Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

modification of monoecious_dioecious_en.svg
Hi, I'm about to edit Plant Reproductive Morphology and I need to rejig your image to use the term 'homoecious' instead of 'plant with hermaphrodite flowers' (which is what homoecious means). I've done the change with my limited tools/skill and it looks mostly OK - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homoecy_Monoecy_Dioecy_en.png - but I can't get the font exactly the same, close, but not the same. I used DejaVu Sans Lite Bold, but it isn't quite thick enough. I'm ready to use what I've done, but if you are interested, could you relabel it with homoecious in a new image so the font matches? Also, I couldn't get it in SVG... If not, I don't think it's a big deal. Thanks, and thank you for doing these images for wikimedia. Pcrooker (talk) 02:51, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Floral diagrams and building upon your work
Hi! Man https://gigazine.net/gsc_news/en/20240929-floral-diagram-generator looks so cool!
The website seems to be off, though, I could not find your thesis. I would love to read it!
I come from the data (linked data / Wikidata side) and am considering doing somethin with floral formulae / floral diagrams as part of a post-doc.
The idea would be to try and build a data standard for floral diagrams — ideally connected to a renderer like yours. All using open standards / free software.
I am not sure if the source code for your website is public / open, though. Would you have thoughts on people building upon your work (with due credit, of course?)
Great to see you on Wiki, and very beautiful diagrams around here. Cheers! TiagoLubiana (talk) 18:33, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hello. Thanks. If the website is off for you, it might be due to the fact that the (free) hosting provider is currently proceeding with some server migrations. Or perhaps there is some country blocking, is there any way you could use Czech VPN/Proxy? The original code is very messy, but I could send it to you for inspiration. However, there are many information in the diagrams that are difficult to fit into the formulae. If you want to discuss it further, please contact me at tomaskeb@gmail.com. --Nefronus 18:54, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the quick reply! I will send you an e-mail. TiagoLubiana (talk) 19:02, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
