Please check work of a user

User:Dronebogus is a banned user (indefinitely) in en:WP. Now he may have satisfaction in deletion requests here?. I have seen it in this deletion request - has not read the withdrawn, understood rules, does not argue or answer. I have seen comment of User:Rhododendrites and looked in version history of Dronebogus... Thanks Wortulo (talk) 13:10, 17 May 2026 (UTC)

[responding to ping] We don't typically take action against people here based on what happened on another project, and requests for other people to do the work of checking someone's work are generally less helpful than actually checking someone's work and pulling together evidence. DB has been doing a lot of nominations of AI-generated images for deletion on Commons. Some wind up deleted, and some don't. My objection there is that he does not appear to be putting much effort into the nominations. That one is a good example, since taking a couple seconds either before nomination (to look at the file page) or after nomination (to look at the prior nomination) would've made clear the nomination rationale was incorrect. Regardless, we'll need evidence of a pattern to start a conversation. Rhododendrites talk |  13:28, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
Thx, I understand. Im not so familiar with the rules here. But this thoughtless behaviour, which goes clearly against the deletion guidelines, can also cause frustration among authors. Wortulo (talk) 13:34, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
I can testify that he blanked a DR, which likely shouldn't occur, even though I later did verify that the DR was bullshit
Another user then tagged it with {{SD|G1}}, and in doing so, accidentally tagged the entirety of Commons:Deletion requests/2026/05/17 for speedy deletion as gibberish; I reverted the DR to its original content Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 15:26, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
I had tagged it for speedy deletion because the page was empty, this was wrong, I apologize. I will be much more careful when adding speedy deletion templates from now on. Mathopara (talk) 16:06, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
I didn't know that tagging the page would mark the whole deletion requests page for speedy deletion, it happened by accident. Mathopara (talk) 16:25, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
I know; don't worry :) Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 02:42, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
@Rhondodendrites: I have to go through a ton of AI images and there’s only a maximum amount of effort I will put into any edits involving AI content. Dronebogus (talk) 16:25, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
A scatter gun approach to DR's like this may land you a ban from DR's - I urge you to proceed with caution Gbawden (talk) 16:56, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
I have to - No, you do not. Rhododendrites talk |  16:58, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
I closed the DR as speedy keep per w:wp:snow. Obviously false rationale, widely in use (including use I would consider completely legitimate and reasonable for an AI image). Extremely unlikely to be deleted. If anyone objects to the proper closure I’m sorry. Dronebogus (talk) 16:23, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
@Dronebogus: is not how you close a speedy keep. Once a DR is opened it should be explicitly closed; in the event that it is pure vandalism (this wasn't, though I think it was wrong) you might mark it for deletion, but I personally would still close it explicitly as frivolous or vandalistic. If this is news to you that this is not "proper closure" then, yes, there is a problem.
Also: if you don't have the time to put some diligence into starting any given DR, then don't start that DR. Someone is going to have to take time to work out the situation. Insofar as possible, that work should be done by the nominator. - Jmabel ! talk 20:37, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
@Jmabel: That isn’t the speedy keep; the current version is. Dronebogus (talk) 20:39, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
@Wortulo: I’m sorry I nominated your file as an AIIP violation. Given the volume of AI files I review and nominate for deletion there are bound to be a few mistakes, and this is one of them. Dronebogus (talk) 20:48, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
Here is another "mistake" you did https://web.archive.org/web/20260302074021/https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_lady_exploding_star.png the file was not AI-generated and it was in use. Typical harassment. VisbyStar (talk) 08:19, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
VisbyStar, DroneBogus didn't claim it was AI, but it does appear to have been in use on the uploader's user page. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:27, 18 May 2026 (UTC)

We need to talk about yesterday's MOTD

Can we talk about this? For 24 hours our main page displayed a video that is nothing other than 40 seconds of a woman being pushed to the ground and brutally beaten by a man with a machete. Who is the woman? Who is the man? Who knows! We have speculation about what it might depict from an account that aggregates a bunch of videos, with claims of repressive forces and officers, but we have absolutely no other context for what we're seeing.

It was furthermore subject of an active deletion request at the time it ran on the main page (and, indeed, the linked release doesn't actually release this video and it's almost certainly not owned by the mass-reposting social media account it's sourced to).

I am not someone who needs the main page to be sanitized, but this betrays a complete abandonment of quality control at MOTD. Rhododendrites talk |  02:58, 18 May 2026 (UTC)

Deleted it due to copyright violation (7 days had passed since original nomination, which I also refuted in my close). Abzeronow (talk) 03:09, 18 May 2026 (UTC)

In just two days we have another video, with most of the same problems, set to appear on the main page again. Template:Motd/2026-05-20. In this case, the video is more obviously set during civil unrest, so to the extent COM:SCOPE/COM:DIGNITY might have been in question in the previous video, it's not here. However, it's still just as invalid a license and still just as wild a video to put on the main page. This may be useful in the appropriate Wikipedia article, but is not among the highest quality videos we have that's appropriate for the main page. PS: we appear to have 778 videos from the same account. We do need videos of Iranian government abuses during the protests (and in general), but this is not different from just uploading whatever we find on social media directly. Rhododendrites talk |  13:59, 18 May 2026 (UTC)

@Prototyperspective: - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:28, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites: according to the 1970 law protected are "Audio-visual works for stage or screen performances or for broadcasting by radio and television, irrespective of the way they are written, recorded or broadcast."
The CC license is questionable, but these videos may actually not be eligible for copyright protection. Even if they are recording for social media, "radio and television" is not the internet. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:34, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
I'll defer to others to work out details of Iranian copyright law in the DR/review. The issue I aimed to raise here is the combination -- that we ran an MOTD with dubious release, dubious provenance, an active DR, and questionable content -- it was not only selected for MOTD, but ran for a full day. selected on 30 March. 1.5 months are plenty of time to detect problems and swap it out.
i made Template:Motd/Upcoming for users to easily monitor motd 1 week ahead.
i personally dont see any problem with that video being motd. there was no copyright problem either as per current commons practice (which i dont agree with). RoyZuo (talk) 12:51, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
Agreed, that is an issue. Maybe we should systematically require a review by an experienced user? RoyZuo: it should be enough time, there just aren't enough eyes on the MOTD. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 12:57, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

Revdel and file redirect deletion request

Thanks/sorry. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 06:47, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
@Koavf: Revdel done. I don't understand your deletion rationale for the second file. Perhaps you should start a normal DR. - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
I hope that someday, someone will upload the original book as was published in 1929. If someone does that, the redirect name is a great name for that file, so I would like the redirect to be deleted so that someone (maybe me!) can use that title. If you want me to do a request still, I will. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 00:41, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
@Koavf: I would say cross that bridge when we come to it. It seems to me like a useful redirect for now. - Jmabel ! talk 03:05, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

I know we allow a lot of latitude for users editing their own talk page, but am I correct that a blocked user should not archive the bulk of their talk page, including the block notice? While I think we should have policy against that, I'm not sure we do, and I didn't want to revert against policy. - Jmabel ! talk 00:09, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

@Yousay813: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user. Usually when someone uploads a smaller jpg image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you created the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including original EXIF metadata. If you did not create the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the copyright holder license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:53, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
That image wouldn't meet the en.wp fair use criteria, not least because of the first criterion (No free equivalent) Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 06:46, 20 May 2026 (UTC)

License review needed

File:CUSCO SEÑOR DE LOS TEMBLORES 2016.webm is set to be MOTD by User:RoyZuo at Template:Motd/2026-05-28 but lacks a license review. There is no LR noticeboard. Please review the file before it becomes MOTD.
My personal take (not a license reviewer): the YT account seems fine, but DW should be considered. There's music (sounds like general fanfare, but maybe there are performance rights?), and the crucified man could potentially be considered a work of art. I'll leave it to a license reviewer to decide.
The file also lacks a description on the MOTD page, so I have no idea what I'm looking at. (this part could be solved by non-admins) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 12:55, 22 May 2026 (UTC)

✓ Done @Alexis Jazz: Hi, Why don't you get the license review right? You have the competence. Yann (talk) 12:58, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
Yann, perhaps one day. I already feel like I'm drowning. Please review File:Michelin Bib Gourmand Fishball Noodles - The Fishball Story 2019.webm as well, scheduled for Template:Motd/2026-05-29. It looks fine to me, sethlui.com links back to that YT channel and no obvious DW concerns. There is background music, but YT automatically removes CC licenses when it detects a copyright infringement, which it hasn't done in this case.
For Template:Motd/2026-05-30 we'll get File:Majuro Lagoon Part 1 Papa Mau And Makali`i Arrive In Majuro Lagoon.webm, also lacking LR. I haven't had time to look at this one yet. I'm just going over the upcoming MOTD and I'm not even done with this month yet. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:09, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
