Thanks Jeff G. Yes the file to be merged with the other exists. I am not sure why the version history has to be deleted, because it now should be merged with the other file, but I am not an expert here. However, redirects are not mentioned on Commons:Deletion_requests. So, for every merge correction in this image collection by Meike Piepenbring that Meike and I are currently revising and updating, I have make a delete request, then, once done, re-created the page with a #Redirect command? The discovery is of the full square variant of the Koch Curve and its properties. Nevertheless, I forgot to give him the actual paper in which I properly show how I discover the mathematical properties. It is an Extended Essay for the International Baccalaureate. Therefore, I was trying to upload it as a reference but it didn`t let me. I still have the emails with [redacted] ([redacted]) which was the original editor. It'd be amazing if this could be uploaded as the reference since at the end of my paper I suggest new areas for contribution which can be cool.

Update I see this comment about after 4 days I may have the ability to delete / change things. But it also says PDF's what about .jpgs or something like that .bmp png what ever. Some of what you say is over my head. And while I don't disagree with the purpose of all that has been listed. I have uploaded pictures in other scenarios but certainly with less aggressive testing of the pictures. Than this site. Again, no criticism.

This picture is part of a cache of a few 100 pictures my father and mother took during the 2nd ww. My brother and I have been working through them. I was interested in this Club in Montreal and found that someone else had uploaded a picture. In fact it was interesting that the background was exactly the same wallpaper, if that is what is in this picture. This picture I uploaded is of my mother and bluie who she was engaged to be married to but was killing in the 2ww. Several of her engaged fiancés were killed. I guess my dad was the lucky one who did not.

By nature I am a historian and thought it would be fun for anyone who wanted to know about this "Club in Montreal", which during the war was a hotbed of clubs and entertainment places. My mother was stationed in part at Mountain View and Kingston AFB in Ontario. The men and woman would take the train to go to Montreal for a weekend. Those were the days.

Once I uploaded the picture I saw that it had my brothers name and email all over it.

This is certainly were the probems began. Now it appears my brother who faithfully puts his name as photographer, and the date of the picture, in the photo fields, not to lie but for his own sorting purposes, but this was 70 years ago. He uses photoshop. When I tried to fix the picture with the photographer and email removed, your site properly said maybe "Hey why are you trying to change who is the photographer" I was just trying to upload a copy with no name in it for privacy reason.

Anyway having his name and email in the picture seemed bad. 

He and I are going over old brittle Negatives with negative readers and then creating Positives from them and thus images.

Although some of these pictures are from pictures from albums my parents had.

Having said all that.

Maybe this is all too complex for me. I know people will say just read this and that, which I did do. Spent some time at it. But even the questions, do I own it what? Is the copywrite?  etc etc. Again no criticism, I understand all of the reasons why this is important,  but that is all above me.

I figure, these are my pictures. My parents being gone for a long time now. But I could not find any place that really matched my choice of copywrite. i thought i had it right? Maybe I did

I know that when I'm gone no one will look at these WW2 pictures. They will get stuffed in a corner and forgotten, maybe thrown away. For me that is sad. Not just for my family, but really for history, because I like it. The wiki thing is maybe too much for me sadly.

So the only thing I can suggest is for you to delete it. I wish that I could learn it but there seems to be for too much for me to learn to come up to speed. Maybe I will revisit. But I do wish it was easier? Becasue I think there is a great deal of value in it.

So it would have been one of their mates, I know my mom had many. I mean you would have gone to Montreal with friends.

But who I dont know. It may not have even been Another Canadian AF personal, as this base as a commonwealth training base. My father for example was Australian. So who know. I see that there have been some helpful changes to the remarks of picture. Thanks for that.

So will i after 4 days see various options pop up so that I can delete one of the two pictures? I see there are two pictures listed currently. Although I may have read that you cant delete a picture only overwrite? confused on that.

I also see that the below info is about the copy-write. In future I will btw look at the meta data to make sure it is not a problem. But below this seems to indicate that any picture that has not been published before 1970 and was created before 1945 is free to upload.

I know there is a sandbox, (although now I cant find it.)but I dont suppose it is to the extent were you can pretend to upload a picture and see if it works and how it will be listed. If you know what I mean. To actually go through the whole process as a test to get use to the process. Like kind of a reddit test and then say 7 days later it just get deleted?

If you mean the overwritten first version of 15:06, 12 March 2026 (UTC), I don't think that's a problem, but if you are that concerned about it, you may ask at COM:AN now (rather than 4 days from now). I chose It was created before January 1, 1945, but It was published before January 1, 1970 may also be true if your mom showed the album before 1970 (if she didn't, 75 years have passed since the end of the calendar year of its creation, without it ever having been published while still in copyright would be true). Your sandbox could be at User:StevWolf/sandbox, but you would have to create that on any project where you need one. Mmm maybe I'm confused. There are two pictures under File history each with a thumbnail. But it does look to me as if the appropriate meta data (scrubbed) is the only data that shows up so that seems right.

It exists because some pirates were embedding copyvio content in TIFF and other files starting in November 2016. See also Commons talk:Abuse filter/Archive 2019/08#Report by Jwh, in which the reporting party was successful in uploading after removing the metadata with "Properties / Remove Properties and Personal Information / Create a copy with all possible properties removed". I'm not new (2009), not anonymous (pseudonymous, but that literally does not matter), and not prepared to play games with poorly tuned automated tools. Commons doesn't even have a policy that requires what filter 313 does, so while it's nice that Leo thought it was a problem, that is not a consensus.

I've watched for years the continuing lack of consensus on how to format and place the licence tags—the instruction pages dance around it, saying it could be in the description template, or it is usually its own section. Actual practice is essentially driven by the automatic formatting of the upload tools, which tend to favour the Licensing heading, but you might notice that there is no maintenance process to convert one format to the other automatically. I don't even particularly care where it goes, as long as there exists a policy or guideline founded upon consensus—but until such time, a filter without explicit consensus is in principle erroneous. The filter doesn't even understand that this image description page had the licences twice, and that 1 of the 2 was redundant. TheFeds 19:41, 17 March 2026 (UTC)

Achim55 actively monitors this page, along with other Admins. I see Special:AbuseFilter/history/313. But "keeping the licensing in the licensing section for users who are not yet autopatrolled has been the way to proceed" is a curious conclusion to draw from that log. Are you saying that autopatrolled users are entitled to put it in either location, but others are not? There's no policy or guideline that remotely approaches that; is there a discussion page, or off-wiki Phabricator record that supports the existence of such a consensus? All I get from the history is that they made bugfixes of a routine nature, rather than discussed it. At best, that's a couple experienced users affirming a course of action without explicit words to that effect.

It isn't an especially important issue, and I get that. But as a point of principle, if discussion leading to consensus is not the standard for establishing a systematic course of action, what do you assert it is instead? TheFeds 01:41, 18 March 2026 (UTC)

@TheFeds There is no requirement that licensing goes in a licensing section. But people often remove section headings (most often license/description sections) when vandalizing, so when a license/description section is present, users who aren't autopatrolled cannot delete it themselves (although they can move/edit it, and can remove all but one section if more than one of the same kind of section is present).

False positive while correcting file source/author

Hello, this seems to be a false positive.

I am trying to correct the source and author fields on a file page. The file is not my own original photograph; it is a cropped portrait from a group photograph reproduced in the unpublished manuscript Kronika rodu Krinesů (1949). The original photographer is unknown.

My constructive edit was disallowed by the Abuse Filter. Could someone please review this or suggest how to make the correction?

Edit kind: I was trying to make a slight typographic correction to an existing image, as the image did not read properly in the original language. Wikipedia sent me to the wizard that created a separate intry, when in practice I wanted to introduce my version to this page, wich is almost identical to the previous versions.

based on advice from the WikiHelpDesk, I am trying to change the Licensing block from my initial choice to "fair use" after finding that the photo I uploaded (depicting my late father) may well have copyrights attached.

Here the suggestion I received:

"I think you need to start again for fair use on Wikipedia, but the policy is that you need to wait until the draft is an article. You can use Wikipedia:File upload wizard and select "Upload a non-free file", then you will be asked questions that populate the "Media data and Non-free use rationale" box. That should work, but if it doesn't you could ask a new question here or at the Tea House."

So should I delete the photo and start over?

@Cbumb: Yes, please (that is good advice). In addition, you may refer to the the photo you want to upload in the draft (with an instruction like INSERT ONLY AVAILABLE FAIR USE PHOTO HERE UPON MOVE TO MAINSPACE), but policy dictates that you are not allowed to upload the photo there and have it remain until the article is in mainspace (where sufficiently referenced biographical articles on notable individuals reside). For overviews, see en:WP:F, en:WP:42, and COM:THIRD. So we are clear, Commons does not allow Fair Use per COM:FAIR, and waiting for "the photo be part of the evaluation for publishing the article" is a fool's errand unless you have a photo that is free enough for Commons (see COM:L for what that means). Edit kind: I was trying to upload a scan of an archival document from 18th century containing legal documents and inventories for locations in Galicia. The reason for the block was that I am a new user. The document I am trying to upload is a pdf of 219 pages.
