Unused Taxon Galleries?

Hey, noticing that there are a lot of Taxon Galleries that are unmaintained, don't have much content and are in far worse shape the the Category Pages: https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=26645568 -- that query looks at small taxon Galleries (less than 500 bytes and unedited since 2015). Redirecting them to the categories would be far more useful for readers. I am kindof new to working on the taxon stuff on Commons, where would be a good place to try to reach concensus on something like that?Sadads (talk) 13:14, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Taxasource for taxon pages, World Catalog Opiliones

Could you possibly help or just advise on getting the 'World Catalog Opiliones' recognised on the Taxasource page.

The online version is here. https://wcolite.com/. It's a bit glitchy on that interface still, but the content is now essentially complete and its exporting to the other big biodiversity databases. If interested to help me get it linked, a key thing maybe it doesnt present any unique taxon ID on any taxon, but that doesn't seem to be a problem for linking with others, e.g. the catalog for spiders, WSC

I.e. under Template:Taxasource see for example Template:WSC family. [see also species:Template:WSC]

Hello Sjl197

First work is to create the wcolite template(s) (sometimes we have to create multiple templates for each rank. Here I am not sure it is needed)

I looked a bit at https://wcolite.com/. I coudn't any way to create a url jumping directly to a taxon.

So I don't know how to create those template(s)

Then we could modify Template:Taxasource to manage wcolite.

@Liné1: Thanks for a viewpoint, i'd seen the use of specific ID numbers on several other templates (indeed not displayed on WCO taxon pages, but do exist on the backend - they're involved in static exports, e.g. ID 328805. [https://www.checklistbank.org/dataset/2256/name/328805 Catalog of life] Using exports to somewhere seems like a potential work around, but Catalog of life are in process of changing their setup, so i'm not keen on using that one. I mistakenly thought the existing "Template:WSC" setup avoided such ID's to pull direct from WSC - but i think i now the problem of that way also. WCO doesn't display any custom URLs on each taxon page (whereas WSC does with the taxon names). Hence no visible custom URL to jump to particular taxa through the front end of WCO - i think it exists but just hidden from users! I'll talk to them about how things could change to allow external linkage to specific taxon pages. Thanks for feedback on this. Sjl197 (talk) 16:45, 17 June 2025 (UTC)
