Description
English: This polygonal texture displayed by the smectic liquid crystal is the result of half focal-conic domains that pack to fill the half hemispherical space with bases of the cones located at the aqueous interface of the Janus droplet. We have recently demonstrated that these liquid crystal-generated topological singularities are powerful templates for the spatial organization of biomolecules for biological and sensing technologies (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jacs.9b09216).
Español: La textura poligonal exhibida por el cristal líquido esméctico es el resultado de medios dominios cónico-focales que se empaquetan en el hemisferio cristal líquido con las bases de los conos dirigidas hacia la interfase acuosa. Recientemente hemos demostrado que estas singularidades topológicas generadas en el cristal líquido pueden utilizarse a modo de plantilla para la organización espacial de biomoléculas, lo que resulta de gran interés para aplicaciones biológicas y sensores (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jacs.9b09216).

Polarized-light optical microscopy (POM) image of Janus colloids comprising two immiscible liquids, a smectic liquid crystal and a fluorocarbon oil. When studied by POM, multiple focal-conic defects are present within the liquid crystal compartment.
