According to COM:FOP UK 'painting, drawing, diagram, map, chart or plan, any engraving, etching, lithograph, woodcut or similar work' are copyright protected. I think the design on the concrete thing here falls under graphic works as it looks similar to as if it was etched or engraved onto the concrete block, but this is subjective. This work is in New Zealand, not the United Kingdom, so what on earth does COM:FOP UK have to do with it? Under New Zealand copyright law, 3D sculptures and works of artistic craftsmanship on permanent public display are exempt. Paora (talk) 04:06, 22 March 2026 (UTC)

Per COM:FOP NZ 'Copyright legislation in New Zealand also follows that of the United Kingdom. In the absence of any specific case law to the contrary it is reasonable to assume that the rules will be identical. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom for more details.'

Skylid is patently not a 2D graphic work, which it would need to be for it not to be exempted by section 73 of New Zealand's Copyright Act 1994. The artwork comprises the carefully designed 3D concrete scultpural forms that have been cast and combined to create a structure that appears to hover above the pavement, the design that has been sandblasting into the upper curved surface of the concrete substrate in relief, and the curved metal strip that runs across the top of the curved dome covering the joint between the two concrete sections representing the mingling of the waters of the harbour with those flowing in Waihorotiu Stream. Togther, all these elements make up Skylid, a 3D work of artistic craftsmanship that is permanently installed in Waitematā Station Plaza, meeting all the requirements for exemption under section 73. Keep. I'd agree with you IF this were a mural or other 2D graphic applied to a building or other structure in situ. But it's not. The design was sandblasted into the curved surface of two carefully designed cast concrete elements that are intrinsic parts of the sculpture, before the artwork was assembled in its totality by bringing together the concrete and metal elements that comprise the artwork. The whole installation is the artwork here. Skylid is not just the graphic element on the upper side of the structure as you contend, it is the complete assemblage. Keep, in use. The map also DOES provide sources in the description, those sources may however have not been interpreted correctly. I do AGF from the creator, but yes, there are issues which is why the map has a "disputed" warning already.

In the respective talk page in enWP, I have now added suggestions on how we could change this map itself in order to make those reservations unneccessary. Thoroughly editing the map key could be enough to rectify the map so that it no longer contradicts sources and our articles. --Enyavar (talk) 20:10, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

The map itself is not a copyvio that requires takedown, and it has already spread outside of Wikimedia, for example this blog entry by the Swiss National Museum. I'm not saying their inclusion of the map was scientifically responsible, but they used it in their content, and others may have done so as well. --Enyavar (talk) 16:27, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
