Согласно исландским легендам, примерно в 1000 году н. э., Лейф Эриксон с командой из 35 человек отплыл на запад на своём драккаре. Ими были открыты три региона американского побережья. Там же были основаны и несколько временных поселений. По данным некоторых историков, они в скором времени были оставлены по причине конфликтов с аборигенами.

Каждый год 9 октября в США проводится День Эйрикссона.
