<My full name> to TM

It was a bad decision to use my full name as username because it appears on hundreds of “This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons” pages, even in foreign Wikipedia projects I never participated. I'm already using “TM” as my public signature. PS: I like my edits and I would like to track my edits. That's why I do not want to create a second account. Hi! I recently created my account under the name "Eärendil". However, I discovered a few moments later that a very similar username is already used on the French-speaking Wikipedia (see fr:Utilisateur:Earendel). I registered there under the name fr:User:Gil-Estel, and I'd like to change my username here accordingly. I have only a few edits here, but I uploaded a picture, so it seems cleaner to me this way. Coming soon, it will be possible (and in fact desirable) to log in using one password, one ID, across all the wikis where you have accounts. but your username needs to be the same (and the email it is associated with needs to be the same) across all wikis. You're moving away from that idea I think by setting up different accounts on different wikis, which may make things inconvenient for you in future. Most other people are moving in the other direction, changing to the same name on all wikis, even usurping unused names in some cases, where it makes sense to do so. I can't find the most relevant explanation, but see meta:H:UL for a starting point. This is coming and it will be cool... but from the questions: "Q: Can I merge different usernames? - A:No, but this might be possible in future versions.' See also testwiki merge account test feature ... hence my question, are you SURE you want to do this? I could be confused as to what you want to do, but if you wanted to change BACK later, I'd be somewhat concerned. ++Lar: t/c 14:16, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Is that you too? We don't normally usurp users with recent edits unless both users are already controlled by the same person. Remember m:SUL is coming... en:wp (among other places) has a w:User:Will already and once SUL happens, your name here would need to change back. I find this tool quite helpful, it shows that for Will, there are a lot of users out there on various wikis. I'd be inclined to decline this request (unless you actually are that user Will on en and can prove it by crosslinking.. (see User:Lar/Crosslink, the standard boilerplate I use to ask for crosslinks) ) Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 10:08, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure why such a link would be necessary - the details of SUL are still to be worked out. Its unclear if my account here was User:Will what effect what outcome there would be to the conflict between user names that generates. I would however like this username on Commons - if I return to being User:WJBscribe once SUL comes in, never mind. If I get to be User:Will on en.wiki - so much the better. Also there is no reason why under SUL one cannot have accounts on different Wikis by different names - they simply cannot be unified. WjBscribe 10:40, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
SUL is coming. It is, I believe, much closer than you think, and the details are quite firm as I understand it. I don't think that increasing the number of accounts that can't be unified is a good idea, as it increases work that has to be done later (every exception requires manual review and may lead to rechanges later). I may be misinterpreting or inventing policy on this, but I am inclined to deny requests to move to non unified IDs (see the archive, the last two entries are requests withdrawn after the user fully understood SUL), and to require crosslinking on requests where the ID exists elsewhere and the user asserts such. Now in this particular case, the en:wp Will account appears to be quite old and inactive, but it does have significant contributions. Other Will accounts are fresher and more active. One of them can well make a case to usurp your Will during the advent of SUL, so why make more work? Other crats may well feel differently, I am, after all, the newest one and we have many others. Well I would certainly appreciate a second opinion from another crat. It seems an odd result to me that because someone registered w:User:Will and made a couple of hundred edits back in 2004 I can now not have that username on a completely different Wiki. Nothing in the recent threads on Wikitech-l suggests that Brion intends to force people to unify their names across projects. I believe I am familiar with what is being proposed for SUL and I would still like this rename. I would point out that there is nothing to stop someone creating the account and making significant contributions with it - I feel it a reasonable request for me as an established contributor to the Commons to be renamed to that username. As to recent edits by other accounts, I am User:Will on en.wikisource.org . WjBscribe 10:56, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone for their input. I've decided to withdraw the request after several people have pointed out that while WJBscribe is a unique name associated with me, Will is generic. I hope this hasn't been a waste of everyone's time - I agree with Lar that we need to work out a nuanced policy for how to handle requests that raise these issues and hopefully our having thrashed out some of the arguments is a good thing in developing that. I've given this a subheading partly for archival purposes.. and partly to confirm, what you are asking to do is to usurp an account you control already? (if not, please change the header to reflect what it is you want...) Would you like the end result to be that both accounts still exist but basically swapped around, if at all possible? I don't see any problem with this, the history shows clearly you control both accounts... just out of curiousity, can you give a pointer to another wiki where you have an account? Please create an account here, name it anything you want. Then crosslink. (see user:Lar/Crosslink for the standard boilerplate)... once you've done that we can do things for you like create FWN and usurp it, but we're not going to do it on the word of an anon. However we cannot move edits from an account that you don't have the password for to an account that you do, the account move is a rename, so you would still have the problem of logging in. I created FWN and can set the password to something you specify by mailing me what you want, as I said before. I got your mail but it did not contain a requested password... If I usurp it (move FellowWikipedian's edits to it), you will then have to use FellowWikipedian's password to log into FWN, and you said you do not know that password. To clarify, you want to have RnR usurp J, and you control both? Seems doable. Do you have any particular name you want the old J to get when we've usurped it? Normally it would get "Jurock (usurped)"... I see you've already crosslinked things. As for the talk pages, that's your preference to do as you like but I think many people just redirect. If you have active conversations on the J one that you want to preserve, merging the pages by hand (bringing all the convos over from J to R) might not be a bad idea, as you say. That's not a crosslink, that's an assertion. A crosslink proves the two users are the same. We need some kind of a link from the en:wp account to here, saying "this is me on commons" or something like that. (from that account, on that wiki, post saying this is you here, perhaps on your user page) and post a link to it? Thanks for finding that. However, as I pointed out at O's talk page, the person asking for the rename ought to provide it, since they are asking for a favour, that's just courtesy. Further, if the person asking did that, it would save a fair bit of wasted effort of other people pointing things out, as well as wasted effort on the 'crats part searching all over various pages/histories and so forth for where things might or might not be. The user himself/herself is the person best positioned to provide the crosslink. Which is why we ask the user to provide it, rather than asking bystanders to find it (and optionally add comments that some might perceive as digs... sometimes the link is not at all obvious, you know). ++Lar: t/c 03:06, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, it wasn't intended as a dig. I agree the user should provide it - however, it doesn't actually say anywhere they are required to provide the link. It took me two minutes to find it. OK. I haven't got link to commons on my Polish page yet but I have made the link now (see Babel - description: "This user has his own page on Wikipedia Commons." (in Polish: "Ten użytkownik posiada własną stronę na Wikimedia Commons."). Other Polish language projects I have my page as Electron are
Electron on pl.wikisource and Electron pl.wikiquote.
I visit these pages rather rary so on each of it (user page) I have the link (in Polish) to the discussion page on my "native" Polish page (click on the word "here" - in Polish: "tutaj") to be in touch with the other users. I cannot find your request here... Is there another link I should looking at? I have verified that you have a crosslink between both de and commons account, but I wouldn't like to run the risk to rename you here while your rename doesn't go through on de.wiki for some reason. Accounts can't be merged, which is what I think you're asking...also, if you've already created your SUL, you can't rename Pessimist to Keilana as "Keilana" (the name) would be taken, even if User:Keilana (the account) was renamed.
