Semailname (Şemâilnâme, “Book of Characteristics”, "Human Physiognomy Concerning the Personal Dispositions of the Ottomans") (TSMK H.1563), created in 1579 or 1584.p.49 Created by the Ottoman court historian Seyyid Lokman Ashuri (Sayyid Loqman ibn Ḥuseyn al-Ashuri), who was an official şehnameci (imperial historiographer) in the late 16th century. Lokman composed the text describing the characteristics of the Ottoman sultans up to his present era as part of a project commissioned by the Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. The miniatures in the manuscript — including portraits of the early Ottoman sultans — were painted by Nakkaş Osman, the chief court miniaturist of the period. His workshop executed the artistic program under Lokman’s direction.
