Delete Blurry image of the underside of part of a boat. How is this in scope? The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 09:21, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- It's not that blurry. If we had details about where, when, and hopefully what type of boat it is, I'd be vigorously arguing for it.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:01, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
Comment, the uploader also another image depicting the same boat: File:Pmusu (92169).jpg. From the image, the location appears to be near the Manoel Island Bridge in Malta. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 21:40, 21 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Tvpuppy: The markings above the hull on the port side of the bow in File:Pmusu (92169).jpg "S-13400" seem to indicate a designation. Note the similarity of uploader usernames pmusu and Petermusu. Markings on the port side of the stern and the configuration appear to indicate a sailboat with motor mount but no motor. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:11, 22 February 2026 (UTC)

File:Uncle Floyd 1982.jpg
Appears to be a screenshot, which one would normally regard as a derivative of a copyrighted work. The permission is in the form of a textual statement in the information template, reading like something we handle through VRT instead of the means presented. It was uploaded almost immediately after his death, further suggesting that the uploader views it as something akin to a fair-use image for Wikipedia. Category:Floyd Vivino has numerous files already, so there wasn't a pressing need for another image. The non-inclusion of this file in that category makes this all the more suspicious. I cannot find a death date for "Cav. V. Simone". This postcard may have an artistic photo and so death date of the photographer may be needed to determine copyright status. Abzeronow (talk) 02:02, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
Keep It is a non-artistic image. No unique studio lighting, no costuming, no posing the sitter like in a portrait. It is just pressing the shutter release outdoors. --RAN (talk) 19:08, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Landscape photography can be artistic, RAN. Thanks to User:Nakonana, we know Simone died in 1968. He was knighted in 1930, it's definitely possible that this photograph is from the 1930s. Abzeronow (talk) 06:34, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

Owner: Treasure Village, 86729 Old Highway, Islamorada, Florida 33036. The last part is what convinces me; how many giant lobster sculptures can there be in Islamorada, Florida? I'd like more information, but a 1992 installation sounds like it was published in 1992, and thus didn't need a copyright notice.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:19, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

The USCG has an FAQ for the Coast Guard Art Program. It says the artists were volunteers, and re-users needed written permission to use the image... Geo Swan (talk) 03:40, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Some of the images are indeed copyright free, including the titular one of this DR, on its page it says "This work, US Coast Guard Art Program 2015 Collection, 'Ice Liberty' [Image 1 of 28], is free of known copyright restrictions under U.S. copyright law". -Nard (Hablemonos) (Let's talk) 05:22, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- vk these all say public domain on the source page. The FAQ doesn't override that. -Nard (Hablemonos) (Let's talk) 05:25, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
I sent the following email to the individual listed as the contact person for the Coast Guard Art Program - I think you are the curator of the Coast Guard Art Program...
- The Wikimedia commons currently uses some images from your program. I uploaded one myself.
- I am going to draw your attention to a discussion at the Wikimedia commons, where we are discussing the copyright status of the images in your program, at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:US_Coast_Guard_Art_Program_2015_Collection,_%27Ice_Liberty%27_150209-G-ZZ999-018.jpg
- I subsequently noticed your FAQ. Most Coast Guard images are in the public domain, because they were made by employees of the Federal Government, in performance of their duties. But, these images, were made by volunteers... Please clarify for me. The paintings would not be in the public domain, because volunteers painted them, correct?
- I probably found the image I uploaded at dvidshub.net. It may have said it was a "courtesy image". Sadly, most US government webmasters, including those at dvidshub.net, use the term "courtesy image" misleadingly.
- Many times I think a DVIDSHUB.net webmaster uses "courtesy image" confusingly, for images they know are public domain, merely as a sign of respect to colleagues from a different federal agency. If you and your colleagues at other agencies ever talk about IP issues I would very strongly encourage you to find a different way to show respect to colleagues from other agencies.
- I think that for professional archivists, who are knowledgeable about intellectual property rights issues, the term "courtesy image" means the owner of the physical image they copied is also the owner of the image's intellectual property rights. I think they mean the owner had given them permission to use the image just once, and continues to retain all their rights.
- I've come across many images where a webmaster uses the term "courtesy image" for valuable images that were taken by a DoD employee, when the original DoD copy was not archived, and the only known copy is the treasured property of a sweet old veteran, or his heirs. What do sweet old veterans know about intellectual property rights? And, since re-using the image requires the sweet old veteran to loan it to them, they treat the physical copy as if the sweet old veteran has also acquired the intellectual property rights to the image, and calls it a "courtesy image".
- For the purposes of the Wikimedia commons, it doesn't matter whether the original artists retain the intellectual property rights, or whether they signed them over to the Coast Guard.
- Thanks for your attention to this matter.
- Cheers!
- In my opinion there are times when other contributors have called for deletion, under the Precautionary Principle, when I thought they were carrying the Precautionary Principle too far. But, in this case, I think caution is in order. Near as I can tell, NONE of the artists were Federal employees. They were all volunteers. I think they all donated their paintings, out of patriotism, even when they usually sold their paintings.
- As I said in my letter, I don't think it matters whether they formally gave their IP rights to the Coast Guard. Since they weren't Coast Guard employees, the paintings weren't born public domain. Yes, the Coast Guard could have released the images to the public domain. But, since the FAQ tells people they have to ask for permission to re-use the images, they clearly didn't do so.
- Can we wait until the Coast Guard contact person gets back to us?
- Ping User:Nard the Bard
- Cheersǃ
Call for closure. No one has responded to the email. I think all the images should be deleted... Geo Swan (talk) 00:29, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

I created and uploaded these within the past few days (which as I understand, should make them considered for "courtesy" speedy deletion). I thought they would represent a significant improvement upon pre-existing maps, but they have been met with confusion (if not anger; see, e.g., my talk page) and have been widely removed from relevant pages. I have no interest in spending time advocating for their at a mass scale. Also, I regret that I didn't upload them in .svg format. I may re-upload some as svg's in a more limited manner. Thank you for considering the request. --Lightandtruth (talk) 05:51, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
Keep Some of these are COM:INUSE. We can't delete them as courtesy deletions until they're removed from the articles they're in. That aside, I urge you to reconsider. Even if they're not all used in articles, they're still within Commons's scope. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 09:30, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- As of now, none of the files are in use on any page. I would prefer to proceed with the deletion. In any case I may upload new SVG versions, in which case these PNGs will be duplicative. Thank you. Lightandtruth (talk) 10:45, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

One can critique the underlying data, but if all maps were derived the same way, I see no reason to fundamentally reject them.--Enyavar (talk) 15:59, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
Keep, just like Squirrel above: @Lightandtruth, please re-consider your desire to have these files deleted; they add additional perspective and may be of interest: later, in non-English projects or even outside of Wikimedia. Your maps are worthwhile, especially when comparing them with each other instead of comparing them to "regular" maps. Also, just because files are no longer maintained/update/advertised by you as the author, does not mean they are out of scope or out of educational interest.- Having found at least one point of insertion: You replaced two choropleth-style map from 2018 and 2023 with a cartogram-style map from 2024. I do agree with @Skitash: that this was at least inconsiderate; they were correct that the more rigid census methodology is more sound and the choropleth map style is more established, than the cartogram style which you tried to insert. I would think that it was rather calling the other maps outdated and replacing them outright, that attracted this strong criticism. Confusion is obvious when laypeople meet cartograms; but I interpret those reverts not as anger towards your cartograms, but as anger towards the non-consensual way of inserting them. But even if they cannot be used in enWP, please let us keep them on Commons in a Category:Cartograms of ethnic groups in the United States or something similar.
- All that said, there are some nitpicks I have: You used a method of synthetic cartogram. All of the files are shaped/scaled the same, apparently based on total population per each state. That's okay and makes them easily comparable among each other. Then, you used pumas (themselves unexplained in the map) represented by "bubbles" (i.e. cartodiagrams) to display the respective share in the population. As a reader not familiar with US Census terminology, I found this approach confusing and first suspected that the bubbles were made in different sizes by error. So. If the shape/size of the PUMAs is determined by the population size anyway, why even use bubbles in the display? Why not color the pum-areas directly, achieving a much clearer visual picture? Finally, it would be helpful to move as much explanation of your methodology as possible: out of the rendering and into the file description. Ideally, a map speaks for itself visually, gets a caption in Wikipedia; and for all questions on the data/source/methodology, the readers can access the file description - the one that currently only reads "Cartogram of X-Americans in 2024".
- If you keep those tips in mind, I would hope you eventually release a follow-up series; or that you overwrite these current files with updates.
- All the best, --Enyavar (talk) 15:59, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Enyavar. I appreciate your feedback. My main concern, reflected somewhat in your own comments, although more nuanced than most I have encountered so far, is that Wikimedia/pedia is simply not the right platform for these maps; their design may simply be too complex to be understandable for the fast majority of users (and editors). As noted in the maps, they are "PARTIAL total population cartograms" where the bubbles (not polygons) are proportional to population. (I agree that part of the problem with the maps is that they are not explained sufficiently, which I regret.) This refers to the degree of distortion of the polygons. They are only PARTIALLY distorted toward the population weights because if they were fully distorted, the map would be completely unrecognizable as a map of the United States. This is the reason for the addition of the "bubbles" (or "Dorling" cartogram) overlaid on the "continuous" cartogram: to emphasize that even more of the population is concentrated in cities than is suggested by the underlaid continuous cartogram. Finally, I use the population-weighted cartograms with overlaid choropleth coloring to emphasize the frequency of different groups within the overall population. I intend to upload an improved series soon (in svg format, and with better description, not in the images themselves), and to engage in more dialogue about their potential incorporation into pages on talk pages, rather than simply replaced pre-existing maps as I did before. However, in the meantime, I would really like for this series to be deleted so that they don't become duplicative and confusing going forward. Thank you again for your consideration. No FoP for 2D works in China. The textual and graphical content presented on information panels or plaques in tourist attractions, museums, memorial halls, and former residences of famous figures is not in the public domain and is protected by copyright law. See also: Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Noticeboards and signs. Not OK. As a rule of thumb, detailed informational and educational noticeboards/signs, such as the ones that are often found at historical or tourist sites, are almost always copyright-protected and photographs of them cannot usually be accepted. Noticeboards may include graphic images or extended textual matter, or both, and copyright is likely to subsist in both. 2D-artwork is included in the FoP copyright-exception in most FoP-countries, but not in: Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Brunei, Canada, China. Alternatively, Google AI suggests Agimsaly Duzelkhanov / Әгімсалы Дүзелханов as author but I'm encountering the same problem with the sources. Yandex reverse image search finds a lot of matches and one of the matches might mention the author, but I'm yet again not able to access the websites (this is likely a geo-block problem on my end, someone at a different location might have more luck). Likely AI-generated upscale of File:Alex Pretti VA Image (official portrait by United States Department of Veterans Affairs).jpg. Text on his shirt seems to be nonsense. Kevin Payravi below words my concerns very well. This isn't reality. I compared this AI generated upscale to the photo of the original portrait behind glass and the CSP 2004 Microbiota photo. The AI beautified him, removing skin imperfections. Moved his eyebrows. Trimmed his beard. Gave him glasses with a thinner rim. Turned a shadow into chest hair. It even ironed his shirt. While it did that, it decided his breast pocket needed re-sewing.
Commons has some level of authority here. Does the image in this People.com article look familiar? That's my work, only slightly cropped. If they had done it themselves, they would have made slightly different choices. A little darker or brighter, a little sharper or softer, do the perspective correction slightly different - but it's pixel-perfect. Yet only the US Department of Veteran Affairs is credited. I'm not in this for the credit, but you should know: sometimes we are the source, even when not credited. Hosting this AI beautified version will make it spread, and the AI credit will get lost. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 07:28, 28 January 2026 (UTC) - Abzeronow, in the undeletion request you seemingly supported Josve05a's suggestion of news sources mentioning circulation of modified images. Daily Mail uses it because of course they do, and the New York Post as well. Both unironically and both crediting Facebook. DM credits "UNPIXS". (whatever that is) and NYP credits "Fight for a Union" (which I had already linked at the top). Daily Telegraph Australia may also have used it, but I'm not paying the wall.
There's bpdaily.com which I suspect scrapes w:Bored Panda (a blog) or something as the author link says "Kaitlin is a Current Affairs Journalist at Bored Panda". Oddly enough she has only a fraction of the articles on Bored Panda. Perhaps bpdaily mixes AI-generated articles with scraped articles. Dunno.
w:The Megyn Kelly Show (RSP discussion on WP) talks about the image in this episode. It's only a few minutes and not great. Skipping over the conspiracy bullshit, what they show as the "original" is a cropped+saturated version of this file. No perspective correction and they never mention nor show that this was cropped from a photo of the portrait behind glass.
Megyn Kelly claims MSNBC used it but doesn't seem to have provided proof or links. Minermatt122514 to the rescue, see below, MSNBC did indeed use it. Shame on them.
Is this sufficient to consider the AI portrait (not the 1:1 crop) as being "educational"? Technically, I guess you could argue that, but this file can also do harm. And it'll probably do more of the latter than the former. If this is kept, it would be a good idea to superimpose the text "AI-upscaled image, not an accurate depiction" in a large font on the image to make the image virtually useless beyond AI commentary. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:44, 28 January 2026 (UTC)- Alexis, I don't actually disagree with you or Kevin. Ideally, we should not be hosting AI upscaled versions of photographs of people because of the issues that AI poses, including as you say, introducing text that was not present in the original and distorting the likeness of Pretti. I will note that I did also support the proposal to ban generative AI images of living and recently deceased people except for when the depicted person or their representatives want it due to the moral rights of the depicted. So I personally do
Delete on this image. As I explain below, I did not undelete out of my personal views, in fact I acted opposite my beliefs because I felt the community needed more time to show what the consensus on this image is. I don't disagree with the close, only the timing of it. I was going to avoid discussing my opinion so I wouldn't unduly influence the outcome, but since you essentially asked me for my opinion, I will give it as well as further explaining that the potential newsworthiness of the image that the uploader did not create (VA photograph that was upscaled by AI) made G7 seem hasty. Speedy deletion is after all, for open and shut cases and by the UDR, this was clearly not an open and shut case. Abzeronow (talk) 03:53, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

Delete An AI-upscaled image ultimately does not represent reality and I believe falls out-of-scope as non-educational. We're doing a diservice by hosting and helping spread an image with generated details (like the nonsense text on the shirt). ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 02:23, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

I undeleted because the deletion was contentious enough that Trade and Josve05a wanted it to be undeleted, and because I found their arguments that the community hadn't been given enough time on the subject to show that there was consensus to delete. Notice that I did not remove the DR when I restored, please understand that my action was merely functionary in allowing more time for discussion so that consensus could be shown to remove or keep. My action was also contrary to my own personal beliefs on AI, I made a decision to give the community more of a chance to have their voice heard. Abzeronow (talk) 03:53, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- Abzeronow,
but please don't construe my action as a vote.
I'm sorry if it looked that way. I said you "supported undeletion" (which you did) and that you "seemingly supported Josve05a's suggestion of news sources mentioning circulation of modified images" which seems fair as you mentioned acting quicker than usual due to "potential newsworthiness" when Josve05a had just argued the file "may have some newsworthiness". My apologies if I misinterpreted your use of the same word as a reference to Josve05a's comment and/or misinterpreted it as tentative support for Josve05a's argument.
To me, it seemed you were on the fence and waiting for more details about the potential newsworthiness to make up your mind. If I had realized I wouldn't have wasted time trying to find coverage about this image. Having to watch Megyn Kelly is not fun.

Now a file that should've been immediately deleted as an AI-manipulated image of a real person that presented itself as faithful has become noteworthy thanks to our failure.
