English: The Detroit Masonic Temple, 500 Temple Street at 2nd Avenue, as seen from Cass Park, Detroit, Michigan, December 2020. Built from a design by architect George D. Mason, the building became the world's largest Masonic temple ten years after its 1926 opening, when the one in Chicago was demolished. Representative of Gothic Revivalism - unusual in Masonic architecture, which usually prefers Classical forms - the temple embodies the style splendidly, with an Indiana limestone façade dominated by sweeping vertical lines. Flanking the ample recessed central portion of the façade (which contains columns of windows separated by spandrel panels with geometric ornamentation, and the top portion of which features tracery with fleur-de-lys patterns and a bluntly pointed compound arch) is a pair of octagonal towers, crenellated at the tops and pierced by loop windows and the occasional lancet window. In addition to meeting space for numerous Masonic organizations within the Detroit area, the building also contains a swimming pool, handball court, gymnasium, bowling alley, billiard hall, hotel space (not currently in occupiable condition), and a concert auditorium with a maximum seating capacity of 4,404.
