This file shows an identifiable security officer in an operational/security context, including a weapon and official security vehicles. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit informed me that the original source of this image was removed by them, and that they did not upload this file to Wikimedia Commons. The continued public availability of this image raises privacy and security concerns. Since the file is also connected to VRT ticket #2024041610006313, I request that the validity and scope of the permission be reviewed, including whether it covers this specific file and whether publication remains appropriate after the official source was removed. For privacy and security reasons, I prefer not to provide personal identifying details on a public page. I request deletion of this file, or at minimum temporary removal/restriction while the permission, source, privacy and security concerns are reviewed. FileReview2544 (talk) 10:11, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
Keep The license has been confirmed via VRT, so this file has been published with permission. If security concerns has place, why permission was given? Evelino Ucelo (talk) 16:04, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comment.
- I respectfully disagree with keeping this file based only on the existence of a VRT permission.
- My concern is not limited to copyright or license validity. This file shows an identifiable security officer in a sensitive operational/security context, including a weapon and official security vehicles. The continued public availability of this image may create privacy, personal safety and operational security concerns.
- The original official source of this image was removed by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit. I was also informed that the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit did not upload this file to Wikimedia Commons. Therefore, the fact that a VRT ticket exists should not end the review. The permission should be checked again to confirm whether it covers this exact file, this exact use, and the identifiable person shown in the image.
- In addition, if the official source was later removed by the issuing authority, continued publication on Commons should be reviewed again, especially given the security-related context of the image.
- For privacy and security reasons, I prefer not to provide additional personal identifying details on a public page. If needed, I respectfully ask that this matter be reviewed privately by VRT/OTRS or by an administrator.
- For these reasons, I still request deletion of the file, or at minimum temporary restriction/removal while the VRT permission, official source, privacy concerns and security implications are reviewed. FileReview2544 (talk) 06:34, 28 May 2026 (UTC)

- @Belbury while awaiting your response, I reiterate, as in previous conversations and in agreement with other administrators, that if the source photos are in the public domain, then no copyright is being violated. MarioeMary (talk) 11:55, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- The copyright issue would be that the websites you were using may have some small print in their terms of use that makes their output incompatible with Commons, even when the inputs are public domain images.
- ChatGPT would be okay for generating cartoon versions of Bruce Lee, although if these images aren't in use on any projects I'm not sure what their COM:EDUSE would be. Belbury (talk) 12:07, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Belbury I checked my smartphone history and was able to verify that I did indeed use ChatGPT for the 7 images under discussion here. Regarding the purpose of the images of movie characters, I would like to bring to your attention other images, cartoons, avatars, photos... of characters from films and TV series:
- MarioeMary (talk) 15:34, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Those images are in use on other projects. Perhaps they're drawings of actors that we don't have any freely licenced photos of.
- What educational use do you see in your own cartoonified images of Bruce Lee wearing different outfits? Belbury (talk) 15:43, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Perhaps? But what’s the difference? What are the requirements of those images that allow them to remain here on Commons while these cannot? You can’t answer with a “maybe”. After your repeated reports, there is no “maybe”. Your actions become forced, spiteful, strange, and unsettling. If you want to be constructive, you should tell me why those images remain here on Commons while you want these deleted. And what requirement do I need to add to these seven files, taking cues from the list I provided you? You need to be clear and consistent. What does “Maybe” mean? MarioeMary (talk) 16:34, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- The difference is that the images are in use on other projects: they are automatically considered to serve some educational purpose per COM:INUSE. Belbury (talk) 17:02, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- You are mistaken because the Wikidata for Bruce Lee and the Wikidata for the TV series (Longstreet, Here Come the Brides, Blondie, Ironside, The Green Hornet and Batman) and Films (The BIG BOSS and Marlowe) of the characters are widely used across Wikimedia projects. Moreover, some characters represent other more widespread topics, for example Sensei Yoto represents Bruce Lee’s Karate, Leon Soo represents Bruce Lee’s Karate, Judo and Aikido, Kato represents Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu, Li Tsung represents Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, etc... As you can see, these are characters that are useful for many Wikimedia projects MarioeMary (talk) 17:35, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

Belbury (talk) 09:54, 1 June 2026 (UTC)
- No, it was not converted "without any assistance". It was a mixed workflow.
- 1.Starting point: File:Bruce Lee as Kato 1967.jpg is 250x300px. You cannot extract additional details from it using classic tools.
- 2.Only exception with AI: To reach this file (from File history:Bruce Lee as Kato (cartoon).png) at 550x700px I made 1 single AI intervention: I generated a high-resolution version of the face with hair and skin texture. The AI reconstructed the missing details because the original photo didn’t contain them. That’s the only automated step.
- 3. Everything else done manually: After that single step, everything else is manual work: cropping, colorization done on smartphone, outfit changes and text done with Photoshop/PC software. Every version - Kato, Lin, Yoto, Leon, Li Tsung - was refined and composed manually on top of that base.
- AI was used only once at the beginning to create the high-res face base. 95% of the work - colors, outfits, composition, text - was done without AI, manually. Without that initial exception however, the details would not have appeared. MarioeMary (talk) 19:37, 3 June 2026 (UTC)

Files in Category:Vasily Yurievich Chagovets
The first known publication of the portrait was in the book "Нариси з історії фізіології на Україні (Drawings from the History of Physiology in Ukraine)", published by the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv in 1959 (publication details). I was unable to locate any previous publications. I do not have access to the book to verify the claim that the author is unknown. However, even if the author is unknown, given the lack of information about previous publications, it should be assumed that the portrait is copyrighted in Ukraine until 2030, and likely even longer in the US due to the URAA.
Yellow Horror (talk) 12:16, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- This is a copy of a canvas portrait that was painted in times Chagovets was a professor of St. Vladimir Imperial University. You can find other copies in the halls of modern day Bogomolets National Medical University in Kyiv. The dressing itself is obviously from Russian Empire times: 1910-1917. Later there were no real possibility for Soviet professor to wear such closing, and of course no paintings. So it was made for department of physiology, depicting quite a young researcher. --Buruneng (talk) 21:57, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
- Is the artist of the painted portrait known? Is there any evidence that it is a pre-revolutionary original? The portrait could have been painted from an old photograph later, when Chagovets became famous, even after his death.--Yellow Horror (talk) 01:48, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- No, the artist is not known. I have access to a 1959 book - there is no authorship of the portrait. It was uncommon for Soviet books to name authors, especially from imperial times. Chagovets was well-known in his own time: his student's work was already recognized, in the age of 37 he won 3 professor positions in different universities, his publications were pioneering in several fields of physiology, he was one of the leading candidates of an important party during 1918 elections.
- Still, the book of 1959 is almost obviously not the first place of publication. It is not about Chagovets, there is a brief description of his research achievements. There is another book of 1957, containing his biography and works - and a portrait. I don't know what is this portrait, but I know only 4 portraits of Chagovets, and one of them uncovered recently. I will try to check the book. There is also a biographical book of 1956 about Chagovets himself - from the author of 1959 book, Worontzow. I will try to check this, too. I don't know about obituaries of 1941, but there is a number of articles from 1947-1956 dedicated to Chagovets. It will take time, but I am sure at least one of them will have it. --Buruneng (talk) 07:30, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, publishing photographs without attribution and/or source information was, unfortunately, a common practice in Soviet-era publications. While searching for previous publications of the portrait in question, I found another portrait of Chagovets, published in the book "Пятьдесят лет первого Ленинградского медицинского института им. акад. И. П. Павлова (Fifty years of the first Leningrad Medical Institute named after Academician I. P. Pavlov)" printed by the Leningrad branch of Medgiz in 1947 without attribution. As an anonymous publication, this portrait can be considered public domain in Russia since 2018... but not in US due to URAA (( --Yellow Horror (talk) 14:13, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

Keep USA courts have ruled that an image is "made public" when it leaves the custody of the photographer. While the first publication in a print media was 1959, it became public when a print left the custody of the commercial photographer and was transferred to the sitter. --RAN (talk) 02:10, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- If the photograph was taken by a professional photographer for a fee, you're right. But the available publications don't allow to say that for sure. In the early 1910s, when the portrait was presumably taken, high-quality photography was already available to amateur photographers.--Yellow Horror (talk) 14:13, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- Almost obviously we have here a painting or studio photo from 1910s. This is a professional light setting here, and a chair posture, and so on. We also have copies of this portrait in many derivative works. Everybody uses it already as a public domain. Nobody can probably sue all the publishers of the portrait as there are dozen of authors and publishers involved. --Buruneng (talk) 16:49, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
- The arguments seem flawed. "No one will prosecute all or any of the work's publishers" doesn't equate to a work being in the public domain. And in my opinion, public domain status should be justified by verifiable facts (such as a verifiable publication date), by expert assessments, or, at the very least, by incontrovertible arguments like "it's unrealistic for the author of this work to live 125+ years"; but not by arbitrary decisions like "this picture is already old, and it widespread across the internet (with our participation, by the way), so it is obvious that no one will come after us to sue us for infringing its author's rights".--Yellow Horror (talk) 22:30, 23 May 2026 (UTC)
- It depends on how you understand the sense of Commons existence. Would we need Commons without Wikipedia? I believe there would be no sense in it. Commons exists to bring illustrations for Wikipedia. It is its purpose. Why do we respect copyright? Partly as a tribute to the author, and partly as a protection of WMF from legal problems. With Soviet-published, unanimous media, we have nobody to pay tribute (what? to some state-owned body which stole some properties?) and nobody to sue WMF (the Soviet system has been dead for 35 years). On the other hand, we share a common humanity interest in having illustrations on Wikipedia. So this is a very strong argument: we have illustrations for good, and nothing bad ever happened. (Please, do not claim this portrait is widespread through Wiki; it is already in all Soviet and post-Soviet printed media, including encyclopedias. A lot of people act as if it is in the public domain - a customary law principle). --Buruneng (talk) 21:10, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thus, your position boils down to the belief that we shouldn't respect the rights of the authors who lived in the USSR (including the authors of anonymously published works), just as we respect the rights of authors who lived in more viable countries. I don't see this as significantly different from the position of some, which allows the appropriation of any property if it lies unattended and presumably no one will catch them.--Yellow Horror (talk) 10:05, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Courtesy deletion requested under COM:IDENT and COM:SCOPE. File is orphaned (description page confirms "There are no pages that use this file") and has had no encyclopedic use since the related article was deleted years ago. The nominator is one of the identifiable subjects of the photograph and objects to continued hosting under COM:IDENT; the file recently came to the nominator's attention in connection with off-wiki misuse. No countervailing educational or encyclopedic value given the orphaned status. The historical license is not contested; this request is solely under COM:IDENT subject-objection grounds. Comment please send request via COM:VRT. This rule is necessary because nominators can be enemies of subjects or authors, or just vandals. Thanks. Evelino Ucelo (talk) 16:09, 20 May 2026 (UTC)- Bull. I don't think this is the uploader's own work. It comes from the ILWA web site (middle of bottom footer). from the uploader, suggesting that the photos are probably copyrighted. Commons files must also be for use by anybody, for any purpose, they cannot be restricted to just "educational" purposes.

- File:Tadeusz Swietochowski 2016.jpg is credited to Małgorzata A. Gudzikowska and File:Бакинский рабочий by Эрзья.jpg to "unknown author" from the (now defunct?) website https://qorod.blog. Are you able to show that Gudzikowska and qorod.blog have released these photos under CC-BY-SA licences? Belbury (talk) 22:43, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- I do not know where to find those people as I tried unsuccessfully to contact them at the time. Both files are derivative works, which is clearly stated in the summary. Therefore I am unable to show the aforementioned licenses on their behalf. Can this issue wait for two weeks since I am departing to a country where no Internet access will be available to me? Bilgeis (talk) 18:21, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- If these are photos by two people who you haven't contacted to ask about the licencing, we shouldn't host them speculatively (and say that they're CC-BY-SA licenced and that people around the world can reprint them for free), in the hope that they say yes.
- If this DR is closed before you're able to obtain permission, you can make a Commons:Undeletion request to restore the images later. Belbury (talk) 18:45, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

One from "a family archive" and the others all claimed to be {{Own}}, which is possible but extremely unlikely. The family archive image cannot be kept unless the uploader can prove who the actual photographer was and can show that he is the heir of that person. The others cannot be kept without proof that they are either PD or properly licensed.

Comment The photo is published in 1912, so {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}}. The identity of the subject person is wrong. He is not 木村次郎右衛門 (KIMURA Jiroemon, 1897−2013), a world-record long-lived man, but 安楽徳郎 (ANRAKU Tokuro, 1906-1942), a non-notable grandson of 安楽兼道(ANRAKU Kanemichi, 1851-1932).
