Modern art. I think artist identity/permission confirmation via Commons:OTRS is necessary.

This file was initially tagged by ~2025-42775-11 as Speedy (speedydelete) and the most recent rationale was: Although this photograph was published in Pakistan in 1962 and may now be in the public domain under Pakistani law, it was still under copyright on 1 January 1996. Therefore, U.S. copyright was restored under the URAA. PD-Pakistan alone is insufficient for Wikimedia Commons, and the file lacks a valid U.S. public domain status. - URAA deletions go to DR The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 04:50, 28 December 2025 (UTC)

  • I love to find loopholes on this, but Pakistan had publication plus 50 years for photos in 1962, and Bangladesh was part of Pakistan at the time. I can't think of any reason URAA wouldn't apply (unless we can find a newspaper that published this in the US). -Nard (Hablemonos) (Let's talk) 13:18, 29 December 2025 (UTC)
Note that the Daily Azad newspaper is now defunct, and it is unclear who currently holds the rights to its intellectual property (possibly the government). The Bangladesh National Archives provide access to these newspapers to registered members. I personally possess about 8 GB of material obtained from the archives.
I am advocating for a future GLAM collaboration between Wikimedia Bangladesh and the National Archives, and I am preparing for a meeting with the Bangladesh Copyright Office to discuss this, among other issues.

@Yann, you know this is a textlogo, so why did you tag it for speedy deletion on the basis of the lack of a license? My objection would be that it is probably not notable.  Delete for that reason. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:34, 5 February 2026 (UTC)
@Ikan Kekek: This is not a speedy deletion tag. I tag all files without a license as such. Then 6D converts this to a regular DR, which is useless, as it is probably out of scope. The uploader uploaded this, and then disappeared. Yann (talk) 17:37, 5 February 2026 (UTC)

Files in Category:1940s paintings by Rex Whistler

These images are not in the public domain in the United States. They are photographic depictions of artworks that were published in the 1940s, i.e., after 1931, in the United Kingdom, and were not in the public domain in the UK on January 1, 1996. Thus, their U.S. copyrights were extended by the URAA, and will not expire until at least 2035.

JJPMaster (she/they) 05:52, 28 December 2025 (UTC)

In addition, File:Rex Whistler - Gilbert Ryle, Fellow.jpg, which was published at some unspecified date in or before 1966. Since we no reason to think it was also published before 1930, we must apply the precautionary principle. JJPMaster (she/they) 05:59, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
Keep. From June 1940 until his death in 1944, Whistler was a member of the British Army, so PD:UKGov applies, that is a now expired Crown Copyright of 50 years.14GTR (talk) 15:05, 30 December 2025 (UTC)
@14GTR: What reason do we have to believe that Whistler created these paintings "in the course of his duties [as a servant of the Crown]"? JJPMaster (she/they) 04:03, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
Rex Whistler was not an official War Office artist. He was considered for the British War Artists scheme in 1940 but was not appointed. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 01:11, 6 February 2026 (UTC)

Out of scope: this appears to be an AI-generated image. Are there any real images of this military insignia which can be used instead? Omphalographer (talk) 07:18, 28 December 2025 (UTC)

Comment It would appear to be a superior rendition of File:Head badge of the Vietnam People's Army.svg, and is described as a cap badge on the article it is being used, including details about measurements. I do not agree that it is inherently out of scope, whether it is AI or not. Fry1989 eh? 23:21, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
It's not quite the same, though - for instance, this image has a bow tie over the lower half of the gear, whereas the original has no such element. This is why I'm suspicious of AI-generated emblems; they have an unfortunate tendency to reinterpret the source material. Omphalographer (talk) 01:08, 29 December 2025 (UTC)
Based on a quick search, that element would appear to be correct. Fry1989 eh? 15:15, 29 December 2025 (UTC)

copyright violation, no permissions for the depicted texts / photos; no freedom of panorama.

Martin Sg. (talk) 18:23, 28 December 2025 (UTC)

Strong keep Dear Martin Sg., all the images were made during an official visit of the museum for Wikipedians organised in collaboration with the museum, in the presence of the curators and with their authorisation to take photos. The photos at the Museum Rietberg, Museum University of Zurich and ETH were produced in the frame of the project meta:Decolonising knowledge; the photos at the Museo civico di scienze naturali were made during a guided tour offered by the museum followed by an edit-a-thon (w:it:Wikipedia:Raduni/Editathon al Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano: Alla scoperta del Museo). There is no copyright violation, we have the permission from the institutions and the curators for the texts and photos (photos produced during events for wikipedians organised by the institutions and curators) and there is no issue of freedom of panorama since we are talking about photos produced inside institutions (museums and exhibition space of a university library). Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any question. Thanks for your work and my best regards, iopensa (talk) 15:44, 29 December 2025 (UTC)
Dear Iopensa, yes, I've seen that; but I'm not sure whether this means automatically a valuable permission in sense of VRT. And: In Switzerland, indoors do not belong to public display in sense of freedom of panorama. Greetings! --Martin Sg. (talk) 16:32, 29 December 2025 (UTC)

I could easily imagine @Giubertinik being Enrico Giubertoni, but since there is an issue, he should contact the COM:VRT. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:26, 6 February 2026 (UTC)

But this does not make freedom of panorama to apply for the sculpture. Taivo (talk) 15:25, 30 December 2025 (UTC)
Is a relief that is part of a building really treated as a sculpture under Russian law? If so, what does the law say about other surface decorations on the outer walls? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:28, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
This is clear. Freedom of panorama applies for architecture, but not for sculpture. If this is architecture, then it is allowed, if this is sculpture, then it is not allowed. And other decorations on outer walls – murals, posters – all prohibited. Taivo (talk) 22:00, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
Murals and posters are obviously affixed to the side of a building, but this looks like part of the building, so the specifics of Russian law would be determinative in this case. And when I brought up surface decorations, I was thinking of specifically architectural elements. Most historical architectural styles include decoration and not simply straight tetrahedrons for buildings. The latter style was common after World War II, but not all buildings built since then are in that style. And I can't imagine that if there is a neo-Gothic building in Russia, all its stylistic decorations would be excluded from Russian FoP, but again, the specifics of their laws would be determinative. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:08, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
I can't find any cases on stucco. Idk whether I'm just not using the right search terms, but I'm not even finding any discussions about stucco in context of copyright. Nakonana (talk) 20:25, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
Russian Federal Law № 169-ФЗ defines architectural object as «building, construction, complex of buildings, their interior, objects of urban improvement, landscape or gardening art, made based on the architectural project». As it defines interiors separately as a part of architectural object and doesn't define exteriors, seems least ones aren't even questioned as a part of it. Also based on that any statues that are part of architectural project are falling into freedom of panorama. Красный wanna talk? 19:35, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
Keep It would be news to me that ornaments and Stucco on buildings have separate copyright from the building. I mean, even gargoyles on buildings are usually covered by FoP as part of the architecture of a building.
The image of Lenin can also be found on state awards (File:Leninpeace f.jpg) which are PD-Rus-exempt). Nakonana (talk) 19:43, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

Will there be another thread about it? Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:12, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
Keep, part of building, in scope of FOP for architectural objects. Filename is wrong, wording "памятный знак в честь В.И.Ленина" (in English "commemorative sign in honor of V.I.Lenin") is incorrect. Should be like this: "head of V.I.Lenin in decorative relief". --Kaganer (talk) 12:56, 4 March 2026 (UTC)

Files in Category:Ashlawn

Due to a confusion with addresses (no fault of the uploaders - see en:Talk:Ashlawn), these two photos do not depict the historic house. Instead, they are of an unremarkable 20th century house nearby. I have replaced all usages with File:Ashlawn, Hanover, Connecticut, December 2025.JPG which depicts the correct building.

File:3D Medical Animation Mitral Valve Prolapse.jpg

This diagram is misleadingly labeled, and unfortunately we cannot easily edit the label to correct it as it is a jpg. It doesn't show the cusps of the mitral valve on the right reaching any higher into the atrium than those on the left. This is simply an insufficiency, not a prolapse. However, the label clearly says "prolapse", making it misleading. Hence, I have removed it from all five wikis it was used on. I suggest deleting it here as well.
