File:Ellipse drawn using loop of string.jpg

Summary

Description
English: For some reason, the common method of drawing an ellipse is to tie a string to two pegs and slide the marker along the taut string. This only is convenient for drawing half the ellipse, and requires one to readjust for the other half. Drawing the next ellipse then requires re-knotting the string. Far better is to pass a closed loop over the pegs. Only one knot is required, and only one pass over the cord, and the same loop will do, no matter how many ellipses of the same size are needed. Given the focal points of the ellipse, the loop must reach from one focal point to the far point of the ellipse.
