Summary

Description

Signature of Joseph Pawnee-no-pashe

English: Joseph Pawnee-no-pashe's signature from the 1865 Canville Treaty. Governor Joe was one of very few literate Osage Indians and also the only full-blood Osage to sign this document. He signed the document after all of the amendments were made on the part where the white men sign, so he wrote "Indian" next to his name. It's on page 26 of the treaty, as published at NARA's website. He would become governor in 1868 and replace White Hair in 1869.
