Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

I put the template down to prevent the bot from editing, if you want to remove it that's fine, but the bot only respects {{Bots}}, nothing else, so it'll end up editing that page again. Tenshi Hinanawi (talk) 08:48, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

Same here. I don't care if <center> is "obsolete" - it's nicer than the long sloppy alternatives, and will still be rendered correctly by browsers indefinitely. I don't care if it's "lint" - I'm not trying to make my userpage compliant with W3C HTML5 best practises. Don't botedit peoples' user/talkarchive pages without first asking them. –Vuccala (talk) 05:42, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

I disagree, it's an issue to address when browsers are liable to drop it and refuse to render it at all. It's been that way for 18 years since HTML5 released, and deprecated in 1997 in HTML4. This bot isn't the first of it's kind in Commons either, see Fluxbot, MatrixBot and WOSlinkerBot. Tenshi Hinanawi (talk) 11:03, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Hiding description text

That's interesting. It can be fixed by making the first param explicit (1=). Looking at Category:Language templates with no text displayed there's not many edge cases like this. Tenshi Hinanawi (talk) 15:44, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

Incorrect font->span conversion

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Deletion_requests/Images_of_Stan_Spanker&diff=prev&oldid=1260422839 turned large chunks of the text green, and an examination of the diff shows because it was taking certain font-/font pairs and turning the later and not the former into spans. May I suggest the bot checks that it's working in pairs, and/or the result passes an HTML check at least as well as it started? Prosfilaes (talk) 02:48, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

I'll look into it. Running in pairs would prevent fixing this type of problem as well as whenever <font> tags are missing their end tag. As for HTML validation, that's not in my expertise and I would have zero clue how to get that to work or cooperate with my bot. Tenshi Hinanawi (talk) 08:58, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

Bot output should be equivalent

Hi there,

Your bot is 'solving' linter errors by replacing <center> tags in this case by code that is not equivalent. After I rolled it back, your bot once again did the same edit.
