| Description |
English: Map of the Yilgarn craton in southwest Australia, showing the location of greenstone belts (supracrustals). Below a schematic cross-section through a greenstone belt, showing the shape and commonly occuring rock type sequence in greenstones. Greenstone belts occur as infolded synformal troughs in granulite gneiss terranes. An ideal greenstone sequence is (from bottom to top): ultramafic volcanic rock (komatiite), mafic volcanic rock (basalt), andesitic to felsic volcanic rocks, and metasediments on top. The entire sequence is cut through by (slightly younger) granitoid plutons.
The cross-section is by no means a realistic representation of geological structures at the location on the map. Rather, it shows the general nature of a greenstone belt. The map of the Yilgarn Craton is based on this file. |
