File:Strength profile Lithosphere EN.svg
Summary
| Description |
English: Strength profiles through the lithosphere according to the Brace-Goetze model, assuming a "normal" geothermal gradient.
Axes are strength (σ, horizontal) and depth (z, vertical). First profile (to the left) shows individual strength of all material against brittle deformation (black), strength of quartz against ductile deformation (blue) and strength of olivine against ductile deformation (green). Ductile strength curves have been plotted for high strain rates (curve more to the right) and low strain rate (curve more to the left). The red line is the MOHO (Mohorovičić discontinuity) between the crust (average composition closer to quartz) and mantle (average composition closer to olivine). Second (middle) profile shows total strength profile of the lithosphere at low strain rates, third (right) profile shows total strength profile of the lithosphere at high strain rates. |
