Commons:INat2Wiki
Purpose
iNat2Wiki is a Flask app on toolforge that enables navigation by iNaturalist user, enabling identification and upload of openly licensed photos to Commons.
The iNat2Wiki extension for Chrome is outdated and does not currently work.
The Firefox add-on is available here.
Usage
iNat2wiki is an interface between Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, and iNaturalist.
It has 3 core functions:
- Ordering the contributions by rarity and checking their coverage on Wikipedia and sister projects via "User list" for users or "Project list" for iNaturalist projects
- Adding pictures of particular observations to commons via "Parse observation"
- Creating Wikipedia stubs (only available for the Wikipedia in Portuguese so far)
It is run and maintained in the context of WikiProject Biodiversity
Rebuild
As of May 2025, the tool is being rewritten using slightly-better practices, a project started at the Wikimedia Hackathon 2025. There is a tracking ticket on Phabricator .
The general goals of this new phase are:
- Provide a leaner, efficient tool that makes it easy for finding which iNat images are most critical to Wikimedia work
- Incorporate internationalization natively, supporting interfaces in multiple languages (at least pt, en and es, but with proper settings to grow easily)
- Better connect/integrate ideas from other tools/scripts connecting iNaturalist and Wikipedia
- Write the tool with collaboration in mind, so it is fun for people to engage, contribute code and give feedback
- Prepare good tests

- Separate the "inat2wiki" and the "taxon2wikipedia stub creation" into different things. For biology stub makers, there are many many different pieces of code out there. They belong together, but not on iNat2wiki.
