Account policy
I've recently had the thought that I'd like to upload a few photos I've taken to Wikimedia Commons, but I'd rather they not be tied to this account name as I've had this account since I was a kid and there are a lot of embarrassing edits from twenty years ago. As far as I can tell, sockpuppetry is permitted as long as you're not doing it for abusive reasons, but I wanted to check that this was something I could do before I break the rules. Editor510 (talk) 14:18, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Editor510: The simplest way would be to stop doing new work under this account and start a new, different account. (You could still use this one if responding to matters related to your old uploads, etc., just keep the new account out of those.) You could start a new account and continue to operate both accounts, but it is definitely harder to keep from involving both in the same matters than if you essentially drop the old one.
- In short, you are allowed to have two active accounts, but the more active they both are, the harder not to break rules. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. I don't think I've ever uploaded anything to Commons under this account name. I only use this account name for my Wikipedia edits. I'd want to create a separate account solely for uploading to Commons. -- Editor510 (talk) 08:27, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Editor510: please bear in mind that any account is usable for any Wikimedia project (it's the effect of the single-user login), so, even if you intend to have a "Wikipedia account" and a "Commons account", both will be usable on all projects anyway. It's upon you to avoid breaking sockpuppet rules on other projects (I think that EN may be rather strict, there). A possible solution could be to ask a friendly admin for a voluntary block on projects you do not intend to use e.g. your "Commons account", the reason of wanting to have separate accounts on projects you're engaged with may be enough. On DE-WP (my home Wiki), such a request for any kind of voluntary block (barring previous misconduct) is usually granted no questions asked, but that is only a local custom that is not assured to exist on other Wikipedias. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:42, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- But the problem with even a voluntary block is that there are several things you are barred from if you have an account blocked on any wiki, most notably use of The Wikipedia Library. - Jmabel ! talk 18:45, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- I have had this account for almost twenty years. I would not be as stupid as to get it banned by trying to circumvent rules with the alternate account, participate in edit warring, etc. It would be my intention solely to use it for uploading photographs to the Commons and nothing more. Editor510 (talk) 07:36, 31 July 2026 (UTC)
- Imagine the following fictional example. You're logged in Commons to check and add files to your uploads. A third person edited a file description, including a link to e.g. the EN-WP. For whatever reason, curiosity is enough, you follow this link and are now on EN-WP with your Commons account. If you forget this fact in the heat of the moment and do some edits that you would usually do with your Wikipedia account, like participating in a discussion where you were involved previously with your main pseudonym, you've most likely already run afoul of the en:WP:SOCK policy, and that's without doing stuff like edit warring. The bare minimum would certainly be an overt and clear declaration of the relationship between these accounts, maybe even going as far as to write it directly into the account name ("Editor510 as file uploader" for instance, that should not be against prohibitions of impersonification as you're the legitimate name user). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:23, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

If I upload a picture that I have previously uploaded to another site, should I put the site as source?
I have been planning to upload some images that I have taken that I have previously uploaded to Inaturalist. However, I'm planning to upload higher resolution versions than Inaturalist has (as Inat limits image dimensions to 2048 pixels). Should I put corresponding Inaturalist observation as a source? Or if not, can or should I link to the observation some other way? Nyrkes (talk) 18:18, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Nyrkes: Thank you for contributing! I think since you are the photographer and you are uploading a higher resolution version than what is available on iNaturalist, you should put "own work" ({{Own}}) as the source. You can then link the photo to your iNaturalist observation using {{INaturalist}} (see example at File:Sympetrum obtrusum, Female 01.jpg). I also recommend you create your userpage and link/mention your iNaturalist profile, and likewise update your iNaturalist profile to link to your Wikimedia profile, to make it clear to others that you're the same person. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 19:04, 29 July 2026 (UTC)
Hello, inquiry about book cover uploadings
Hi! I am new to Wikipedia and trying to make a draft about a book. How can I upload a book cover into Wikimedia Commons so that I can add in Wikipedia draft? I only use it for the purpose of illustration for a wiki draft, therefore I will commit to Fair Use. ABookWormmm (talk) 03:38, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- @ABookWormmm: If you are using it on a fair use basis, then it is not allowed on Commons, nor in an English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) draft. Commons only allows "free" files, not fair use. en-wiki has that same policy for draft articles, but if your article is accepted, then you could upload the cover to en-wiki (not to Commons) under their policy on non-free content. See Inherent Vice and File:Inherent_vice_cover.jpg for a good example of doing that correctly. - Jmabel ! talk 04:01, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, Jmabel, for your response. First of all, let me explain. The contest I'm referring to is called https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2026. A few days ago, I uploaded several files to the gallery, which I believe I did successfully. However, when I went to the contest gallery, where all the entries should be published, mine didn't appear. That's why I'm asking. I've checked several links on the site, but nothing explains what happened. And when I try to re-upload one of these images to my profile, it says a copy is already there, so I can't upload the same image again. Please let me know if I've explained your answer clearly. Thank you very much. Alfredo Olivares Bueno (talk) 22:42, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
Wikimedia. No Wikimedia images are displayed to me.
Hello. I have faced an error today: no images within Wikimedia (including country flags etc.) are shown to me, neither when I use my PC nor when I use my phone (the Internet connection providers are different). All the other images, on other Internet pages, are shown to me without any difficulty. I have already "cleaned" my browser cache, it does not help. Is this an internal error in Wikimedia? if an get an image off of getty images or an old published magazine am i able to use that or nah? Sonia Rozanova (talk) 23:04, 30 July 2026 (UTC)
- Commons requires that all files must be 1.) of some educational value (which is very broadly construed and most images you could plausibly use for an educational purpose are fine) and 2.) either acceptably licensed or in the public domain. Note that the latter applies to both American law and also the law of wherever the work was created if that's not America. Most images from Getty will not meet criterion #2. Many images from magazines published before 1931 will (all material published before 1931 is in the public domain in the United States). Unfortunately, determining if something is in the public domain can be tricky. See the Hirtle chart at the beginning of Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States. - @Suryaram Vairakkannu: However, in terms of it being clear that the photos are really yours, uploading with accurate EXIF data is almost always a good idea. If you plan to edit a photo, I always recommend first uploading the version straight from the camera, then overwriting that with your preferred version. See File:Waterside Plaza and Con Ed East River Generating Station from the East River 01.jpg for an example where I did that just a few hours ago.
- (Also: I assume that by "raw files" you mean "JPEGs straight from a digital camera", not "RAW format"; Commons does not accept RAW files.) - Jmabel ! talk 01:46, 31 July 2026 (UTC)

PNG transparency question
This is about a photo not fine for Commons but PD-enough for English Wikipedia, I hope that's fine. I uploaded en:File:Evil Neuro logo.png, which is a png with white text and a transparent background. As such, most of it appears invisible. Uploading a traced image
I traced an svg as a replacement for the svg that is already posted on wikimedia. It is more detailed, and that's why I would like to replace the current one with mine. I cannot directly upload the change, and (IIUC) need to go through the "Upload Wizard" first. The problem is that I do not know what to choose in the "Release rights" step. Could anyone guide me on which options to choose when uploading? Thanks for help in advance!
Dates for SMU scans of Les Travaux Publics de la France
Many scans of Les Travaux Publics de la France have been categorized under "1883 in [place]", "1883 photographs of [place]" or similar, seemingly based on their file descriptions, which often originate from the Southern Methodist University and contain the claim "Date: 1883" without elaboration. However in two cases, Gare de Lorient and Gare d'Orléans / Gare d'Austerlitz, I've found other copies of the same photos that give earlier dates (here and here). It seems that 1883 is only the date of publication of the compilation and not necessarily the date of photographic capture. This is further supported by file descriptions from the Rijksmuseum, which state "ca. 1873 - in of voor 1883", so in or before 1883 with their guess being around 1873 (although that still hasn't entirely prevented categorization under 1883).
My questions then:
- How should the file descriptions be modified (if at all) to discourage users from believing that the photos were definitely taken in 1883?
- Are there tools that would make editing the file descriptions and categorizations as necessary (from 1883 to 19th Century) easier here? Is writing a custom bot routine the main option? I guess Gadget-ACDC could at least automate the structured data part?
Astro.furball (talk) 01:15, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Astro.furball: partial answer here. Changing from "1883" to "19th Century" when we know 1883 is the latest possible date would not be a good idea. Even in the unlikely event that these could be as early as 1800, you would still do better with {{other date|between|1800|1883}} (which produces "between 1800 and 1883"), but more likely you can say something like {{other date|between|{{circa|1870}}|1883}} (which produces "between circa 1870 and 1883"), or something even more precise. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- With the choice of 19th century I was thinking more of inflexible concerns such as categorization or the main value for the structured data property "date of inception" (though the latter can be qualified) where the choices are the year, the decade, or the century. But thanks for the idea anyways, that should be useful for the file description. Photography seems to essentially be a 19th century invention so that provides a higher lower bound, and I would guess the book mostly features projects that had been finished in the preceding few decades which should constrain the dates further. Even more work for me now though :P Astro.furball (talk) 16:13, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- In terms of exactly how something should be modified, it would help a lot if you could ask about a specific file (or 2-3 files if there are issues that no one file would illustrate). Then presumably you can extrapolate, or ask specific questions. - Jmabel ! talk 06:18, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- Let's take the first image in the category, featuring the Aqueduc de Montreuillon, which most sources in a cursory search say was completed in 1843 (though one says that finishing touches were quickly done in 1844), and which looks worn in the photo so perhaps it was taken during renovations years after that. It's in the category "1883 in Nièvre"; it should probably be moved up two categories to "Nièvre in the 19th century" absent better evidence. In the {{information}} template the description field contains "Date: 1883". I was unsure how these kinds of descriptions sourced from another repository should be corrected, more specifically for example whether I should preserve the information as much as possible and only add a parenthetical note of clarification or something. And a bot added 1883 as the date of inception to the structured data based on Flickr metadata, which is then reflected in the "Date" field of the Summary box. Astro.furball (talk) 16:38, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Astro.furball: We basically want to provide the most accurate information that we can for our users. It is also worth noting and explaining (as part of the description) where we have discrepancies from a GLAM that was the source. If the GLAM gave a non-trivial (but erroneous) description, then it makes sense to do something like what I did in File:"J.L. Luckenbach " in Elliott Bay, ca. 1910 - DPLA - a38ea53f6c9e5ea668168450292db6a5.jpg. I hope that helps.
- You might find User:Jmabel/Final draft of talk for WikiConference North America 2023 interesting; it is precisely about dealing with errors by GLAMs. Some of the file pages have since been updated because the GLAM in question integrated my critique. - Jmabel ! talk 23:54, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
I uploaded image, but it's author hasn't yet sent copyright permission letter
I have just uploaded this image File:Antony Byrne.jpg Its author sent it to me and agreed to share it with the condition that I credit her as the source. She hasn't yet sent her copyright permission letter to the official email of Wikimedia Commons. Where do I put a "pending permission" tag? For how long can that image stay with the tag until the author sends her email letter? Can someone help me add that tag in the right place? Kate Patskevich (talk) 00:44, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- The {{Permission pending}} notice is already in place all right, nothing needs to be done. The image will stay for IIRC 30 days since upload. If it gets deleted after that grace period, it can get restored when the permission is processed. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 01:01, 2 August 2026 (UTC)

Ancestor's name
- I have the crop section of a document page where our ancestor name is written. I have the full page but I prefer crop section because it consist the name.and it is in old hindi (kaithi) language, i already uploaded it to AI and they already give the name but they said that that's our 60percent estimation. And I take the name by AI through apply jailbreak, not by rasier way or direct. And I already enchace that section because it not clear also. So, can you extract the name is I upload that crop section?

- Also, "can you extract the name is I upload that crop section?" is incomprehensible. Could you try rewording, or possibly write that in a language you can write with more precision if that is easier for you? Hindi would be fine, we have Hindi-speakers who could follow through. - Jmabel ! talk 21:44, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
Adding Photo for Rudolf Jettel
I have a portrait of Rudolf Jettel, photographer unknown, from my family collection, dated circa 1935 by a family member's inscription on the reverse (believed to be added years after the photo was taken). I'm wondering if it would fall under Austria's anonymous work provision. JohnRosenfeld07 (talk) 17:48, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- It may well fall under Austria's anonymous work provision but there will be still a problem with USA copyright. Ruslik (talk) 20:31, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- @JohnRosenfeld07: Under U.S. law, if it is truly anonymous, and has never been published, it is protected for 120 years from creation. But it would be acceptable to upload a low-resolution version as non-free work directly in the English-language Wikipedia (without involving Commons) to illustrate that article. Also, given that its copyright has expired in Austria, it would be OK to upload directly in the German-language Wikipedia, even at the highest available resolution. That would allow it someday to be moved to Commons (in 2056). - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
Image of Game
Hi, I want to add an image my friend took of Welcome to the Dark Place's map-making feature. He scrubbed the image of most identifiable locations from the game to avoid spoilers. Is this okay to upload on Wikipedia, or would I have to reach out to the development team?
Thank you! Sunfish93Swimmer (talk) 01:52, 3 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Sunfish93Swimmer: I'm not familiar with the game, but I don't see how such an image could be both identifiable and not include copyrighted content. Right to use the photos for machine training
Hi, I am a uni student and I am just wondering whether the photos here can be used for training a machine model as the license agreement is not clear on this. ~2026-42879-04 (talk) 01:20, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- Different photos here have different licensing considerations. Anything that is in the public domain, or CC-0, or uses any of the other PD-release like license tags should be fine. Anything that is not almost certainly is not, since the offered licenses are nearly all about reuse with attribution; they do not waive other rights, and it is hard to imagine how training a machine model could give appropriate attribution.
- Also note: except where there is exactly one licensing-related tag on a page, it may be very difficult for a machine to determine the overall licensing status. For example, it might be an offer that you can use any of a number of different licenses ("multi-licensing", as in File:Hanul Manuc Courtyard 2.jpg—in this case, none of the licenses are PD or equivalent, I can't offhand find an example of that in multi-licensing) but it also might be a situation like File:Roman portrait head of a man of rank - Staten Island Museum - two views.jpg, explaining that the underlying artwork is PD, but the photograph is CC-BY-SA 4.0. So unless you are going to do something quite sophisticated, I'd recommend you stick to things that do have a PD (or PD-like) tag and do not have some other license tag. - Jmabel ! talk 04:49, 4 August 2026 (UTC)

Columns/capitals

Is there a proper name for the type of columns and capitals in this image? Hallo!
COM:TOO Germany) immer ein Graubereich bleibt.
{{PD-Spain-photo}}
- Jmabel ! talk 20:49, 6 August 2026 (UTC)

Uncontroversial withdrawn userscript
Is there a userscript or gadget or something which allows a non-admin to quickly close a deletion request as withdrawn when uncontroversial? – Howardcorn33 (💬) 16:09, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Is adding {{Delh}}, {{Delf}} and a reasoning about the closure too much to do manually? Revert the DR addition on the file page by whatever means you're finding the most convenient (including rollback if available and when you're dealing with a DR opened by yourself), consider adding {{Kept}} on the file talk page and you're done. Can I use Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 images images to train a machine learning model for a university projec?
Hello,
I am a university student working on a non-commercial research project that identifies types of transportation hubs in Victoria, Australia.
We would like to download photographs of Victorian railway stations from Wikimedia Commons that are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence and use them as training data for a computer-vision classification model.
Our model will analyse visual features and classify an input image as a type of transportation hub. It will not generate or reproduce photographs.
Could someone please clarify the following:
Does this licence permit us to use these images as machine-learning training data?
How should we provide appropriate attribution to each photographer?
Would the ShareAlike condition apply to the trained model or model weights?
If we publish only our research findings and code without redistributing the images, would the ShareAlike condition apply?
Can we publish a list of image links and attribution details without redistributing the images?
Should we check and record the licence displayed on every individual image page?
The images will be used only for academic research.
Thank you for your help. ---.0tin06.--- (talk) 07:20, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- My understanding is that there's a lot of open questions that haven't been settled about how to properly do attribution with machine learning models, both technically and legally. (And that's not even getting into that every jurisdiction has different law and precedents.) I don't think you're likely to get a clear "yes, that's okay" or "no, that's not okay" from anyone, at least not without paying for actual legal advice (and even then you're probably just getting someone's opinion). In many jurisdictions it may be that the use you have planned counts as "fair use" even if the license wouldn't otherwise permit it, though that can be an even thornier question and doesn't even account for any moral issues you may have of wanting to respect the creator's wishes even if the law otherwise may allow for other uses. You may want to look at the recent Creative Commons blog post and the linked resources in it to get some ideas about what others are doing and some of the concerns involved. — PeterCooperJr (talk) 13:30, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
OK to Use Clipping from 1868 Map?

- An aside:
Anything from 1868 is in public domain now
: not quite true, though in this case it should be fine, because a map would almost certainly be something that was published around the time it was created. But, for example, if a work from 1868 was first published 1931-2002, and didn't run afoul of certain U.S. copyright formalities requirements, it would still be copyrighted in the U.S. and (I just learned this one yesterday) if it was first published in the last 25 years, it could be copyrighted in Germany and several other EU counries. - Jmabel ! talk 22:30, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Oneroomschool: Yes, OK - The particular map you link to is fine. (Correct template for this particular map would be {{PD-US-expired}}.). - They're not folders, they're categories. Files can be in many categories.
