Featured pictures are images from highly skilled creators that the Wikimedia Commons community has chosen as some of the highest quality on the site.

Simply click on the name of a category on this page to see the featured images for that subject. To reuse any images from Wikimedia Commons please see this guide.

There are currently 21,459 of such images in the Commons repository which is roughly 0.015% of the available images (139,177,016). All featured images are entered into our annual Picture of the Year competition. You may wish to browse the profiles of individual photographers, illustrators, and restorationists within the Commons community who have contributed a substantial portion of our featured pictures.

Images may be considered for featured status by being listed at Commons:Featured picture candidates, where the community will reach a consensus. An image only appears one time in the galleries. You can find all featured pictures in Category:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons.

Old candidates for featured pictures are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured pictures: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and current month.

Blue shark (Prionace glauca), Faial-Pico Channel, Azores Islands, Portugal. The blue shark is a species of requiem shark, in the family Carcharhinidae, that inhabits deep waters (images taken though between 5 and 10 meter below water) averaging around 3.1 m (10 ft) and preferring cooler waters. They can live up to 20 years, can move very quickly and feed primarily on small fish and squid, although they can take larger prey.
