    WRT File:Soyjak.party home page as of January 16th 2026 (cropped).png I wonder whether consideration of Feist v Rural isn't relevant. I think that among the things it says are (1) lists of facts are not normally protected by copyright; because (2) to be protected by copyright there has to be a spark of creativity. It seems to me that this image is mainly a directory listing, of the times and titles of files on the site. Ie, it is a list of facts.

    The WMF is cash-rich, as non-profits go. It has called upon lawyers who specialize in Intellectual property rights before. I suggest this interpretation of TOO question is one that should trigger actual lawyers who specialize in Intellectual property rights to offer us an explanation we can use in analyzing TOO instances. Hello, the user Deetailz removed the deletion tag on the page. This is the same behaviour that account displayed on wikipedia on the now deleted and salted "ichafu" page and vandalising other unrelated actual articles and not following rules. I have been looking into to copyright issue of the portrait photo. Using reverse lookups on multiple search engines (Google, Bing, Yandex, TinEye etc.) the only hit I can find is:

I sent an email (To: Rights | Brill.com <brill-rights@degruyterbrill.com) to the publisher (Degruyter-Brill.com) explaining what I wanted to use the photo for (an en. wikipedia article), and got a response from their office of "Rights and Permissions":
"Thank you for writing. We would not object to your use of the photograph, as long as you clear permission with any potential copyright holders.)
On their website, looking up the copyright information for this publication, I find:

Is this sufficient (and I wouldn't know what else to do) - how do I change the copyright classification I mistakenly attached to the photo?

@Jeff G. and Cbumb: returning to the original photo under discussion, I read Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States and found Anything published in or after 1978 but before March 1, 1989 with no copyright notice is in the public domain unless the work's copyright was registered within 5 years of the work's initial publication. According to the message from the archive quoted by Cbumb (and Google translate) Auf der Rückseite des Fotos steht ein Stempel: [On the back of the photo is a stamp:] "Press Briefing by Victor Umbricht, coordinator of international assistance for the reconstruction of Viet Nam, United Nations, New York, 21.3.1978", ein Fotograf oder eine Fotografin ist nicht angegeben. Hi Jeff,
I have uploaded a new portrait photo, for which I have received permission from the rights department of the publisher (Brill.com) to use for this article.: "You may freely reuse the alternative photograph, as long as you accompany it with a citation referring to the original publication with full bibliographical details."
I found the alternative photograph in my late father's book, "Multilateral mediation. Practical Experiences and Lessons. Dordrecht, Boston 1989, ISBN 90-247-3779-6”, which was published by Martinus Nijhoff in 1989. The photo in question is on p. 258 (Epilogue).
I hope this works for you - can you replace the currently posted picture on the Wikipedia Draft:Victor Hermann Umbricht with the one I uploaded to my Wikimedia uploads page, or give me instructions on how to do that?

Cbumb I have added a link to the new image to your comment, do you know who took the photo? The book is available via Brill in the Wikipedia Library and the Acknowledgements mention Mr. Wolfgang Schürer, Switzerland, whose friendly cooperation has enabled photographs to be included in the book. I do not know who took the photograph, but I doubt it was Prof. Schürer, since he is an academic economist at the University of St.Gallen. He was likely involved in finding and selecting photographs for the Book (which was published after my father died).
But I would hope that with the written permission from the Brill rights office, as indicated above, it would be ok to use for the wiki comment/article.
How do I add the source citation to the photo insert?

In contrast, the first one has the Brill permission, but they told me I also needed permission from The Hague Academy, which is still pending.

Keep — the evidence below points in the opposite direction from what is claimed.
1. The uploader published three othe photographs of BlueROV2 at full original resolution (4000–5470 px on the long side) with complete, unaltered EXIF metadata intact. Access to original RAW or high-resolution source files with embedded EXIF data is something only the actual author of the photographs would realistically possess.
2. A close comparison of the Commons file and the image on the manufacturer's website reveals that the website version is a cropped, reduced in size and post-processed derivative of the Commons original — not the other way around. Most notably, a plug-in device clearly visible in the original Commons photograph (left to the camera) has been retouched out in the version published on bluerobotics.com. This would make no sense if the manufacturer's image were the source.
Should any further confirmation be required, we can ask the copyright holder to submit a formal permission email to the Volunteer Response Team (VRT) in accordance with the standard OTRS process.  Comment File:Frank-Fasi-shaka-campaign-image.jpg might fall under public domain if it was published without a valid copyright notice (PD-US-no notice), since it was published before 1972.
File:Hawaii Shaka Gesture Law Signing 2024.jpg and File:Shaka-License-Plates.jpg come from this page, where they are listed as "free use", but the website footer still says "© 2026 ID8". The linked page for more free use images (here) says "Credit “Courtesy ID8”", but still no explicit license (nor is there one in the Dropbox link on that page). It might be possible to ask the copyright holder(s) if they'd be willing to publish them with a clear CC license so they can be used on Commons.

Ich kann das nicht so stehenlassen. Das Gebäude rechts hat eine "1" mit einem "...platz". Das Logo rechts zeigt eine "Katja", die Podologin ist. Das Gebäude rechts ist Marktplatz 1, wie man hier sehen kann. So haben wir. Hier stehen wir zwischen Standort und Fotomotiv. So vermute ich, dass es die Hersbrucker Straße 5 ist, damit wäre die Angabe tatsächlich falsch, aber das Gebäude zumindest identifiziert :). --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 19:28, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

Ignoring this part, I want to highly clarify why this one should be deleted. This was released in 1989 according to a reliable source on Rocko's Modern Life's Wikipedia article, not 1988. As the exact date is unknown, it's still likely its automatically copyrighted as all works released 3/1/1989 and later are that way. Something went wrong here. There are two unrelated images in the file history. The first is totally a copyvio from a 1-edit account. The second and current is valid for Wikimedia Commons. Can someone delete just the older pic? This file is used in multiple places.  Comment Bonjour, cela a en effet été corrigé, ceci après vérification des références fournies en premier lieu, qui ont révélé un intitulé incorrect, puisqu'il ne s'agit pas des armes des « Wattecamps », mais plutôt de celles de la famille alliée « Marquette », comme le laissent entendre les références AGF XII p. 778 (v. n°2 « Jeanne Wattecamps veuve de François Marquette ») et Armorial de Tournai et du Tournaisis p. 160 (v. n°2 « Marquette »), celui-ci donnant toutefois des armes légèrement différentes (le chevron chargé en pointe « d'un croissant » et non d'une croisette, les couleurs quant à elles n'étant pas spécifiées) mais suffisamment proches pour corroborer le fait que l'intitulé original du fichier était fautif.
Ceci étant, en l'état le blason est valide et pourrait tout aussi bien être conservé, bien que la probabilité de son utilisation effective sur un des projets reste pour l'instant purement hypothétique. --Kontributor 2K (talk) 10:50, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
