English: History note: The badge is a reference to Arthur's sword Excalibur, acknowledging the connections with the West Country (see below). 77th Division was formed on 1 December 1941 by redesignation of Devon and Cornwall County Division. The County Division (qv) included an Excalibur and on formation 77th Division chose a new badge which retained this motif. 77th Division was formed on Lower Establishment and its Brigades were formed as "Home" formations, that is raised specifically for home defence. Two of its Brigades had been formed by Training Groups, 203 Brigade by 3rd Infantry Training Group and 209 Brigade by 9 Group. On 20 December 1942 the Division was redesignated a Reserve Division and reorganized for training. One of its Brigades, 211, left the Division in January 1943 to be replaced by 11 Tank Brigade to provide armoured training facilities. The Division was again redesignated in December 1943 as a Holding Division and reorganized to sort, retrain and hold on a temporary basis personnel between permanent allocation to units due to disbandments, medical and other causes. 11 Tank Brigade left the Division at this time. The Division disbanded on 1 September 1944. Its two remaining Brigades, 203 and 209, converted to 134th and 135th Brigades respectively.
