מכתב הסכמה להעלאת תמונה - באנגלית

שלום, האם אפשר לקבל את ההנחיות לחתימה על ההסכמה לשחרור זכויות יוצרים של תמונה באנגלית? תודה רבה, Daphncm (talk) 12:10, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

Google translates as "Hello, can I have the instructions for signing the image copyright release agreement in English? Many thanks". It's not clear what agreement is wanted. Please clarify. You may need COM:THIRD. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:32, 28 July 2026 (UTC)

Account policy

I've recently had the thought that I'd like to upload a few photos I've taken to Wikimedia Commons, but I'd rather they not be tied to this account name as I've had this account since I was a kid and there are a lot of embarrassing edits from twenty years ago. As far as I can tell, sockpuppetry is permitted as long as you're not doing it for abusive reasons, but I wanted to check that this was something I could do before I break the rules. Editor510 (talk) 14:18, 29 July 2026 (UTC)

@Editor510: The simplest way would be to stop doing new work under this account and start a new, different account. (You could still use this one if responding to matters related to your old uploads, etc., just keep the new account out of those.) You could start a new account and continue to operate both accounts, but it is definitely harder to keep from involving both in the same matters than if you essentially drop the old one.
In short, you are allowed to have two active accounts, but the more active they both are, the harder not to break rules. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I don't think I've ever uploaded anything to Commons under this account name. I only use this account name for my Wikipedia edits. I'd want to create a separate account solely for uploading to Commons. -- Editor510 (talk) 08:27, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
@Editor510: please bear in mind that any account is usable for any Wikimedia project (it's the effect of the single-user login), so, even if you intend to have a "Wikipedia account" and a "Commons account", both will be usable on all projects anyway. It's upon you to avoid breaking sockpuppet rules on other projects (I think that EN may be rather strict, there). A possible solution could be to ask a friendly admin for a voluntary block on projects you do not intend to use e.g. your "Commons account", the reason of wanting to have separate accounts on projects you're engaged with may be enough. On DE-WP (my home Wiki), such a request for any kind of voluntary block (barring previous misconduct) is usually granted no questions asked, but that is only a local custom that is not assured to exist on other Wikipedias. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:42, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
But the problem with even a voluntary block is that there are several things you are barred from if you have an account blocked on any wiki, most notably use of The Wikipedia Library. - Jmabel ! talk 18:45, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
I have had this account for almost twenty years. I would not be as stupid as to get it banned by trying to circumvent rules with the alternate account, participate in edit warring, etc. It would be my intention solely to use it for uploading photographs to the Commons and nothing more. Editor510 (talk) 07:36, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
Imagine the following fictional example. You're logged in Commons to check and add files to your uploads. A third person edited a file description, including a link to e.g. the EN-WP. For whatever reason, curiosity is enough, you follow this link and are now on EN-WP with your Commons account. If you forget this fact in the heat of the moment and do some edits that you would usually do with your Wikipedia account, like participating in a discussion where you were involved previously with your main pseudonym, you've most likely already run afoul of the en:WP:SOCK policy, and that's without doing stuff like edit warring. The bare minimum would certainly be an overt and clear declaration of the relationship between these accounts, maybe even going as far as to write it directly into the account name ("Editor510 as file uploader" for instance, that should not be against prohibitions of impersonification as you're the legitimate name user). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:23, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
@Editor510 i also use an account solely for uploading files (for easy record keeping and statistical analysis, etc.). i too dont want to accidentally use that account to do any other editing.
so i happened to make myself a script https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/590728-wikinoedit just now. it removes all edit buttons but doesnt interfere with uploadwizard.
maybe it's useful for you. if you dont want it in the form of external js but mediawiki user js (to install in common.js) i can also make it now. RoyZuo (talk) 15:01, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

PNG transparency question

This is about a photo not fine for Commons but PD-enough for English Wikipedia, I hope that's fine. I uploaded en:File:Evil Neuro logo.png, which is a png with white text and a transparent background. As such, most of it appears invisible. I've figured out I can do class=bg-transparent to make it work in dark mode, but I haven't figured out how to do so while in light mode. Any thoughts? 1brianm7 (talk) 17:15, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

@1brianm7 you might get better help asking at com:gli or maybe any mainstream llm ai. RoyZuo (talk) 14:44, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
I'll guess that a thin, light gray line around the white is going to be your best move. - Jmabel ! talk 20:28, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
Thanks both for your advice. I was able to jerry-rig a black background, and while it's a tad ugly, I think it's good enough until someone else complains. 1brianm7 (talk) 20:42, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

Ancestor's name

I have the crop section of a document page where our ancestor name is written. I have the full page but I prefer crop section because it consist the name.and it is in old hindi (kaithi) language, i already uploaded it to AI and they already give the name but they said that that's our 60percent estimation. And I take the name by AI through apply jailbreak, not by rasier way or direct. And I already enchace that section because it not clear also. So, can you extract the name is I upload that crop section?

this is the land document. Dhansulal (talk) 05:03, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

@Dhansulal: Hi, and welcome. Is this about File:Land document.jpg? What does "I take the name by AI through apply jailbreak, not by rasier way or direct" mean?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:46, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
Also, "can you extract the name is I upload that crop section?" is incomprehensible. Could you try rewording, or possibly write that in a language you can write with more precision if that is easier for you? Hindi would be fine, we have Hindi-speakers who could follow through. - Jmabel ! talk 21:44, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

Adding Photo for Rudolf Jettel

I have a portrait of Rudolf Jettel, photographer unknown, from my family collection, dated circa 1935 by a family member's inscription on the reverse (believed to be added years after the photo was taken). I'm wondering if it would fall under Austria's anonymous work provision. JohnRosenfeld07 (talk) 17:48, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

It may well fall under Austria's anonymous work provision but there will be still a problem with USA copyright. Ruslik (talk) 20:31, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
@JohnRosenfeld07: Under U.S. law, if it is truly anonymous, and has never been published, it is protected for 120 years from creation. But it would be acceptable to upload a low-resolution version as non-free work directly in the English-language Wikipedia (without involving Commons) to illustrate that article. Also, given that its copyright has expired in Austria, it would be OK to upload directly in the German-language Wikipedia, even at the highest available resolution. That would allow it someday to be moved to Commons (in 2056). - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

Image of Game

Hi, I want to add an image my friend took of Welcome to the Dark Place's map-making feature. He scrubbed the image of most identifiable locations from the game to avoid spoilers. Is this okay to upload on Wikipedia, or would I have to reach out to the development team?

Thank you! Sunfish93Swimmer (talk) 01:52, 3 August 2026 (UTC)

@Sunfish93Swimmer: I'm not familiar with the game, but I don't see how such an image could be both identifiable and not include copyrighted content. So, yes, you'd probably need a license from the company. If you are going to pursue that, please read COM:THIRD, especially the part about what not to do. - Jmabel ! talk 04:39, 3 August 2026 (UTC)

Right to use the photos for machine training

Hi, I am a uni student and I am just wondering whether the photos here can be used for training a machine model as the license agreement is not clear on this. ~2026-42879-04 (talk) 01:20, 4 August 2026 (UTC)

Different photos here have different licensing considerations. Anything that is in the public domain, or CC-0, or uses any of the other PD-release like license tags should be fine. Anything that is not almost certainly is not, since the offered licenses are nearly all about reuse with attribution; they do not waive other rights, and it is hard to imagine how training a machine model could give appropriate attribution.
Also note: except where there is exactly one licensing-related tag on a page, it may be very difficult for a machine to determine the overall licensing status. For example, it might be an offer that you can use any of a number of different licenses ("multi-licensing", as in File:Hanul Manuc Courtyard 2.jpg—in this case, none of the licenses are PD or equivalent, I can't offhand find an example of that in multi-licensing) but it also might be a situation like File:Roman portrait head of a man of rank - Staten Island Museum - two views.jpg, explaining that the underlying artwork is PD, but the photograph is CC-BY-SA 4.0. So unless you are going to do something quite sophisticated, I'd recommend you stick to things that do have a PD (or PD-like) tag and do not have some other license tag. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 4 August 2026 (UTC)

Is there a proper name for the type of columns and capitals in this image? Hallo!

COM:TOO Germany) immer ein Graubereich bleibt.

- Jmabel ! talk 20:49, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

Uncontroversial withdrawn userscript

Is there a userscript or gadget or something which allows a non-admin to quickly close a deletion request as withdrawn when uncontroversial? – Howardcorn33 (💬) 16:09, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

Is adding {{Delh}}, {{Delf}} and a reasoning about the closure too much to do manually? Revert the DR addition on the file page by whatever means you're finding the most convenient (including rollback if available and when you're dealing with a DR opened by yourself), consider adding {{Kept}} on the file talk page and you're done. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:23, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
It can get a bit tedious when dealing with deletion requests regarding multiple files. – Howardcorn33 (💬) 16:25, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
Ah yes, mass DR aren't handily treated that way. But I think that any admin patrolling the DR lists would act upon a mention like "I would like to retract the DR" and use the DelReqHandler on the case. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:53, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

Can I use Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 images images to train a machine learning model for a university projec?

Hello,

I am a university student working on a non-commercial research project that identifies types of transportation hubs in Victoria, Australia.

We would like to download photographs of Victorian railway stations from Wikimedia Commons that are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence and use them as training data for a computer-vision classification model.

Our model will analyse visual features and classify an input image as a type of transportation hub. It will not generate or reproduce photographs.

Could someone please clarify the following:

Does this licence permit us to use these images as machine-learning training data?

How should we provide appropriate attribution to each photographer?

Would the ShareAlike condition apply to the trained model or model weights?

If we publish only our research findings and code without redistributing the images, would the ShareAlike condition apply?

Can we publish a list of image links and attribution details without redistributing the images?

Should we check and record the licence displayed on every individual image page?

The images will be used only for academic research.

Thank you for your help. ---.0tin06.--- (talk) 07:20, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

My understanding is that there's a lot of open questions that haven't been settled about how to properly do attribution with machine learning models, both technically and legally. (And that's not even getting into that every jurisdiction has different law and precedents.) I don't think you're likely to get a clear "yes, that's okay" or "no, that's not okay" from anyone, at least not without paying for actual legal advice (and even then you're probably just getting someone's opinion). In many jurisdictions it may be that the use you have planned counts as "fair use" even if the license wouldn't otherwise permit it, though that can be an even thornier question and doesn't even account for any moral issues you may have of wanting to respect the creator's wishes even if the law otherwise may allow for other uses. You may want to look at the recent Creative Commons blog post and the linked resources in it to get some ideas about what others are doing and some of the concerns involved. — PeterCooperJr (talk) 13:30, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

An aside: Anything from 1868 is in public domain now : not quite true, though in this case it should be fine, because a map would almost certainly be something that was published around the time it was created. But, for example, if a work from 1868 was first published 1931-2002, and didn't run afoul of certain U.S. copyright formalities requirements, it would still be copyrighted in the U.S. and (I just learned this one yesterday) if it was first published in the last 25 years, it could be copyrighted in Germany and several other EU counries. - Jmabel ! talk 22:30, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
  • @Oneroomschool: Yes, OK - The particular map you link to is fine. (Correct template for this particular map would be {{PD-US-expired}}.). They're not folders, they're categories. Files can be in many categories. NDL PDFs

We have many PDF files brought over from NDL, but these are generally scanned two pages to an image. Is there any restriction on modifying these files to be one page per image, like for some National Archives images? Should I create a new PDF? If so, should I mark the old PDF in some way? TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 18:20, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

@TE(æ)A,ea.: PDF is a bad format for images here, you might as well use png, and link with {{Extracted from}}/{{Image extracted}}.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:31, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
  • By image I meant scan image, that is, PDF page. See the file here; there are no images in the file. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 14:07, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
@TE(æ)A,ea.: Each page is an image of two pages of the original paper book, and can be separated out. Bearing in mind oos, I still suggest png or building a new PDF with just the single-paper-page content in preparation for Wikisource. "cleaned" would be an appropriate parenthetical for a suffix.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:27, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

Would I be able to upload a photograph from a government publication (Newfoundland) from 1966?

I have a photograph of the Herdman Collegiate school, taken from a 1966 book, "Newfoundland: Canada's Happy Province". From what I'm reading, Canadian Crown copyright works enter public domain 50 years after publication, however, I'm still not sure if the photograph can be uploaded, I'm not sure if the government held the copyrights for the photograph, and the book's copyright notice at the start says:

"Copyright © 1966 The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Designed by Hazell Sun Design Studio, and printed and bound by Galleon Printers Ltd, with additional binding by Dorstel Press Ltd (both members of Thomson Printers Ltd, a subsidiary of the British Printing Corporation Ltd.) Preparation, advertising and distribution by E.C. Boone Advertising Ltd, St John's, Newfoundland. Cover photograph of St John's by Peter Newbolt. Photography by Mr William Croke; Tootons Ltd; Garland Studio; Mr M.T. Schulstead; N. Squires Photogrpahy. Also through the courtesy of The Iron Ore Company of Canada; McNamars Construction of Newfoundland Ltd; Canadian National Railways; Newfoundland Labrador Power Commission; Rambler Mines Ltd; Advocate Mines Ltd; Crosbie and Company Ltd; Lundrigan's Construction Ltd; Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation; Newfoundland Light and Power Company Ltd; Department of Public Works of Canada; U.S. Air Force, Goose Air Base"

And no, it doesn't say who the photographer was on the photo I want to upload, so, what's the status of this? Would I be able to upload it or not? TechNerd22 (talk) 20:45, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

For the benefit of help deskers, the book is on archive.org at https://archive.org/details/newfoundland-canadas-happy-province/page/70 and the picture of Herdman Collegiate, then Corner Brook Regional High is on page 70. TSventon (talk) 01:17, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

wrong subjects

Could someone switch the names from the extracted photos here? (Keavy to Edele) I can't do it with a temp account https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edele_lynch_with_twin_sister_keavy_1998_2013-12-02_18-05.jpeg ~2026-43767-35 (talk) 22:38, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

Image upload

This is my first time uploading an image to Wikipedia and I’d like to make sure the image in question abides by the copyright rules and guidelines. The image is from Seaforces.org of an autocannon mounted to a vessel. I googled whether it would abide by the rules and it said no, so I’ve come here to ask to see if that’s correct. I’ll link the image source https://www.seaforces.org/wpnsys/SURFACE/Oto-Melara-Oerlikon-KBA-KBB-25-80-mm-gun.htm JohnKimblel (talk) 07:46, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

@JohnKimblel: unless there is a specific reason that an image is in the public domain, then you basically have to assume that everything less than 35 years old (and most things less than 95 years old) are copyrighted and would need a license. The only likely reason any of the photos on the site in question would be in the public domain is if they were originally taken by someone in the U.S. Navy, because all works by U.S. government employees created as part of their job are in the public domain. This site is about the U.S. Navy, but seems to give no information about the origin of any particular photo. You could use a reverse image search (e.g. Google Lens) and see if you can find the same photo clearly credited to someone in the Navy (or otherwise free-licensed) on some other site; otherwise, you are almost certainly out of luck.
You might want to read COM:THIRD, which is a guideline about uploading third-party materials to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

Deletion request

Hello. I'm posting this question in case someone can explain this situation to me. The user Omphalographer has requested the deletion of these files claiming there are out of scope:

All of these images (evening gowns on mannequins) were created with ChatGPT, and none of them used other images as visual references to avoid using copyrighted material, a detail explained on each file's page to prevent confusion. Only highly descriptive text was used to create these images, nothing more. Furthermore, all of these images have been used to illustrate articles, so they have an educational purpose. I would like to know why they should be deleted, as they do not violate copyright and have educational value. If there is no reason for their deletion, I would appreciate it if anyone interested would present their arguments in the corresponding discussion thread (at the bottom of the page, in the Files uploaded by Enciclopedia1993 topic). Thank you in advance for your help. Regards.Enciclopedia1993 (talk) 08:33, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

@Enciclopedia1993: (1) Any image created by ChatGPT used other images as visual references. It doesn't just magically know what the world looks like. (2) Most images created by artificial intelligence are out of Commons' scope and, if anything, we seem to be moving toward a stricter scope in that respect. (3) You say all of these images have been used to illustrate articles. Does that mean they are currently in use for articles on sister projects? If so, you might have a COM:INUSE argument for keeping them, though that might be a stretch if they were all added to those articles by the same person who uploaded them and they are on wikis with almost no community or articles which almost no one else has touched.
Also: these claim to be gowns worn by particular people at particular times, and they look photographic, which is potentially actively misleading. There is no documentation as to why they could reasonably be expected to resemble wha they claim to represent, especially because there is no indication of what prompts were given to ChatGPT. I would probably vote "delete" on just that basis. - Jmabel ! talk 20:45, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

Image content

Hi, Trying to up date my page with .jpeg content is this allowed as I tried and the files did not upload. regards Paul Baglan454 (talk) 09:00, 10 August 2026 (UTC)

@Baglan454: I have absolutely no idea (or, really, several contradictory ideas) what you mean by Trying to up date my page with .jpeg content. Are we talking about your user page on Commons? (I would guess not, because you don't seem to have started a user page here, and have no prior contributions here.) Your user page on some sister wiki? An article about you? Nor is the rest of this much clearer. The filter log does not show you with any failed uploads.
Let's start with the uploads: were you uploading with Special:UploadWizard on Commons, or by some other means? When the files "did not upload", did you get any error message? - Jmabel ! talk 20:57, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
That user has, at the time of writing, only 2 contributions globally: Special:CentralAuth/Baglan454. I don't think that the question is about any user page.
Did you work through the Commons:First steps and the en:Help:Introduction, @Baglan454?

Beatles sheet music covers

Hello everyone. There are quite a few images of sheet music covers and sleeves for Beatles songs composed solely of elements in the public domain, that is, uncopyrighted images, text, basic shapes, and in some cases logos. File:Polythene Pam sheet music.PNG, File:Piggies sheet music cover.jpg, File:Yer Blues sheet music cover.jpg, File:Her majesty.jpg are such examples. Recently, the sleeve for "I Want to Hold Your Hand" has been moved to the Commons exactly because it is constituted of a PD image, a PD logo, and basic text and shapes (it has been nominated for deletion but seems sure to stay). Should other such sheet music covers and sleeves be moved to the Commons? DannyRogers800 (talk) 05:10, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
