Featured pictures are images from highly skilled creators that the Wikimedia Commons community has chosen as some of the highest quality on the site.

Simply click on the name of a category on this page to see the featured images for that subject. To reuse any images from Wikimedia Commons please see this guide.

There are currently 21,615 of such images in the Commons repository which is roughly 0.015% of the available images (141,525,472). All featured images are entered into our annual Picture of the Year competition. You may wish to browse the profiles of individual photographers, illustrators, and restorationists within the Commons community who have contributed a substantial portion of our featured pictures.

Images may be considered for featured status by being listed at Commons:Featured picture candidates, where the community will reach a consensus. An image only appears one time in the galleries. You can find all featured pictures in Category:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons.

Old candidates for featured pictures are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured pictures: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and current month.

Partially frozen Gurudongmar Lake, a glacial lake located to the north of the Himalayas in the northeast Indian state of Sikkim at an altitude of over 5,150 metres (16,900 ft). The lake is fed by glaciers of the Khangchengyao massif, forms the headwaters of the Teesta river and is considered sacred by Buddhists and Sikhs. Today is Sikkim Day, which commemorates the formation of Sikkim as a state of India in 1975, following a popular referendum and full merger after decades of being a protectorate since 1947.
