Does this really fall under "other instructed circulars issued by state organizations"? TansoShoshen (talk) 01:05, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Yes it is legit! It is formal issuance under , so, yes it may be considered as an official instruction Hwi.padam (talk) 01:32, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Alternatively, it can be interpreted as direct extraction from documents like this one, even as part of the seal, which is unlikely to be copyrighted due to it being explicitly registered by state authorities and part of the official documentation (either as the header logo or the seal). TL;DR this one can be understood as an official circular and formal issuance of guidance because it is the official website, and it can also be known as graphical extraction from multiple public document. Hwi.padam (talk) 01:44, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Hwi.padam In that 1st regard, the official portraits of HM Sihanouk, Sihamoni, and the Queen Mother have been deleted time and time again because consensus states that photos and lots of other graphical media weren't covered.
- The thing about the document though, interesting, I'll give it that. I'll reserve judgement until we get more opinions. TansoShoshen (talk) 02:36, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

Keep currently in use and removal is to be discussed by/at/with the respective site contributors, not here. There is no need to get such going as there is no need to remove this. we have actual pictures of Aphrodite
absurd statementthis looks like none of them
the image should be based on and look like the sculptures and contemporary art of Aphrodite I think so probably the file shouldn't be used or be improved first. Prototyperspective (talk) 09:48, 6 April 2026 (UTC)- Delete. Aphrodite was an important figure in Mediterranean religion, and thereafter continued to play roles in the art of Christian Europe (variously as a cautionary exemplar of pagan lasciviousness, allegorical or symbolic figure, allusion to the continent’s Classical heritage, and a simple provider of eroticism). This image bears no resemblance to any of these depictions and hence lacks educational value. It can’t even be used to show modern engagement with old themes, because it wasn’t the product of human intelligence. Also, what does “lucilai” mean? ManuelKomnenos (talk) 01:56, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

Comment I tend to agree. What is the educational purpose of this that would not be better served by a photo or painting? - Jmabel ! talk 05:50, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- The question is rather meaningless given that no painting that has a free-license exists on Commons afaik. If it exists, a high-resolution realistic image is to many or in many cases still preferred even if it was. Prototyperspective (talk) 08:46, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Keep subjective slightly-uncivil unconstructive POV derogatory term is not a valid deletion rationale. Not the most useful of picture but still could be the only high-res image of outdoor community dining on a table (rather than a blanket). Prototyperspective (talk) 08:47, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Because that’s an important topic that needs to be illustrated? Dronebogus (talk) 17:44, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Not super important. I thought it's a concept worth illustrating as being outdoors as well as social interaction are both healthy and it's super rare to see what's in the pic nowadays and notably there is no other free artistic illustration of it afaik (and no photo either but a photo is not always preferred). Prototyperspective (talk) 18:02, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Why do you always try to find a hypothetical use for [insert random low quality AI image] that requires the intersection of like six categories in a Venn diagram? It reminds me of how Strong Bad once said you can’t just make up some random crap no-one else will ever do and call it a world record. Dronebogus (talk) 22:18, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- It's a very reasonable very plausible usefulness case. It's more useful than about 80% of files on Commons I'd say if just considering that explanation but not the implementation. Well-being of humans doesn't seem to matter to you if you think that's an a strange explanation. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:31, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

- I removed them from Wikidata in my capacity as a long-term, regular Wikidata editor because they were unusably terrible. In fact I would remove them from the other wikis too if I spoke their respective languages, which I don’t. Dronebogus (talk) 16:42, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- Both Catalan and Basque Wikipedia, which are using these images, rely on Wikidata to load the images in their templates. As these are in use via Wikidata, removing them distorts this discussion. Theklan (talk) 07:22, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- That is their problem, not Wikidata’s. If you rely on Wikidata to fill out your infoboxes you are inherently at the mercy of independent local decisions on Wikidata. Wikidata does not, to my knowledge, have an INUSE equivalent that makes it a slave to other projects’ decisions. Dronebogus (talk) 03:39, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

This file is outdated and is not being used in any substantial way. A newer version of this file can be found at File:Map_of_the_world_by_the_US_Gov_as_of_2016.svg Connor Irwin (talk) 04:20, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Keep – this map is from 2021, so it's actually more up-to-date than Map of the world by the US Gov as of 2016.svg, even if the formatting isn't as good. The only reason we use the 2016 version on Wikipedia is that some editors disagreed with changes to US foreign policy in 2021. Generally speaking, I think it's conceivable that some will find this file useful, even in the presence of the new 2016 version. The fact that it's not currently used in any sister projects isn't by itself a reason for deletion. Justinkunimune (talk) 12:31, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

False authorship and license. The photo was originally uploaded to the Russian Wikipedia as non-free in 2014 - see ru:Файл:Лантанолания.jpg. The file in the Russian Wikipedia has a source that contains the image. GAndy (talk) 09:21, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- I agree that the "own work" claim is false, but it says that it was a cross-wiki upload from en-wiki, so I assume this was a mistake on the behalf of the uploader @GleisReis: when they uploaded the image from en-wiki, where it may have been correctly uploaded under a valid license (unfortunately this information is erased when the image is transferred to Commons). The image looks to me like it is one drawn by prolific paleoartist Dmitry Bogdanov @ДиБгд: , who has freely licensed many of his works to Commons, so perhaps they would be able to comment whether or not they are the creator of the image, and if it was ever uploaded to Wikipedia under a valid license to begin with? Hemiauchenia (talk) 14:52, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- In the English Wikipedia, this file is used in four articles. In Amniote, the image was added on December 10, 2023, and in the other three articles, it was added in 2026. The file was added to the articles after it was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. It did not replace the local file from the English Wikipedia. There is no information in the edit history of these articles that the local file existed and was used in the articles. I believe that the information when downloading "Cross-wiki upload from en.wikipedia.org" is also inaccurate, as there was no file in the English Wikipedia. GAndy (talk) 06:24, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- You seem to be correct. I can find no evidence of the Lanthanolania image ever being used on enwiki prior to GleisReis uploading it to Commons. It's hypothetically possible it was uploaded but never used, but I think that's unlikely. Hopefully GleisReis can clarify. Hemiauchenia (talk) 17:12, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

Files in Category:Spoken Wikipedia articles using English-language speech synthesis
If someone wants a machine voice synthesized text-to-speech recording of an Wikipedia article they can readily and easily do so simply by using the screen reading programs already built into their device or operating system
In addition the recordings created by Wikipedia's readers are virtually always guaranteed to be relevant and up-to date with current events and corrections while the majority of recordings here are either several years out of date or otherwise severely outdated compared to the current revision of the article they are trying to cover. Filling Commons with text-to-speech recordings is redundant busywork which accomplishes nothing except giving us a steady supply of low quality audio files with little to no practical use
Keep in mind Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia explicitly prohibits synthesized text-to-speech recordings which further cements just how useless all of these files truly are

- no, it's not easy
- these are useful, I often listen to them in my podcast audio player and tens of thousands of people are listening to these so these are useful to many – I find these some of the most useful files on Commons and they are what I currently use Commons on my smartphone for nearly exclusively
low quality audio files with little to no practical use
that's kind of disproven - these aren't just random screenreadings at low-quality but cutting edge voices and reading without the image captions or long tables etc and with abbreviations being read properly etc which required editing the scripts as well as some CSS things; (I described the process at the linked page)
Keep in mind Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia explicitly prohibits synthesized text-to-speech recordings
why would a particular WikiProject matter so much? That's just a particular WikiProject's idea and by the way there also is a early-stage WikiProject specifically about AI recordings which I think are of much more listenable quality than the time-wasting unscalable manually-created audios as those are not professional audiobook narratorsotherwise severely outdated compared to the current revision of the article they are trying to cover
the idea is to have some tool update these periodically and what you said applies to most (~80%) of files in Category:Spoken Wikipedia much more, these are often included in the Wikipedia article even when they are 10 years old, not even speaking of the unused Spoken Wikipedia recordings on Commons which are often older (many from around 2007), so this is an improvement to the current situation even while not perfect, not a disimprovement just because these are outdated by 2 years- these are also useful as demos as what is possible, eg part of wishes in the Community Wishlist
- all but the ʻOumuamua.mp3 and Why is BFDI not on Wikipedia.mp3 (the policy is now named differently and base situation has changed) and the Text to speech rendering of major depression text on Wikipedia.ogg file are COM:INUSE
- Prototyperspective (talk) 10:07, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- i feel like despite point 3, it should be able to be easily automated. wikipedia does have an api to get the wikitext, and perhaps abbreviations could have their own markup corresponding to the html "abbr" element. hints for automatic readings should probably be inside the wikitext, so that readings can be produced with whatever cutting-edge voice you want, any speed, with those script edits, and also automatically with the latest version of the text. perhaps with the semantic web, any web page could automatically be converted to an audio file Acrions (talk) 19:46, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- I have it in my plans to look into this. Currently a browser addon is used to hide HTML elements with certain classes and then I manually edit the resulting text to fix abbreviations such as "WHO" pronounced as "who" to "World Health Organization". These audios are partly a demo of what's possible. The variety of recordings enable people to find sth they're interested in so they can understand the value of this and give it a genuine try.
- Additionally, it could take quite long until somebody else or I implements this if it's currently possible at all. If you're interested in helping with that you'd be very welcome. One major issue is that if this gets widely available this would cause a lot of API requests to those AI voices servers so they may eg block things; and it currently takes about 1 minute of waiting before the result is finished and you can listen to it. You're talking in hypotheticals and ideals. If you can implement what you're describing, please do. More people may see value in this if they can listen to Wikipedia articles at good quality right now. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:23, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

- I don't think there is any policy against storing this type of file on wikicommons and you did not mention any. The rules of WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia from the English Wikipedia are not relevant here.
- From what I can tell, you are not opposed to storing these files on wikicommons but to how they are used in different places. In this context, a deletion request seems to be misguided. For example, you nominated File:Political philosophy - lead section.ogg for deletion. This file is used on a userscript explanation page to showcase how the userscript can read text aloud. Are you saying that this is not acceptable? Or was your deletion nomination of this file unintentional? Phlsph7 (talk) 11:41, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

- We dont have to. Because virtually all Ebook devices sold today already have that functionality Trade (talk) 14:10, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- I don't have an ebook reader. Lots of people don't have such, especially in poorer countries but even in quite affluent ones. Additionally, you apparently didn't bother to read my prior comment which briefly explains how this is different than screenreaders (explained with more details at the linked page) and this is key to all of this. Prototyperspective (talk) 14:41, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment this strikes me as an "I don't like it" nomination. @Trade: is there a specific policy against these that you can cite, or are you making a "new" argument that all AI speech versions of Wikipedia articles are out of scope, or are these particular files somehow problematic whereas there might be other AI speech versions of Wikipedia articles that you believe would be in scope? - Jmabel ! talk 17:32, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Keep I agree that there are problems with using text to speech, Google text to speechhas trouble reading tabular info and will just start reading the numbers and also read the picture captions. I am sure it will improve to ignore tables of numbers in the future. --RAN (talk) 19:27, 7 April 2026 (UTC)

Gestumblindi (talk) 18:37, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

- LuvsMG481, this toy car appears to be drivable which makes it a utilitarian object. Its performance and range are undoubtedly crap (but slightly better than a tricycle), but it is utilitarian. If e.g. the windscreen wipers are not functional (which I can't tell from this image) you could argue that those parts are purely artistic, but that would likely be de minimis.
For this image in particular, I don't immediately see how it could be used educationally as it doesn't show the whole thing or any particular aspect. The focus is on the kid polishing the headlight. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:16, 10 April 2026 (UTC)

Delete. A use of an AI-retouched image in a book, used to illustrate the person depicted in the original image, is not coverage of the image - it's coverage of the person. Omphalographer (talk) 06:29, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- This image within the project's scope. The person's face has not been altered Al. The image formatting complies with the project guidelines. The original image is provided in the information section. The original and colorized image was published in a reputable source (with ISBN No). {{AI upscaled}} template is specified. There are no violations. The image complies with COM:AIP rule.
This serves three purposes: it demonstrates that the file in question is an alteration rather than a new generation, it allows others to verify that the source file is available under a free license, and it gives anyone using the altered image an easy way to find the original and make an informed decision about the quality of the alteration.

brother, what are you talking about? It’s an AI colorization of some dude from the past. There is no “science” here. There is no distortion here.
The image is a robot guessing the colors and missing details of a B&W photo. How do you know there is no distortion? The image is published in a history book.
No, it is used on the cover of the book. Besides not knowing anything about the book itself to vouch for its reliability the cover is a decorative aspect of the work that could’ve been designed without the input of the author or anyone with expert credentials. It is not part of the content of the book. Dronebogus (talk) 12:48, 14 April 2026 (UTC)- Dear Ms Dronebogus! The bibliographic description states that the image was processed by uniformologist and historian Kirill Sergeyevich Vasiliev. He is a recognized expert and has an article about him in the encyclopedia of uniformologists. (You can also see a list of Vasiliev's scientific publications.) - Where suitable freely licensed photos of specific facial expressions exist, they are preferred. For some nuanced emotions (e.g., schadenfreude), such images are limited, so I supplement with genAI-generated examples. The limitations of all images are instructional: we discuss each image (real and generated) to consider how reliably facial cues signal emotion and the difficulty of inferring internal states from expressions. An image need not be "perfect" to be educational.
- If a stronger, freely licensed example of schadenfreude is available, please point to it. Previously I used File:Smug face cropped.jpg, but a more realistic image would be preferable. -- Jtneill - Talk 06:41, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- File:Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala - Regreso al convento.jpg is a perfect example of Schadenfreude. The issue is that Schadenfreude is a contextual emotion based entirely on the reaction (happiness/amusement/satisfaction) another’s emotion (unhappiness/suffering), not an emotion that can be conveyed through a person’s face alone. Even the AI image relies on implicit context (the woman is smirking at something schadenfreude-inducing on her phone) but that makes it ambiguous (maybe she’s just smug about being right about something?). The painting, however, clearly shows how the other monks are taking pleasure in the misfortune of the monk with a donkey. Dronebogus (talk) 16:57, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
- The subject is facial expressions, which themselves are very far from conveying the meaning of the emotion but that's not the subject so you just confirm the point I made below. No need to delete this. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:24, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

The licenses "PD-US-expired" and "PD-old-70" are surely wrong: In the book where the image was taken from (see the link under "source"), the author of the book himself is listed as photographer of this image (see online version, subscription required; see alternatively the "List of illustrations" on p. IX of the print version). This is w:Bertrand Lançon who still lives and seems to have given no consent in the use of his photograph here. DerMaxdorfer (talk) 20:59, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose after correcting the tag. Per File:Narmer Palette.jpg, File:Peribsen.jpg, Indian princess and Columbia.jpg, File:PulitzerGlass.jpg, and many other objects. The actual creator of the piece died over 1600 years ago. Taking a photo of it does not give you copyright over it. Jon698 (talk) 20:01, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- That puts the inscription itself into public domain, not the perspectival photograph of the threedimensional object taken by a contemporary photograph/researcher. Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Art (copies of) ("If the 3D artwork is old enough to be in the public domain, you may upload a photograph you have taken yourself. If the photograph was taken by somebody else, you need the photographer’s permission, since the photograph is copyright-protected, despite depicting art that is not.") normally applies to ancient sculptural objects like altars, even when the focus is on one single side (that is carved as well!). If the picture had been taken frontally, one might argue that it is only a simple, technical reproduction of a text in public domain, but this isn't the case here as well. (If the file isn't deleted, you should add categories to make it usable.) DerMaxdorfer (talk) 13:21, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

Replacing Speedy Deletion with Normal Deletion Request. Speedy Deletion notice claimed footage that was published under creative commons was stolen, however I have reason to suspect that isnt the case, as the only footage thats similar between the two is the dash-cam from the entire tour, the rest of the footage is not seen in the original source. Delete – I took some time to compare the video I had linked (this one) to the source video within the image, and the camera angles and sounds appeared to line up with various moments within the original video throughout the video used as the source for the still, which leads me to believe that it is stolen from the copyrighted video. AI slop. Dronebogus (talk) 23:32, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- I noticed your recent removal of an image from a Wikiversity project page.
- Would you be able to clarify the reasoning for this change? In particular, I would appreciate understanding what is meant by “AI slop” in this context and which policies or guidelines inform this action and deletion request.
- May I also suggest discussing image removals from project pages in advance (unless the files have been deleted on Commons)? This would help maintain shared understanding and coordination among contributors. -- Jtneill - Talk 00:50, 10 April 2026 (UTC)

I needed this to explain something to someone. It is no longer needed. It is a screenshot of an old Python script that I was playing around with at the time. Polygnotus (talk) 23:47, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
