Photo of John R. Park, a prominent educator in the Territory and State of Utah in the late 19th century, and in many ways was the intellectual father of the University of Utah.
Hello, I'm contacting you because it looks like you are the one that contributed the photo of John R Park, the first photo that is showing, titled "Park in approximately 1896." I have gathered evidence to show that it is most likely that of James Chipman 1839-1922, who was the first elected State Treasurer of the State of Utah, rather than John R Park, first elected School Superintendant. I have contacted the copyright/status owner of this photo, the Church History Collections, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Intellectual Reserves, Inc. as well as the BYU Library Digital Collections and given them evidence that this photo is most likely that of James Chipman. The Church History Library has changed their summary of the photograph to read, "Group portrait of seven men, including Governor Wells sitting in prominent position. Two others tentatively identified as James Chipman and James T. Hammond." The photograph itself is not viewable on the website at this time, but this is the link to the catalog entry: https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/record/759f2112-5959-4de0-b0b2-6011fc5b73f3/0?view=summary&lang=eng
You will see that the BYU Library Digital Collections has also updated their description of the photo: https://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/digital/collection/Savage2/id/1192
The following is a copy of the email that I sent to both BYU and the Church History Library:
This is in regard to the photograph in your collection entitled "Utah Governor Heber M. Wells and state leaders, circa 1896" it is showing in the description, "Two other tentatively identified as John R. Park and James T. Hammond." I believe John R. Park is incorrectly identified as the man standing on the left. I've come to the conclusion that it is actually James Chipman, first state treasurer elected in 1895. The following are links to other photographs for comparison of the two men.

James Chipman and John R. Park in "Beehive History, Volume 21, 1995 Published on Aug 30, 2018, page 17 This is an important article, as it shows photographs of both James Chipman and John R. Park among the first elected state officials. You can see that the brow lines of the two men are very different, John R. Park having a dark heavy brow, and James Chipman having a much lighter brow, though both are sporting a mustache. https://issuu.com/utah10/docs/beehivehistory21

The photograph, "Utah Governor Heber M. Wells and state leaders, circa 1896" in your collection is being used on other websites to identify John R. Park, even though it is only a tentative identification. I have found the photograph in Digital Collections of the BYU Library, using the same description as the Church History Library. Found here: https://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/digital/collection/Savage2/id/1192 It is also being used on Wikipedia, found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_R._Park
The descendants of James Chipman would be thrilled, I'm sure, to have this photograph correctly identified as their ancestor. John R. Park has no blood descendants, but I'm a descendant of his adopted daughter Hortense Held. It is important to me to make an accurate record of my adopted great great grandfather.
End of copy
I'm hoping that you will be willing to remove the photo of James Chipman, as this is not a correct representation of John R Park. ~2026-20824-30 (talk) 18:29, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
