she authored here — meets the necessary criteria to be uploaded to Commons, because she lived in Brazil. Could an editor evaluate whether it can be used? And if so, could upload the image, please. It seems difficult for me to do on my current smartphone... Thanks in advance! Welcoming

Hi dear fellows, in my opinion is not a good idea to welcome all users, vandals and spammers especially, I think welcoming should not be an automatic process, it would be done manually only to users who demonstrate good intentions, as occurs on other wikis. ~2026-41030-80 (talk) 00:23, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Deleting my content

Hi, my name is BoltonArt. Some years ago I created a page for a living person based on the biography he wrote for himself as a uni project. I meant to practice this not leaving it on wiki for years but I recently have realized that this person has been misusing the publicity he thinks he’s gained from this wiki page. As the author and creator of the page “Houmayoun Mahmoudi” I wish to request deletion of this page. Please can you help many thanks 🙏 Boltonart (talk) 11:51, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

@Boltonart: I assume you are referring to Houmayoun Mahmoudi on en-wiki. There is nothing Commons can do to get a page deleted on another project. - Jmabel ! talk 20:47, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Proper use of wikimedia commons content on https://web.locusmap.app ?

Hello,

I came across this website that "hot links" content from wikimedia commons.

There is no mentions of the author or licence, just a link to the content file page one you have clicked on the image thumbnail (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chateau-de-Gisors.jpg).

Is this a proper user of wikimedia content or some attribution is missing ?

Thanks Sebourg (talk) 13:41, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

That looks like they are violating User:Nitot's copyright. The seem to be recently active on fr-wiki, though not on Commons. They may or may not see this here; @Sebourg, feel free to contact them more directly to let them know. - Jmabel ! talk 20:51, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Uploading a photograph of a child's drawing

I wanted to upload this photo of a child's drawing, I have permission from the Reddit user who took the photo but obviously it would be impossible to track down the kid who drew it. Can I still upload it? Would the Reddit user be able to submit a license email? Would they even have to? https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbphones/comments/1v4jf7c/found_this_note_posted_outside_a_hiking_trail/ Moonliner72 (talk) 18:07, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

You will still need a permission form the author (the child). Ruslik (talk) 20:41, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
Or, more likely, their parent or guardian. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
Though, according to this answer by Creative Commons, we do need permission from the child, at least in the United States. HyperAnd [talk] 05:59, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
The problem is, since the guy who took the photo doesn't know the kid, the author is unknown. So there's no way to get permission. I found this file: File:"Perigo!" (15461815780).jpg which might fall under the same thing. The photographer gave permission to use the photo, but the person who made the sign is unknown. Would it be allowed under US law, or is it different because it's in Brazil? Moonliner72 (talk) 18:10, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
This would not be allowed under any law. Ruslik (talk) 19:09, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
No. That's just the harsh reality when dealing with orphan works. HyperAnd [talk] 07:45, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Astro photography

This sounds ridiculous but ... do we have (or would anyone object to) a Space photographs taken on 19xx-xx-xx category? Moon photographs taken on 19xx-xx-xx etc? Parent could be a subcategory of Photographs taken on xxxx as individual country ones are. No Swan So Fine (talk) 11:59, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

@No Swan So Fine, don't fall into the tarpit of COM:OVERCAT and the one with categories replacing descriptions, always think about re-users who might want to browse fitting categories. It's a pain in the bum to search through overly precise categories, and standard people searching for illustrations don't use Deepcat to display the contents of several categories at once. I don't think that it should go deeper than years fundamentally, only when the amount of files becomes too high (more than 50-100) for a year category, break it down to months, and only if a month gets over-filled, break it down to weeks or days. On wikipedia some images which are non-free can be used out of the fact that theyre fair use, but only on wikipedia itself. This includes passports, and often logos. I'm not sure, but if there is no help here, you could ask there aswell. Tomas Guus (talk) 13:28, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
@Wiki.cowboy: Let me see if I can make that clearer. I'm assuming you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia, if not then the following may not be exactly correct.
Under no circumstances does Commons allow non-free images. However, the English-language Wikipedia makes limited allowance for non-free content. See en:Wikipedia:Logos#Uploading non-free logos. - Jmabel ! talk 20:12, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

File wont update.

I've uploaded a new version of a file, but it wont update. It does show when just looking at the main file, but when downloading or clicking on it, it still shows the old file. I've done the same to my textless version, and there it has updated. Any ideas on why this happens or is it just a waiting game? Tomas Guus (talk) 13:25, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

@Tomas Guus: caching problem. There are a few places along the way that caching can occur. If it is on your own computer, you may be able to fix it just by refreshing the page or, for now, you may have to try a different browser or a different device. If it is on the server side, you can often solve it by adding "?action=purge" to the end of the URL (or, if there is already a query string in the URl, "&action=purge"). That will typically produce a page asking if you want to purge. You can try that on the file page and/or on the page where the file is used, either can separately be at issue. Doesn't always work (sometimes it's just a waiting game), but it works more often than not. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

No, the copyright would belong to the photographer or someone they assigned it to. You could quite likely get them to offer a free license; COM:VRT probably tells you all you need on that front, though COM:THIRD is a broader discussion of uploading third-party content. Or you could take another picture yourself and upload that. - Jmabel ! talk 05:33, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

issues with account

Hello, I am an American Professor and I am trying to contact some of the authors of images in Wikimedia in order to get from them the authorization to include them properly in my new book. It seems that it is mandatory to create an account in order to proceed, so I tried but with no success. When I create a new username and password my IP is blocked and I cannot move forward.. Why? I am not in US right now and I am traveling so I have no control on the local wifi. Can you please help me to solve this issue? Or is there an alternative way to contacts the authors of specific images? Many thanks! best Maurizio ~2026-41351-89 (talk) 09:55, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

Dear Maurizio, if the account creation does not end in a usable state for whatever reason at this moment, you can still use the user talk pages to leave a message. Mine for instance is at User talk:Grand-Duc, the pattern is uniformly: "User talk:INSERT USER NAME". Those pages are exactly for the purpose you're describing: contacting Wikimedians. Bear in mind that anybody can read messages posted there, though. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:55, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
@~2026-41351-89: Have you also tried using quota/roaming to make an account yet? If that fails, you can try requesting an account by following the instructions at en:Wikipedia:Request an account. (Note that although the page linked above is for Wikipedia, you can use the same credentials to log into Wikimedia Commons after getting a Wikipedia account.) Do fine art prints count as faithful reproductions in regards to overwriting?

Hello, I really enjoy this piece of art by Gustave Moreau: File:Helen Moreau.jpg. Unfortunately, the upload on commons is not very high quality. I've found this image of fine-art print which appears to be accurate. Does this fall under the bit of COM:PD which states "Faithful reproductions of two-dimensional works of art, such as paintings, which are in the public domain [...] are accepted as public domain regardless of country of origin"? If, as indicated, the photo was taken by "Texas department of public safety and TXDOT" then it is certainly copyrighted and should be deleted. The copyright status of the stickers would not matter.
The stickers may or may not be complex enough to copyright; they are pretty close to the U.S. threshold of originality for copyright. My guess is that they are just under (not copyrightable).
"Still" in you question is confusing: U.S. copyrights for works since 1 March 1989 last a minimum of 70 years from creation (basically, the only way it's ever that short is that a known author dies the same year as the work was created), and it doesn't look like anything here is older than 1989. - Jmabel ! talk 02:55, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
