English: Diagram of the trench effect. On a slope above a critical angle, asymmetric air entrainment deflects the flame onto the surface (Coandă effect) rather than letting it rise vertically. The attached flame preheats fuel upslope, releasing flammable gases that can suddenly ignite (flashover). Effect identified in the 1987 King's Cross Underground fire. |
