Summary
Randomly scattered rice on ground. WLOG part of the image and size of grid was chosen to give one grain per square, i. e. mean expectation λ=1, see poisson distribution. In this case we can derive e: 1/e == probability to find no or one grain per square.
Statistics: number of squares containing n grains:
number grains 23 0 25 1 12 2 2 3 1 4 1 5
Total of 64 grains in 64 squares, i. e. λ=1
