COM:PACKAGE Solomon203 (talk) 06:10, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

How does this work out under Canadian law? Are the logos (and the product names, such as they aren't on the store brand) copyrightable (they would not be under US law, not the ones shown)? And assuming they are, does de minimis apply where two sets of copyrighted logos/designs are shown? Daniel Case (talk) 06:15, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
The logos can be copyrightable, but simple logos are not. All the logos in these packages are simple and not protected with copyright. But rest of the packages is complex. De minimis clearly does not apply, because the packages are main objects of the photo. Taivo (talk) 18:17, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
This is correct under US law, because it is established through case law that images consisting of simple text such as a company name and/or slogan in a common typeface and/or simple geometric shapes do not meet the threshold of originality for copyright.

But, per Commons policy, the images need to be free in both the US (since that's where they're hosted) and the country of origin. I took this in Canada, therefore we need to be satisfied that Canadian copyright law also doesn't recognize these as copyrightable.

All that seems to be out there is that Canada recognizes "artistic elements" in an image. Whether that would include the specifics mentioned above in US law, I would like to think it doesn't, but I am not sure. If someone who can get specific, citeable information on this can join in, I'd be interested.

As for the rest of the packages, I assume you mean the informational text. That could be copyrightable, but ... would notice on the packaging itself be required? (They also don't seem to be complete sentences in either English or French, which usually weighs against copyrightability). Daniel Case (talk) 20:09, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

There is no freedom of panorama in Russia for sculpture and probably the photos violate sculptor's copyright. This is 1975 statue and protected with copyright in USA until 2071 (95+1 years from creation) – in Russia maybe more, depends on when the sculptor Yu. N. Ovchinnikov died. Taivo (talk) 10:36, 18 January 2026 (UTC)

I wonder if there's a typo in the name of the sculptor: could it be that his name is Yu.A. Ovchinnikov? Russian N and A can somewhat resemble each other if the print or handwriting is a bit messy. I can't find anything on a sculptor with the initials Yu.N., but there's a sculptor with the initials Yu.A. who would fit the time and location since he was working in Omsk since 1957, and also died in Omsk in 2000. In that case the sculptor's full name would be Yury Alekseevich Ovchinnikov (1929–2000).
There's also no Yu.N.Ovchinnikov listed on the website of the Artist's Union, while Yu.A. Ovchinnikov is there. Nakonana (talk) 21:34, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

Delete. COM:TOO France says, that threshold of originality in France is quite low. That case the logo is copyrightable. But this is close call, so another opinion is needed as well. Taivo (talk) 11:38, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

In 2024 the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation decided:
"To recognize paragraph 1 of Article 1276 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation as not contradicting the Constitution of the Russian Federation to the extent that, according to its constitutional and legal meaning, in the system of current legal regulation, when images of works of fine art are placed in the information and reference material on cultural, historical and other attractions of the territory (guidebook). - a sculpture that is located in an open place on this territory or is visible from such a place does not require the consent of the author or other copyright holder of the sculpture and payment of remuneration to him, including if the relevant information and reference material is distributed for profit, and in this image the sculpture can be considered as the main object of use."
So it's not forbidden in Russia to make photos of sculptures and use them in information and reference materials. I'm sure that Wikipedia is the information and reference source.

Also  Keep File:Дворец пионеров (Челябинск) f012.jpg as De Minimis because it's not possible to photograph the Pioneer Palace building without including the sculpture. That's like the pyramid in front of the Louvre example in COM:DM France. Nakonana (talk) 20:13, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

Being issued by the government of Ukraine or the SBU does not automatically make an image PD. Images from the SBU's website are published under the Creative Commons license; that's where the photo I uploaded comes from. Hence your point about me having "uploaded a similar image attributed to the same Security Service of Ukraine" is irrelevant. On the contrary, the photo nominated here does not come from the SBU's website, so the Creative Commons license does not apply to it. And as I wrote in my nomination rationale, this photo does not fit in any of the unprotected categories you linked to. BilletsMauves (talk) 18:55, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
