Князья Борис и Глеб – младшие сыновья Великого киевского князя Владимира. Вскоре после смерти отца в 1015 году они были жестоко убиты старшим братом Святополком, устранявшим соперников в борьбе за киевский престол. В «Чтении о житии и погублении… Бориса и Глеба» Нестора (70–80-е годы XI века) содержится рассказ о том, как заключенные в темницу узники призывали этих князей на помощь и они им являлись на конях. Данный памятник самый ранний из сохранившихся икон этого иконографического извода. Икона «Борис и Глеб на конях» – одна из первых, раскрытых в начале столетия. Памятник получил сразу же широкую известность. Икона была предметом длительной научной полемики – долгое время ее относили к кругу московских памятников, в пользу этого говорило ее происхождение из Успенского собора Московского Кремля. Но стилистические особенности иконы заставляли ученых видеть в ней псковскую живопись раннего времени, это мнение и устоялось в искусствоведческой науке последних лет. Подтверждением этому служат и летописные источники, сообщающие об участии псковских мастеров (каменщиков и иконописцев) в строительстве и украшении храмов Московского Кремля.
