Dietmar Rabich (XRay)

background
My name is Dietmar Rabich, also known here on Wikimedia Commons as XRay. I live in the Münsterland, a region in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Photography is my hobby, which dates back to the analog era of the 1970s. Over the years, not only have my photographic skills evolved, but I’ve also developed something of a personal style.

I prefer to photograph architecture, landscapes, and technical subjects. However, the way I photograph these subjects has changed. While my style was initially rather sober and matter-of-fact, today my photos are often characterized by minimalist compositions or specific lighting situations. In addition to these main areas of focus, I regularly take on other photographic challenges, partly to learn from them. This includes, in particular, photographic art, which holds a special appeal for me.

The slide and negative films of the analog era required a rigorous selection process, which resulted in many beautiful images—but unfortunately meant that others were never created in the first place. Even though there was little opportunity for post-processing, it is precisely these images that hold historical value and deserve a place here on Wikimedia Commons, so that this era can be documented in a way that others can benefit from.

Digital photography allows for the creation of a more extensive body of work. Post-processing makes it possible to improve image quality, optimize the images, and emphasize one’s own perspective. This creates a solid foundation for images that are worth sharing with others here. It has also become important to me to show others the joy and possibilities of photography and, in doing so, to support the development of their own skills.

There are a number of quotes from renowned photographers, but one stands out to me in particular. It captures the nature of the relationship between photography and the photographer. It highlights a very personal connection and underscores the profound significance of photography as a passion.

Photography is not made to impress others. Photography is made to discover yourself. — Ovidiu Selaru

P.S.: Oh yes, the photo equipment is often mentioned. I have multiple cameras and lenses. The composition of the equipment has changed over time. It is always chosen in such a way that it satisfies my interests and requirements. From my point of view, the equipment is a means to an end, i.e. the photographer’s tools.
