Edit kind: I was trying to make a slight typographic correction to an existing image, as the image did not read properly in the original language. Wikipedia sent me to the wizard that created a separate intry, when in practice I wanted to introduce my version to this page, wich is almost identical to the previous versions.

Comments: I'm new to editing in wikipedia, I may be doing something wrong, I'm certainly don't trying to abuse anyone, only to make a very slight correction, probably imperceptible to ayone who doesn't speak the language of the image (Yiddish). Royte1897 (talk) 22:26, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

okay thank you for the clarification. Even though it might sound promotional, yet it was quite the opposite. Anyways, what's done is done, but it really did hurt to see my poetries termed as simple plain texts. Any suggestions in how I might contribute in future? I'm new here. I read almost most of Wikimedia commons' user policy, but the pages just don't end! Every time I click on a link, another page pops up. I click, pops up, I click, pops up. So I'd be really glad if you or any of the administrators would share a piece of advice how to make meaningful contributions here.

Hi, and many thanks for the answer. I'm not a new user, the two articles I am now working on are "Logarithmic norm" (where I wrote the original article sometime around 2010) and "Stiff equation". Both are within my professional research, here I have published extensively on the topics in academic channels. I finished uploading the first article by the end of April, and started the uploading of the second a few days ago

I am now retired from my position as university professor, but I am still active, writing papers, books, and now also improving the scientific quality of Wiki articles. The one on "Logarithmic norm" had been edited to be somewhat incoherent, and also didn't have the more modern development. The one on "Stiff equation" was unfortunately in worse shape, with a mixed up notation, erroneous information, and material that doesn't belong at all. It appears that there are many authors behind various portions, which is not always an advantage.

Anyway, what I want to do is to bring bot articles up to state-of-the-art. I have put about two weeks work in each one before uploading, and the ambition is to raise the level to "AF" (although the topics may not be considered of such broad interest, even though both are key concepts in modern scientific computing and applied mathematics).

I'd be most obliged if the blockings would be lifted. It's a bit annoying to meet such hindrances after putting in os much work.

PS as for where the uploads come from: I live in Spain (where I uploaded the first article) and am currently visiting University of Texas in Austin, USA. I hope that this is not a problem with respect to IP numbers etc. Also, there seems to be a difference between using Safari (totally blocked) and Chrome, from where editing does work. Again, I regret my complaints in this regards; I am rather busy and do not have time to waste on work-arounds on this type of technicalities. I found the problem. A user with autopatrol rights added a link to a website on this spam list. As the filter only checks if the new wikitext contains this link all edits from users without autopatrol got blocked after this link was on the page. I think there is no good and reliable solution for this. Such links should just not exist on village pump pages. Comments: Given there seems to be a blanket filter that depends on user rights, notify users of it within the CropTool interface. Don't let users waste their time attempting to perform an operation that is going to get rejected. (It is not an excuse that a different development team implements CropTool. If you don't want to interact with them, then don't filter the output of their tool.)

Also, CropTool output is distinguishable from overwrites in general, because the content is not arbitrary. It is conceptually a subset of the existing file, subject to some well-constrained transformations.

It is obvious that this filter will cause some users to just upload a slightly-modified file under a new name, in an attempt to set accomplish their task. That is not necessarily a better state of affairs. TheFeds 22:43, 8 May 2026 (UTC)

I see that there was a consensus, and that's fine. The problem I am raising is that this filter has been implemented apparently without regard for user experience in CropTool. Is there a logical reason why CropTool could not display a permissions-based message to avoid users wasting their time?

Given that the filter is from 2024, and CropTool predates that, it seems the responsibility of the filter implementers to account for this change in behaviour, and either reach out to the CropTool developers, or take responsibility for the problem in another way. (One of those other ways might be to detect and permit CropTool overwrites on the assumption that CropTool does not allow arbitrary content to be injected into the overwriting version.) This decision was reached because by far most attempted uploads of PDFs by new users turned out to be either copyright violations or out of scope. If you were not the original file designer or photographer, that original creator may need to provide an appropriate license on their official website or public-facing social media, or may send the file and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you.

If you cannot get a compliant license, it is possible that the file may still be uploaded to the relevant wiki in compliance with their local rules. If this upload is your own work, or is someone else's appropriately licensed work, and is within Commons' scope, please go to the page Commons:Abuse filter and click the report an issue with an abuse filter button near the top of the page.

Edit kind: Adding a "Timestamp" template to image that clearly had a timestamp. it triggered the abuse filter anyway, considering it "potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed". I had to add random full stops to the words in this file because it seems that the title is itself the reason for the abuse filter triggering the alarm, preventing me from posting this error report. This file is by "User:Jacklee". and was uploaded on 19:36, 30 November 2011. It is 968 × 768 pixels and has a file size of 189 KB. I'm adding this info so you know what file I'm referring to. This is the second time I have posted this report, the first was deleted by "User:Jeff G." (maybe he though it was vandalism because of the unusual way I'm forced to display the title of this file).
