Current support

Commons currently enables upload of spatial media (other than geospatial data in tabular or map form) in a single media type, .stl (see Commons:Project scope/Allowable file types); a growing category tree is developing for those files already uploaded, and at least one bot is doing imports. However, as the STL format was originally designed for computer-aided manufacturing (specifically, stereolithographic processes), the files are untextured and therefore cannot display colours or other modern material-rendering capabilities. Supporting other formats has been proposed.

Things to do:

  • model orientation (which direction is up, forward)
  • file size
  • performance
  • materials, textures, lighting, and appearance

Freedom of panorama

Note that because a 3D model has the potential to represent a 3D object with fidelity, 'freedom of panorama' concerns may or may not apply depending on jurisdiction. For more on this, see COM:UA.
